i assume when i hear a keeper yelling "away" that he wants the defenders to clear the ball. but, what would the opposite thing be for him to call out? "keeper"?

Actually, my friends and I have conversations about what kinds of helpful instructions keepers can scream at their defenders when they get the ball, some examples:

    "KICK IT AT *ME*!"
"KICK IT AT ME AS HARD AS YOU CAN!"
    "UPPER 90!"
    "THROUGH! THROUGH!"
"NUTMEG YOUR FORWARD AND AIM FOR MY FACE!"
"CLEAR IT OFF THE RIGHT POST!"

Never understood why shouting "AWAY" is any more useful to a pro defender than the goober in the 15th row shouting "KICK THE BALL"

I think that it is a mind thing... the defenders know what to do... but a keeper will scream AWAY maybe to intimidate the strikers trying to score...

    I tend to find that:

AWAY/CLEAR IT - means clear the ball out the box
IM HERE - if the keepers happy for you to play it back
MINE/LEAVE IT/KEEPERS BALL - like the rest self explanitary
YOU **********IN IDIOT - try not to do that again dear fellow

Its all self explanitary, there not speakin a forign language (unless they actually are in which case makes it harder) an more importantly did it not occur to you to ask your keeper what he means by what because he should know best.

plus keepers are like managers on the touch line, they see it from a different view and can help the teams tactics also.

sometimes when i saw Perth games (when i wasn't working there!) in the stands the keeper yelled the RIGHT THE RIGHT meaning to push through the right wing for a counter attack, well one game versus Sydney Olympic, it did 1 super cross and a nice header from the wise calls from the keeper.

The opposite is "TIME" or "NO ONE ON," meaning you (the defender) have time to settle and pick out a pass that will bring the ball forward under possession. "AWAY" means just boot it clear.

    Quite simple, really. ;)

the keeper is the one guy who has everything infront of him to see, so he can be a traffic director for the defense and direct counter attacks out. He can see the alleys that are open, he can see attackers sneaking in blind side to defenders, attackers making angled crossing runs etc.

We teach our defenders to push up with the center defender, he's the boss, UNLESS the keeper is there, then the keeper is king and controls where people go and who to cover, where to go when outnumbered etc. Sometimes the keeper wants you to take away a passing lane and give up the shot, sometimes he wants you to force the pass and take away the shot. His call.

I play central defense. (Or I did, until I broke my ankle, anyway. )

When I hear someone yelling "AWAAAAAAAAAY!", that means to just clear it any way I can. Don't worry about giving up a throw, or a corner, or looking to jumpstart a counterattack -- just get rid of it, because I don't have time to do anything else.

Being a keeper myself I was always taught by any coach that I must shout "AWAY" when Im not comeing for the ball letting my defenders know as early and quickly as I can that Im staying put.

Also if I am comeing Im to shout "Keeper" as early as possible. Just quick simple words of command. There are other methods Im sure, but this is one Ive seen used all the time!

When keepers scream "AWAY" that means he wants the defense to pull up so that the offense cant pull up quick. Usually this makes a offsides trap.

yes, I can see where your coming from there, but for an offside trap Ive always shouted "STEP UP" like all other keepers I know do.

Just a short clear word of command so the back four know to all go together.

As others have stated, when the Keeper yells "away", he is telling his player
that there is high pressure on him and the best option would be to clear the
    ball immediately, no other option.
The opposite would be if he informs his player to "turn, you've got time" or
    keeper's ball.
A keeper should also try and give as much info as possible. At times, while distributing the ball I will tell them forward, outside, your help is down the wing. The field player may notice these things already but wouldn't it make you feel more comfortable when your decision is seconded by another teammate who has a great view of the field?
A good goalkeeper's communication can change a weak defense into a better defense, simply by his instruction to his teammates. He can better organize a defense both on defensive coverage and restarting the attack.
Confidence in himself and the confidence the team and coach has in him and his words makes all the difference.

See this is why there is so much conflict between the keeper and his field players.

So just to clarify, if a keeper yells away it means usually on a cross or smthng to the extent the ball is heading away from the goal or across the motuh of the goal in the air. Yes, he does want you to clear the ball if possible .

PLEASE consult the keeper on your team because wehave a lot of things that we yell to keep you the filed player alert and in the game and out of danger. Just liek when we yell keeper, it's not just for our safety but also for yours.

If you need any other help getting into the head of a goalkeeper just visit goalkeeperzone.com and maybe you will be transformed into a keeper from the amount of discussion that we generate.

When I played college soccer, "AWAY!" or "CLEAR!" meant there was no time to try and settle the ball or look for a pass. If our keeper wanted an offside trap, he always shouted "STEP!"

I didn't hear that much of our keeper, since I was a forward and only ever played in the back in two intrasquad scrimmages, and not longer than about 20 minutes each time. As far as I could tell, all our opponents' keepers said exactly the same things.

Not to change the subject, but I've seen a couple people saying that the keeper yells "Step" or "Up" to pull an offside trap. I've actually never worked with a keeper who dictates offside traps. It's always been up to the defenders to pull the trap since they have the best view of the field from side to side. To me, a keeper calling an offside trap is too dangerous considering they are at a distinct disadvantage in judging speed and the depth of the runs coming directly at them. For me, "Away" has always been a keepers way of telling me that I have to get the ball out immediately due to pressure coming on me.

More generally, it lets the defenders know the keeper is NOT coming out to claim a cross or whatever, so they know they need to deal with it. Back in the day, I used to yell "Clear" but that sounded too much like "Keeper," so I switched.
