Trying to compile a list of all the guys that fall under this(these) positions, such as: Makelele Vieira Keane Gattuso Hamann Van bommel? Parker Diarra Diop Galásek Costinha Albeda Thats all I got though, others?
baraja, maniche, gravesen, essien, vogel, cocu, torrado, etc. etc. and yes, van bommel is most certainly a ballwinner
some additions then of maybe the better players at the position who havent been mentioned.... What about Essien? Granted I have only seen Lyon maybe 5-6 times this year, but it looked like Diarra was the Holder and Essien and Juninho pushed forward.
I always saw him as a deep lying playmaker. You really think he could be a good enough DMid without Gattuso doing the gritty work?
Pirlo is not a defensive midfielder. He is a creative midfielder who plays deeper in midfield. Today Rui Costa played in Pirlo's role and I don't think anyone would classify him as a defensive midfielder.
Well where Pirlo plays on the field is classified as a defensive midfield role, but I guess Gattuso does the tackling for him.

Hey What Emerson is this? The Juve one? i thought he was a right winger? and isn't Ballack an attacker?
A Spurs AND Chelsea fan? I wonder how that's working out for you... Emerson is a holding midfielder (Camoranesi is Juve's right winger), while Ballack is a box-to-box midfielder, but tends to go forward a bit more than defend.
Young Argentine midfielder, plays for Boca, was part of the U-20 team (#17, I believe) that won the WYC this year.
