I'd expect more to be leaked soon.
Just curious. How do they work around the salary cap when one player is making 900,000? And what happened to the old 'max salary'? I'm not looking for peoples theories, I'm wondering if somebody actually knows something. Thanks.
From what I understand (given other comments on this topic both here and on MLSNet), they work around it with a nudge and a wink and a gentleman's agreement roughly akin to "Yah, he makes 900k, but only 350k counts against the salary cap" Nobody actually knows anything about how this works, IMO, even the people who are supposed to.
That's my understanding as well. But then shouldn't the base be 350K but the Overall be whatever it is. (like in Adu or Wolfs case). It seems strange that someon can have a 'base' salary that high.
the current max counts against the cap (280k?)... anything over that doesn't do anything to our team salary cap number
So, in reality, not so much a "cap" as a "not fvcking anything like a cap" Most overpaid on that list (IMHO) in terms of actual talent contribution to their squad... Freddy Adu D.C. 300,000 550,000 Ramon Ramirez Chivas USA 425,000 500,000 Eddie Pope Salt Lake City 314,782 378,948 Jovan Kirovski Los Angeles 175,000 290,000 Freddy at least brings box-office. Eddy Pope was worth that money once upon a time. The other two are inexplicable.
people have been overpaid in terms of max salary since the inception of mls my question is whether or not the bonus also effects the cap... as when i see armas and sanneh... they are below the max, but with their bonuses... they are above the cap... so does only their base count or are they effecting as at max because of their bonuses??? i believe the bonuses count against the cap... but i always forget and can never remember anything specific on it
Well, if you're going to use that argument, I must contend that Ramon was also worth that much once apon a time. RSL renegotiated Pope's contract when he went to Utah, so there's really no excuse for them either.
Brought - past tense. The DC United road attendance this year is only better than two other teams. That is, there are nine teams who draw better on the road than DC United this year. Did you not notice the abysmal attendance at SF when DC visited last month? It only exceeded the season low by 88 people. The "Freddy bump" is no longer with us.
I agree. The guy doesn't put a sinlgle butt in a seat. UNLESS--The league paid that as an investment. In other words, they figured if they paid him a high salary they could hold onto him awhile longer they would make it all back as his transfer fee increased. If that is the case, someone in management was very savvy (thus, I doubt that's the case).
Whats ridiculous is Tony Sanneh is in the Top 10 in the league. He hardly deserves Top 10 on the Fire. Here's a fabulous endorsment from Ives Galarcep of Soccernet:
From what I've read and understand, it goes something like this: If you're paid $500,000, only the portion of that up to the salary cap number counts against the cap. So, if the cap is $385,000 and you make $500,000, $115,000 doesn't count against the team's cap. Yes, it's retarded. But it allows the league to attract great talent like Hernandez and Matteus while not putting some teams over the team cap limit with that one player.
Everything Garber (or some other MLS suit- I never really pay attention) has been saying recently has pointed to the fact that there is no longer a salary cap. There is more of a salary structure that teams work from, but aren't tightly bound. It's complete bullshit for teams like us, as we probably would have been able to acquire Hat-Ricky Van den Bergh last year, but hopefully we'll be able to take advantage of it in the future. He F'n wanted to come here!
I read on another forum from a guy that lives in Holland that his club didn't want to let him go join the Fire. But we're already doing great at forward so don't you think it would've been wasted $ just like Reiter is? I think it's kinda sad that we've gotta have Herron and Barrett warm the bench when they're such talented strikers.

I almost fell off my chair laughing when I saw this. In fact I am still laughing right now. Needless to say, he will get at least a livable wage next year.
I am really lazy...Where did you find the team breakdown and does anyone else agree that collection plates should be passed around during Fire games to support Segares and Rolfe?
Don't forget, Pickets got bumped up to the Senior team and Sega got a senior Dev spot. They should both be making more money than what those numbers say.
