Interesting selection, based on his criteria. I have to admit I like his reasoning for the #1 goal, though. 3 out of 10 are from the U.S. www.onthesidelines.blogspot.com
My two cents The goal in the England-Brazil game is erroneously credited to Ronaldo. Rivaldo scored that one, though Ronaldinho correctly gets the credit for doing all the work. Also, it was Robert Carlos who assisted on Zidane's goal in the Champions' League final. No, that adds up to 4 cents all together...
Thanks for the correction! I was strictly working from memory and blanked out once or twice...aren't you glad I didn't even attempt to put the dates with the goals? Bushman
That's the first I've seen of this site, it looks great. Nice article. But...there was this one goal by this guy Clint Mathis in the World Cup. I bet it's on your 'My Way' video. You should check it out.
As I stated at the beginning of the column, I was pretty strict w/ my criteria. I had to see the goal live on tv or from the stands if I was in attendance. I totally agree that Mathis' goal was incredible, and had I seen it live it would have made the list. Unfortunately, I missed the first part of the game and had to see the replays. I've gotten several emails about omitting the goal. Hopefully this will clear things up. Mark Bushman www.onthesidelines.blogspot.com
“Holy S*it! We’re bitch-slapping Portugal!” – Poster on Big Soccer after the U.S. scored its 3rd goal in the first 25 minutes to go up 3-0 on the heavily-favored Portuguese. That came from the same page as the goals a little bit further down. Wonder who said that...
My choice for #1 goal this year was not a World Cup goal, but Beasley vs. South Korea in the Gold Cup. IIRC, Beasley had come on as a sub, and deep into second half stoppage time he ran onto a perfect chipped pass from Cunningham and volleyed it in off the crossbar from the edge of the box to win the match. The Korean keeper didn't even move until the ball was already past him. I was in Sam's Army for this one, and the moment the ball hit the net I heard the guy right behind me shout "He's in the team!!! He's in the team!!!" That was the moment I was sure Beasley would go to Korea. As the celebration died down I remembered that it was Donovan who had scored the first goal, and started to believe that something big was going to happen this summer.
Good choice, Elninho! Beasley's goal against SK was incredible! I liked his goal against Uruguay, but for pure shot accuracy and power, his game-winner in the Gold Cup is what did it for me.
Wasn't it Cobi (throw-in)-Cunningham-Donovan-Beasley? I don't have my computer here so I can't verify, but that goal was awesome.
Actually, he was, just not in the order I remembered. Cobi throws the ball in running up the right hand sideline to Donovan who chips it left to Cunningham. You know the rest.
[QUOTECobi throws the ball in running up the right hand sideline to Donovan who chips it left to Cunningham. You know the rest. [/B][/QUOTE] This is how I remembered it too. Definitely one of my favorite goals of 2002! I was watching the game on PPV while feeding my 9 month old son. When Beasley struck that ball I screamed "GOAL!" so loud that my son started bawling and my dog went nuts barking.
