Agreed. We would probably lose if it came to a bidding war but I wouldn't mind Wenger at least trying.

Could it be that Wenger does not have as much money to spend like we all think? Essien....NO CHANCE. The Baptista move seems to have fallen thru.
    Not good times.

Ouch. Dude, that's more than a bit offensive, don't you think? Calm down.

I think Wenger has money. He's was willing to drop 10M GBP on Hleb and 8M GBP on Baptista (and 14M on Robinho) before we sold Vieira. Those aren't the moves of someone tight on cash. I was honestly surprised that we didn't try harder for SWP, but then again, that's Wenger. He's got his valuation of each player, and if the number gets too high, he walks.

Unless you assume the Robinho bid was just a way to jerk RM around, AW has at least 14M GBP in hand right now (6M from the first payment on Vieira, plus 8M leftover from the Robinho bid as the rest went to our increased bid for Baptista). That's a nice chunk of change, and I think he can get more to boot for the right player.

How do you figure he wouldn't cost any more than £20 mill?

One guy I'm sorta dissapointed we haven't been linked to is Rosicky. I know he wouldn't add a thing defensively, but how scary would we be attacking?

firstly he's desperate to leave lyon and the club wouldn't hold the player against his will. secondly he isn't worth anything over £20 million and even the club knows this, the only reason the price is so high is because chelsea are involved. and lastly wenger is one of the most respected people in french football, he's probably close friends with the lyon chairman and houllier. it's only my opinion and it doesn't mean much but i think wengers just waiting for chelsea to snub him before making his move.

So why are Lyon rejecting bids of £20M?

He only sounds desperate to leave Lyon for Chelski.

Aulas already said he won't sell for less than Gerrard's fee, and he hasn't wavered at all, so I don't see why you would expect he would suddenly be ready to accept something around £20 mill.

the guy wants to move to a big club, at the moment chelsea are the only ones bidding for him. lyon won't keep him against his will but if they do it depends on how long he has left on his current contract.

apparently wenger is his favourite manager and when the time comes for him to move and both clubs are bidding for his sig, i'd be surprised if he chose chelsea over us.

Even if Arsenal could somehow afford the £32million asking price, Chelski would probably put in a bigger bid the day after Arsenal's is submitted, and offer him a way bigger contract. They're only taking their time sealing the deal because there's no pressure from other bidders. Submitting a bid would kinda be like fast forwarding a DVD. Same outcome, just a little quicker.

end of the day it depends on what club the player wants to goto. if chelsea bid £30mill and arsenal bid £18, and he wanted to play for arsenal, lyon would have to accept our offer and if they didn't they risk losing the player for alot less/free when his contract is almost up.

ya.. except that he doesnt care to come to the arsenal and has repeatedly stated he wants to play for chelsea.. moot point.

essien is overrated anyways.. let chelsea 'ave him.

I'm not going to look for the quote now (gotta go do laundry), but I remember Aulas basically saying he's willing to do just that. Nobody will buy Essien for much less than £32 million this summer.

my post was hypothetical but anyway we don't know that.

arsene wenger is his favourite coach, why wouldn't he want to play for arsenal?

well they don't want to sell the player and it's upto them but no one is going to pay that much for essien, and the club risk losing him on the cheap.

Forget Essien. He wants to play for the Blues. An Arsenal player who stated that he wants to play for Chelsea wouldn't be an Arsenal player in my mind.
