I would dare say that Yankee Stadium will never ever be a soccer stadium. It is a shrine to baseball and will never host any other sport especially soccer.
Ok let me rephrase that....I doubt Yankee stadium will ever be converted to a stadium for any other sport but baseball. If the Yankees move out, it will probably be turned into a muesum or something.
If Big George ever gets his billion dollar mid town manhatten stadium you bet Steinbrenner will move the Yanks. Over the years he has had many not so kind words for both the Bronx and the stadium. I think the city owns Yankee Stadium and the land around it, I realize that Yankee stadium is a shrine, but if it were ever sitting around vacant, I'm confident that the city would entertain offers for its use, including converting it into a SSS. It would likely cause some controversy. Given that the Mets have been eyeing a new stadium, in conjunction with the NYC 2012, perhaps then, Shea stadium is a possibility.
Who'd want to play soccer in that hole? You might as well be United playing in rat-infested RFK. And I'm speaking as a lifelong Met fan too.
I think what he was saying is... "We'd love to find another knucklehead to give us $25 million to share a market with us and pay us rent to use our building."
Like Ebbets Field? This is New York. If it ain't generating income, it gets demolished and replaced with something that will.
New York Cosmos vs. New Jersey MetroStars (or would they simply remain as the MetroStars) would make for awesome derbies! San Jose Earthquakes vs. New York Cosmos battles would certainly bring back memories. -G
I think they're going to build a new/old Yankee stadium across the street from the current one and tear the current Yankee stadium down. The new Yankee stadium will be baseball-only. I think Hartford or New Haven, Conn. could be good places for new MLS teams. I imagine that holding a U.S. WC qualifier in Hartford (which will happen in August v. Trinidad, I believe) is a way of pre-testing that market. That is, the Hartford one. But I think New Haven could work because it's easier for ppl in Fairfield county to get to than Giants stadium. Plus it's more multi-ethnic than Hartford. But who knows...
