Eddie, As a fellow Carolina grad, I have always followed your career with extra pride. DC United was all the greater for your membership and will never be the same without you. Best of Luck. Skippy, UNC '86
The Standard We're sorry to see you go, Eddie. You have always been class on and off the field. A quiet leader with skill, grace, and strength. The best American defender, ever. You set the standard for American defenders to follow. This is one of the dumbest trades I've ever seen in any sport. Good luck to you. We'll miss you.
I can't add anything more eloquent than what has already been said. So thanks and good luck in the future. We'll miss you.
Thanks Eddie Thanks for everything Eddie. Good luck for continued success and health with the national team. You'll have hold a spot in are hearts. However, when you come to town with the scum we'll hate you. Hope you realize that it's not personal. Again thanks for everything you've done for United and the city of Washington.
Goodbye, your Eminence. I'll keep your bobble head on my desk at work...I'll have to drape a black veil over it in mourning whenever you come back in Scum colours. If you get the opportunity to go to a European club (except Tottenham), please go and show the world what we already know in DC: that you rule the backline!
I promised myself I wouldn't do this...and now I'm all verklempt! Talk amongst yourselves...I'll give you two topics: The "New Deal" was neither new, nor a deal. Jack Daniels "Original Hard Cola" contains neither Jack Daniels, nor cola. Discuss! Okay, I'm back...Best of luck, Eddie (except against DC!) - we never could have asked for anything more from you, either on or off the field. I just looked up "class" in the dictionary and found your picture.
My 12 year old asked me "Why Eddie Pope?" Then he asked, "What happens to the Eddie Pope Foundation and the kids it supports?". That says it all. My son, whose seen a hundred or more DCU games at age 12 and who couldn't care less about Moreno and Williams, knew that Eddie is still a great player but an even greater man. Each year he's seen this at the Soccer Ball with Eddie grace and charity! The yiddish language has a word -- mensch -- that descibes him well. As we Irish say " Ah Eddie we hardly knew ye -- May the wind be always at your back and the road rise up to meet ye!
Thanks Eddie for your poise, intelligence and excellence on the back line. thanks for repesenting my favorite team with class and dignity. Thanks for being someone I could point to and tell other Blacks "Yes, there are brothers playing soccer and doing it quite well." Thanks for flying back and forth to get your degree during your rookie season. Thanks for being one of the most unsung foundations of MLS. You can wear Metros colors but you will always be Red & Black. DCU till I die...
I'm a Quakes and thus impartial but this to me seems like a totally stupid trade. I know there are salary cap and allocation issues but c'mon. MLS teams that have been successful have primarily built there teams around US players. Over the course of the league's history, Pope has been, on average, the best US player. I know he is injury prone but he is still in his prime and had a terrific World Cup. How many better central defenders are there on the planet than Pope? I look at euro players like Sol Campbell and I see little difference in quality and experience. Plus he's got 5-10 years left. I just wish the Quakes could have got him instead of NY.
The salary cap screwed you over, Eddie. You will forever be a United player in my mind! EDDIE COME BACK!
Thanks Eddie Thanks for being such a horse at the World Cup Thanks for all the years of service to your country Thanks for being our rock at the back Thanks for being such a class act Thanks Eddie.
I am deeply saddened to hear of Pope and Williams being traded. They made DC United. I wish the both of them the best of luck and hope that someday they will return to the real American team. Thank you for all the great games, tenacity, and world class you brought to the table day in and day out. But if either of you read this, make sure you pull an Agoos when DC plays NY. You know, a little appreciation put forth our way for all the support we have shown you two over the years. Thanks again and good luck! CHEERS!
All that needs to be said has been said. I am just one more voice who has enjoyed watching you play and knows DC United will be worse off with you gone. I will cheer against your team but will always be a fan. They can have my bobble-head when they pry it from my cold dead hands.
I think that's the perfect summation of Eddie's career at DCU. I was proud to be a fan and not because of anything he did on the pitch, even when he was as amazing on the field as he was. That's the mark of someone really special.
Tough week in DC as we lost Darrell Green and Eddie Pope. Here's hoping these two continue their outstanding work in the DC community. True class acts.
I'm looking around my apartment and I see pictures of me with Jaime, Eddie, Harkes, Goose, Garlick, Talley. If this trade turns out to be a bust, I'm making sure I get my picture taken with Ray and Kasper... Dave
I guess you never saw Casablanca. Was referring to the memory of Foxboro ie, "We will always have Paris. "
