Ok im sick of arguing with football players and football fans about that football is much better sport then soccer, and that soccer is a p*ssy sport.
Well im hoping that someone can post here like a short paragraph..or like list things why soccer is better then football so everytime someone says something about soccer, we could shut them down.

Any ideas? If you dont know what i mean...then tell me and ill explain more. [IMG]

EDIT: I just saw this person say soccer is gay, its ppl kicking the ball, whats the point...WTF? lol

    That's why I hate football:
    1. All the game is based on set plays and doesn't involve lots of thinking.
    2. Too many pauses.
    3. Too little of actual play.
    4. Look at all those fat defenders, they probably eat a lot of greasy food to be big...brr disgusting.

Isn't there some poem/quote thing about this...

In soccer there are NO timeouts
    There are NO helmets
    NO shoulder pads
    NO commercial breaks
    NO halftime extravagandas
So if thats what you need go play another sport.

Also, everyone is involved in the play during soccer (whether it appears like they are or not). In pointy football, aren't there offensive and defensive lines? So, some 20 players are just standing around on the sidelines (I have no idea of the numbers here... for all I know it could me much more).

Soccer is also an inexpensive sport and people all over the world can enjoy playing it without any worry.

And in my opinion, it seems that there is much more passion in the fans and players towards football(soccer) then towards pointy football. I've also noticed that most people who watch football(soccer) are generally in pretty good shape and alot of people who watch pointy football are somewhat out of shape (buuuuut that's a VERY horrible generalization that i've just noticed in my area).

    1. Men in tight trousers helmets big sholder pads bent over lookin at each others arses? i would go on but thats all ive ever seen before changin the channel thinkin is some late night gay porn movie.

    2. Its not football its American Football, id love to know who thought of the name too, foot...ball.... a foot being something at the bottom of you leg not at the end of your arm which tends to be the more predominant thing used, and ball usually refering to a spherical object not the distorted thing they use. Football should get its name back i refuse to call it soccer where the hell did that come from. Besides if you want american football go get some rugby least when there bent over givin each other a hug its only so they can get close enough to bite the other guys ear off.

For those who don't know, "Soccer" is actually a term that's british in origin. It's short for "Association Football" (the "soc" being from "association") which is a formal name for what the rest of the world refers to as "football". Also Rugby is another form of football. Soccer is only called Soccer in the U.S. to distinguish it from what has, in the last 100 years or so, become the predominant offshoot of the original "football".... soccer. Believe it or not, they all share the same roots.

Here's what I say to people who tell me pointy football (I like that term!) is a "better" sport than soccer.

    1) Anyone can play a relatively normal round of soccer anywhere provided they are able to walk/run, with any round ball. No equipment needed besides a ball. I know this is the same in pointy football, but it requires more

    2) It requires much more all-around athleticism to excel at soccer in any position. Most pro pointy's would quit or die within the first 20 minutes of a professional level soccer game. Pro soccer players could easily play 5 or 10 games of pointy football without a problem. All those rests and breaks between plays and ads and quarters.. I would like to propose that any amateur level soccer player could do the same.

    3) Specialization: No good soccer player is so physically specialized that he or she couldn't adequately perform another's task on a moment's notice. Try having a linebacker play wide receiver. You'd never get a completion.... but put a soccer central defender on as a striker, or a goalie, and you'd probably be just fine.

    4) No breaks: I HATE that every 20 seconds there's a 30 second or more break in play in pointy football. It's disrupting, non-athletic, and panders too much to TV advertisers. Put the ads on-field, or on the players' asses or something, lord knows there's enough shots of them during a game.

    5) Offense...defense... it's all done by the same people in soccer. I think that one pretty much speaks for itself. If any pointy football team has a player that by some miracle does BOTH.... he's considered some sort of a messiah. There are 22 messiahs on the field at all times in soccer.

    6) Skill. Put a pointy football game together, manned only with soccer players who have watched pointy football for a day or two... they would be able to play just fine, I have no doubt of that. Put 22 pointy's on a soccer field, and those who have never played soccer before (and most who have) would be completely clueless. It would likely look like a 1st grade recess, even if they were trying hard. Kicking effectively, trapping and dribbling is not something you can just pick up at the drop of a hat. It would be toe-poke mania, when the ball wasn't out of bounds.

    7) The fans. I know pointy fans think they love their sport... but I challenge that. Maybe it's because it's so overtly American, but the fans are SO fair-weather when it comes to comittment to their club. It's not even funny how finnicky they are. Most of the people I know who are pointy fans would, if their team were in the doldrums for a few years, just give up watching them alltogether and either find a new team to follow, or perhaps even give up watching the sport alltogether, or worse, wait for their team to do OK again before they follow them. In addition, most soccer fans develop a special bond with the game, because it's a game that 9 times out of 10, you grew up playing.

    8) Relegation/Promotion. Professional sports is a great thing to watch, but where's the chance for your team to really fizzle out or triumph supremely....the triumph...the tragedy! Every time I explain the concept of relegation and promotion to a soccer-ignorant sports fan, they always sort of stare blankly. Why? Because they're trained into the awful american system, where the same teams are in the "big leagues" forever. The draft/non-relegation system is a joke, and it demeans whatever sport it represents...baseball, hockey, football, basketball, etc.

    9) Universal rules. FIFA rules are soccer rules, period. Of course this can be stretched a little for special situations (kids games, etc) but all you have to do is check one source for the official rules of the game.

    10) Equipment....to play soccer at the highest level, all you need is SHOES. Shinguards are a technicality, but that's arguably unnecessary IMO. Pointy football you have to wear so much padding that I believe the gear actually becomes more of a hazard to the players than it would be if they didn't wear any protective gear at all. Look at rugby. What do they wear... electrical tape? American football players are BABIES compared to ANY rugby player, and after seeing some of the stuff that happens to soccer players who charge into challenges with little to no protective gear on, I would say any soccer player too. Somehow, there are less serious injuries in soccer though....could it be the lack of hard plastic stuff and steel grid facemasks flying around?

I could go on all day, but I'm definitely biased. Soccer is, as far as I'm concerned, the only sport worth playing or even watching. I play 3 times a week and I wish I had time for more, and I watch it when I'm not playing it because it's so enjoyable to me. Other sports are fine in moderation, but they don't have the longevity, the history, the pace, the finesse, the emotion, the skill, or the overall appeal that soccer has. There are more than 10 reasons it's by far the most popular sport in the world.

I absolutely love both games. I played both sports growing up and see absolutely no conflict between them. I'm a big fan of both sports. Many soccer-haters are ignorant and many American football-haters are equally ignorant. Why debate, it's pointless.

I'm old enough that I don't give a crap what anyone says about soccer any more, but when I was in high school (quite awhile ago now), I got a little tired of my neighbor talking trash about soccer, which I started playing after losing a bunch of weight and being too skinny for football. I dared him to come with me down to a nearby schoolyard (this is in downstate Illinois where there's plenty of room for these sorts of things). The dare was, he would punt the ball as far as he could, and I would head it back to him, then I would do the same. I even showed him the proper technique (off the forehead, try to keep your eyes open even though that's nearly impossible, etc) and had him practice on a few balls I tossed to him.

He punted to me (took him a couple of tries to get it close) the ball travelled about 40-45 yards or so, and I nodded it back to him, got it there on a couple of bounces. I punted it to him, travelled about the same 40-45 yards, though mine was a lot higher.

His technique? He scruched his neck into his shoulders and jumped straight into it. The story ended two hours later when my mom looked out the door and saw his parents walking him to the car so they could take him to the doctor. He had a concussion. Last time he pulled that "soccer is for pu$$ie$" crap on me.

I'm not proud very proud of this, but I'm still prouder than I should be :D

Yer i realise the roots are there with galic, american, and auzi rules all being decendents same way i suppose with cricket and baseball, but dunno why they never changed the name when they dicided to pick up the ball (sorry cant spell by the way), mind never heard that idea of where soccer comes from wonder were the 'cer' part comes from. However i think your on to somit with pointy football, maby just a slight variation on that with pointy handball or pointyball paddedmen, or pointypaddedmenball.

One point about the coolness of soccer that no one mentioned before, is it is the only sport in the world with a true world champion. No great player would ever refuse a World Cup invite, and its the only sport that everyone in the world plays.

If you are tired of people calling soccer players pansies do what I do and become a trained fighter. Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu go a long way to people not calling you a pansy anymore. That and very few football players can run the way soccer players can, its a different type of tough. In all honesty I thought it was easier to be a tough football player; it is easier to try harder when you know if you take it easy someone is going to injure you. Soccer is kind of like cross country or distance swimming where you are trying to push yourself well past the pain zone without the threat of someone beating you up if you stop.

That said, soccer is just different than football. Soccer is the beautiful game while football is pure orchestrated violence. The reason why people say soccer players are weak is because of the guys who when they get clipped they roll around on the ground for half an hour acting like they are going to die. I hate that, I really do. And the people who grab their eyes looking for a card is terrible. If someone tried that while I was the ref I would send them off. I used to card people for diving all the time. And as far as getting kicked in the shins goes, train muay thai for a while and after a few hundred leg kicks those kicks in the shins playing soccer arent so bad anymore.

All this said, dont think for one second I hate football. Lets go Giants, and lets go Jags. Navy will be national champ 2005!

Anyone who starts to compare gridiron and soccer is an fool to start with.

If someone starts the "soccer is for **************" crap, I think your best bet is to look at them as if realisation has just dawned and say, " You know, I never looked at it like that. I can finally see the light, Thank you, so much."

Sarcasm may be the lowest form of wit, but it's still fun.

Alternatively, explain to them that a recent study by the University of California in Los Angeles has shown that more men in the US with repressed homosexual tendencies have been found to watch American Football than any other sport. That may be lie, but it is also funny. I'd advise wearing good running shoes if you plan to use this one.

well said. a professional soccer player would probably sustain a major injury in his first play if he were playing in the nfl, that being said, an nfl player would trip over himself playing soccer in any of the professional soccer leagues except for the mexican league.

The reason you get the argument here in the states is that most high schools have both soccer and football at the same time, in the fall. This generates competition for the available atheletes, the pain is in smaller schools where there just isn't enough of a body count to field both teams.

Both take atheletic ability (ya some lineman are just fat, but in general).

We see it in our town every year. The middle school (grades 5-8) has just soccer and cross country for the kids. They then hit high school and the incoming soccer freshman split around 50-50 for football and soccer. For example, next fall, there will be 16 new freshman that played on the middle school soccer team. I bet 6-9 of them play soccer, others will go to football.

Why compare them? they are different sports, both are fun to play. I played football as a kid, if I did it over again? I'd play soccer.

Football is where overweight people waddle on the field with their negative IQ numbers printed on their backs.

I'd like to see how they would rate Sumo. Those guys are amongst the quickest athletes in the world. At an admittedly short distance.

I love football and I love football.

People who have never played American Football generally have NO idea how freakin' fast the action is on the field.
