Well with the NHL's future in the air, a Rochester MLS team would be the only major league team in WNY from March (SU basketball) till August. Companies in the area already have a huge demand for Rhinos tickets to give as comps to their customers. EVERYONE has multiple Red Wings (Twins AAA team) tickets to give away, but if you ask the vendors for a Rhinos ticket they're spoken for almost a year in advance. I'm fairly certain a MLS team in Rochester would create an even bigger demand for comp tickets that the companies would buy as a season ticket package and just as big of a demand on luxury suites. It would be the only event in WNY over the spring and summer that a vendor could take customers from NY, LA, Chicago and Boston to watch our local team compete against their "hometown team. So that means the majore corporations based in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse would be seen as a market for Rhinos luxury suite sales people.

Right now, as a USL D1 franchise, the Rhinos are THE event in town every Friday/Saturday night of the summer. EVERYONE (well ok maybe 90% of the population) in the greater Rochester area knows if they're sitting around on a Friday or Saturday afternoon with nothing to do in the evening that a Rhinos game is a good entertainment option. An MLS team would raise that profile so that a Rhinos game would be a viable option for anyone in WNY.

At one point of the stadium saga the team announced that it had requests for all of the suites that they would build (and I think that that was about five years ago.....). Haven't heard of that for a couple of years, but I know it was a selling point when the stadium idea was initally brought up.

    drew,

Yes, one would hope the Rhinos would be able to expand their presence regionally.

The stadium is looking beautiful. Good luck to Rochester this season and may you soon be a top MLS team.

30 years ago, my late father would tell you that Rottenchester goes for NOTHING. This from a man until his dying day was angry about the NBA Royals leaving town. When I went to see a game it was a Friday night and it was packed. The place was rockin'.

My father would have never believed it. We sat at that pit the NASL Lancers used. It was awful. I learned how to swear in Italian there tough so it was somewhat helpful. <Nothing like calling someone's mom a prostitute in Italian to get someone confused.> ;)

I think the Rhinos are a first class outfit and could teach the MLS a thing or two about marketing and promotions. At least the United could learn something from them. And I haven't lived there in years!

There will be concrete used. Not so much on the interior (besides the supports), but the exterior of the main stands will have concrete.

In reality the Rhinos get a lot more FREE marketing than what they actually pay for. They get that free marketing because of a little bit of luck (first event at Frontier Field in '96) but also because of a lot of on field success. I'd venture to guess that they're actually pretty weak in their marketing/promotions department and know they are EXTREMELY weak in another aspect of marketing, their merchandising (you can only buy Rhinos gear at the team store and NO WHERE else in Rochester or online even). Stores have tried and tried to get t-shirts, hats, scarves, etc but the team just won't even answer phone calls on the subject.

BUT because they have been one of the biggest events in town every summer since 1996, they have gained the respect of local politicos enough to get support for their stadium.

WHEN Rochester is in MLS (expansion? relocation?), MLS will have a lot of work to do with Rochester in the merchandising department. They also should do a lot with their marketing/sales department, but they won't because MLS leaves that to the individual team.

Looks like they need to keep a broom handle around in case the ball rolls under the stands. I used this system in my basement to get ping-pong balls out from under the couch and it's very effective.

That'll be a noisy stadium then with all the metal. I'm sure it will look better when complete, but my one problem with it is that it looks so temporary.

The stadium will have a large...high definition...state-of-the-art video screen/scoreboard, fully furnished corporate suites, majority of seats being individual molded seats, full service multi-media audio/visual equipment, up-scale concessions, located in an exciting downtown district...with great skyline views...and most importantly....fantastic sight lines. By building with Steel and Aluminum...you will get the vast majority of seats...right on top of the field of play. Fairly steep sight lines for the second deck(s)could create the best 'intimate" soccer stadium in the country. What part of the stadium will look "temporary"? Some of the new stadiums being built are made of cement ...but they are built right into the "relatively" flat ground....offering a rather "flat" and distant sight lines. It should be great for sport fans visiting PAETEC Park....clearly better than watching soccer in a baseball stadium where about 70% of the seats are substandard (very poor sight lines).

Should be finished 8/30/2005. It could be delayed till 4/2006 if additional state funding comes through this month for completion of phase II and III.

And for anyone that doubts that PTP is truely a downtown stadium then check this out....

    PTP IS!!! a downtown stadium

If you don't mind walking two miles through parking lots, commercial buildings, and across the river to get there. Kodak office is hardly "downtown" as far as being central to shopping, eating, and other entertainment areas (Eastman Theater, Blue Cross Arena, Convention Center).

I'm thinking that "downtown" means something totally different to many suburbanites. When I go "downtown" I don't hang out on Lyell Ave and I rarely even go to the High Falls. There's more to do in the East End.

It is 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. A 10-12 brisk minute walk to Exchange & Main.

Rochester is a small city. You can get from one side of town to the other in 15 minutes. I think the most important point about this stadium, and this market, is that going to a game will be convenient for everyone in the Rochester area.

Because of poor political/community leadership, Rochester has a small town image. Hopefully things will change with a new Mayor. To put things in perspective Metro Rochester has a population of 1.1 million....approximately the same size as Memphis, Austin, Jacksonville, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Lousiville, Buffalo, Raleigh, Charlotte, Richmond, Providence, Hartford and Nashville. We are not small or large...a typical middle size city.

15 minutes walking? No. Not even close. There are 5k's staged downtown, There is a cycling tour race downtown. That's just a big 'ole heaping bucket of no.

15 minutes driving? Not really, you have to count the 'hood as "downtown" too.

Convienient for everyone in the Rochester area? Getting to downtown is convienient, but once in, it could be better. A closer off-ramp from 490 would help. Re-doing the old subway line into a walkway, like some are suggesting that can end up anywhere close to PTP would help.

How long will it take to get to the stadium in a car from the West End, Brighton or Pittsford?

Depends on where in Pittsford. 20-25 minutes.

You can get to downtown from all of the outer suburbs within 30 minutes. Driving from one side of the metro to the opposing side takes about 60 minutes.
