I have always been a Mathis fan, mostly for his passion on the field and what I feel he is capable of. He is one of those players who you want to watch just hoping that you may see somethinge very special, something that few players are capable of producing.

That being said I've been disappointed with him for quite some time at his seemingly lackluster play.

Here's hoping that his recent form is a sign that Cletus is getting back on track for himself. IMHO, I would LOVE to see him back with the Nats sometime soon.

To clarify, I want to see him back with the Nats IF he earns it. Not simply based on what he's shown recently. That is just a start as far as I'm concerned.

I think that goal should be the of the week. It's not that easy to keep the ball low from 40 yard all the way to the net with plenty of power(not many players can do that).
After watching the US in the gold cup, i think Clint should be back with the national team !

    When somebody says:

"IMHO" I always think to myself:

Aren't you already giving your honest opinion? Just a thought...

I thought "IMHO" means "in my HUMBLE opinion." As opposed to representing something as hard-and-fast fact.

Maybe your right about Humble being what the H stands for, but I still think it's funny when somebody reiterates the fact that they are giving their own opinion, when they already were......you see?!

    Okay, off topic.

    GO CLINT!

Can I ask how close is mathis to being in his old Metrostars self again. I enjoy and admire his style of play and is one of the few players that can actually shoot from outside the box (note: look at Hejduk for how NOT to shoot). I havent had a chance to see him play. By the way you guys have a great team as far as individual talent goes. Once this team gells it's gonna be scary.

Mathis has played better the last few games. In fact, I think of his break out games was the Chivas USA blowout a few weeks ago.
I think he really needed to get into form first.

BTW With all the injuries from the Gold Cup, I wonder if Mathis doesn't get called up?

That would be RSL's luck. Just when a guy starts contributing to his team, he get's called away for National duty. (i.e. Andy Williams)

I was thinking the same thing. Like it's not been tough enough for RSL. I'd like to see Clint back with the Nats, but not at RSL's expense. I think he's needed more right now with RSL.

I don't see Clint getting called up by the nats. He really hasn't shown enough to warrant it yet. If he continues to impact the games it may come.

    Mark my words:

He will be one of the biggest impacting players on RSL for the rest of the season. Hands down.

My question is has Mathis been active, involved, hard-working, but just hard-luck as far as goals until now? The times I've been able to catch RSL it's seemed he's worked harder on defense and finding space than I remember in quite a while. If there's one guy who's revival would help the USA and MLS it's Clintinho. I pray he stays healthy and continues his recent scoring ways.

more good news for mathis lovers, he was selected for goal of the week, AGAIN. 2 times in 3 weeks. awesome job clint. oh ya and this is the 3rd GOTW honors for RSL in the last 5 weeks. pretty crazy considering about a month ago we all worried when the scoring drought would actually stop.

awesome job rsl and mathis, hope you keep it up.

I think it's kinda funny how Mathis' only two goals have both won Goal of the Week.

I don't think it's funny at all. He has a cannon for a right leg.

I was looking at stats for RSL players and noticed something interesting. The leading goal scorer is Jason Kreis with 6 goals. In 2nd place it's a tie between Cila, Dunseth, Mathis, and Trembly with 2 goals each. When I look at assists I notice that the assist leader is Mathis with 4. The next closest in assists is a tie between Kreis and Williams with 2 assists each. I don't think we can point a finger at Mathis and say that he's the root of our scoring problem. I think we need to look at the team as a whole. If you're going to get on Clint's case for only scoring 2 goals why aren't you getting on other players like Dante Washington, Tiger Fitzpatrick, Seth Trembly, Jaime Watson, etc? What do you want from these guys? I look at the L.A. Galaxy and Landon Donovan leads his team with 6 goals and there are four other players with 4 goals. Then I look at San Jose and two of their players have 5 goals and some others have 4 goals.

Realistically, how many goals should Mathis have right now? You seem to be able to point out his faults very easily but when it comes down to comparing Mathis with other players in MLS he compares rather well. I'd hate to see what RSL would look like without Mathis.

Your point is a good one, but two things to put it in perspective:

    1) Clint is paid almost double of all the RSL guys you listed combined.

    2) His scoring production prior to the last 2-3 games (where he earned a lot of those points) was non-existent... so many comments about Clint come mostly from that...

Personally, I've liked a lot of things Clint has done the last 4-5 games BEYOND things that got results - he's laid up some awesome passes and through balls that guys didn't finish. He's moved things well and started playing defense. If he plays the rest of the season the way he has the last few games, I'll think he was well worth it.

This is spot on. I've never been upset about his lack of scoring, it was some lame passing and/or getting beat to the ball by a more ambitious mid-fielder that was irking me. Lately it seems his passing is much improved, perhaps that's what happens when a team begins to gel.

I watched the Mathis interview during today's half. I think that Clint isn't being honest to himself. He said that conditioning is the main factor keeping him off the MNT. I think it is attitude. He is a good tallent, and his conditioning needs improvment. The problem is, tallent does nothing when it is in the lockerroom. Clint loose his cool too often, plus there have been too many games this season when Mathis just didn't seem to care. The MNT can't accept those issues when there is so much more tallent available.

Does anyone else have a read on the interview?
