Once again Michael Lewis does a magnificent job writing articles for the MLS website. We all remember what a special player Giovanni Savarese was for Metro. I believe he was a diamond in the rough who was always mis-understood by the past coaches with the exception of Alfonso Mondelo & Carlos Alberto Parreria who showed that they knew Gio can score.

I also agree that some of us who want to see the pretty goals didn't like Gio that much because he would put in the "Garbage Goals" But I didn't care if they were pretty or ugly. The entire ball crosses the line, the ball hits the back of the net. It's a goal plain and simple.

And now the question portion of this thread. He is 34 years old, he tried out for Long Island Rough Riders and sadly it didn't work out, not because of fitness problems, but because of his time as director of youth sides for Metro. But here is what my question is to all of you. Do you think he could come back as a member of Metro not as a starter, but as a supersub. Return the #17 Shirt to Gio and maybe, just maybe the magic will come back from the first three seasons we remember of what he did. He can help out the younger players as well. Not Just Amado, or Youri helping the younger guys, but maybe Gio can add a thing or two. There are still a certain ammount of reserve matches remaining. Maybe if Gio is given a chance there can be some more Gio Goals adding to the good.

He was in camp before the 04 season and wasn't up to the level IIRC.....I think thats where they got those pictures of him in last years uni's from....

So he has had a chance recently and the magic did not return....

Savrese was very good when MLS was new, but the competition has improved a lot. It is interesting that he played well at Swansea, in Division 3, but couldn't make it at Millwall.

The roster spot had to be kept for certain coach's kids.

Gio could still get the job done.

He didnt exactly set the stats sheet on fire last year when he played for the Rough Riders, so no, he can't get the job done.

    Werd.

He may not play like he did back in 1996, but hey, aside from Razov who's been a consistant scorer this year? Uh, no one?
