Yup... It was one of his two good runs. Two minutes earlier he fluffed a cross, and spoiled a good chance. We really do need to do better on the right. Brown is just fine coming off the bench but if he's our starting Right Midfielder we'll have trouble going anywhere.

I'll add my kudos to a midweek crowd of +/- 12,500. Visiting fans complement the home team, not make up the majority, and the reports of the stadium noise indicate a good RSL crowd.

I'll add my family of four to the midweeker against the real LA team.

One of the funniest things I saw all night was when 4 foot nothin' Trembly squared up on 8 foot tall Ezra Hendrickson...(after a non-call foul on him by Ezra)

The first thought that went thru my mind was what's he gonna do? punch him in the knee...

trembly did look good tho... he finished well and was very energetic!

We need to be careful when publically calling for someone's job and carefully consider the possible consequences. In my experiences, these types of negative campaigns rarely, if ever, turn out the way they were initially intended and always seem to negatively affect the fans and team. What if by calling for Hatch's job we instead lost our english radio broadcasts? Also, remember that most 1280 employees are also local print and tv reporters. There would surely be additional undesired negative attention on the team and fans, again.

We'd be more effective staying positive. Rather than call for Hatch's job, perhaps we could write him a positive email stating what we appreciate about his work and then offer suggestions for improvement?

Oh man, that was great. Ezra was being a punk, and Trembly looked like a midget by comparison.

I thought Frodo, errr.... Trembly stood his ground well. Nobody tries to take Trembly's ring, nobody.

I just want to say that I have never wanted him to lose his job. He hosts a wonderful radio show with Hollywood. I actually gave him another shot last night and thought he did a nice job. Kudos to Mr. Hatch and Co. He will only get better. You know, he's a very popular guy amongst the radio d.j.'s across the country. He could easily get another job. Though I think he's a SLC native and would like to remain in his home town. Perhaps his email should get flooded with positive remarks for a change. After all, I believe his excitement for soccer is more genuine than ever. We are all ignorant in certain aspects of life. I believe he now sees the athleticism in soccer and appreciates that, as any sports d.j. would.

Once again I think everyone is extremely sensitive on this board.... Nobody called for his job....
I think if we can't critique anything we end up living in a quasi police state. Hatch is getting better, but his games are still rubbish. Someone put up Hatch's own email to so that fans could tell him what they think... The guy is thick skinned he's not going to start crying after a few negative emails... In fact I think he thrives on that sort of thing.

I went to the game and then went to the Star Wars midnight screening (yes, I know. I'm a nerd). So this is my first chance to make any comments. I'm still having troubles waking up, so if I say something dumb, forgive me.

Trembly was great. He may be short, but he's speedy, and he wouldn't take any crap from anyone. Excellent goal. My MOTM.

Dunseth made Martins look like a chump all night long. Martins didn't win a single 50/50 ball in the air all night. Dunseth got up over him EVERY time and won the ball. I really like the way that back line has played together the last two games.

Mendoza is fast, but holy crap, stay on your feet. That kid flopped whenever anyone came within a ten foot radius. It got to be ridiculous. The best moment of the match missed by most fans: Medoza took a dive and then got in a scuffle with Trembly (I think). Mathis comes charging across the field, screaming "Pendejo!!! Pendejo!!!" Classic stuff.

And Suarez, If you're going to taunt the home fans when being subbed, it helps if you're not down 2-0 and you haven't sucked all night long.

As for attendence, I thought it was a good number, considering that it was a weeknight game, and most schools are still in session, so there were as many families bringing all their kids. I was fearing the worst (under 10K), so I was pleasantly suprised.

Great win for RSL, let's make it three in a row on Saturday.

Don't worry Hatch isn't going to loose his job at 1280 because of what is said here.

And as far as attendance goes, I am sure that 12,000+ is one of the highest real attendance numbers on a wednesday in MLS in many years (fake numbers that are fudged by int'l friendlies don't count *cough* Chicago *cough*).

Again, I want to thank everyone for posting regarding the Chivas/RSL match. Now lets look forward to the Crew match!
    Sticky is forth coming!

I thought it was great considering it was a Relief Society night too.

As for the game, Cuadros was like a bowling pin falling down left and right last night. i remember 3 occasions in which he just took a dive and feigned injury, only to start running to get back into position when the ref gave him a dirty look.

this game had a much better feel to it than most Rapids saturday games (even better than the rapids home opener) and the Loyalists are definitely the best fan group in the western conference which made an enjoyable game that much more enjoyable! (it was my first game in the loyalists section, and i understand it was much smaller than normal last night)

Don't forget all the teams currently active in State Cup. There were over 20 games last night and I'm sure a lot of the teams who didn't have games were practicing.

I think it was a good crowd considering everything.

    Well...it was a book...but done (before I read your suggestion ;) )

    Good morning Ryan,

I am one of the Loyalists and was unable to attend the game last night, so I listened instead. I suppose whether you want them or not, I do have some comments.

[start with the positive] I think your voice works for soccer. Your tone and inflections let the listener know that something important is happening, or that a call sucked, or that you just have no idea what just happened. Scholsey gets a little excited...let him know he can do it even more...if you get the chance have him listen to the color commentary from the San Jose television feed of their second goal against us...absolutely classic.

[bad news] To get a mental picture of a soccer game over the radio, it takes a ton of actual play-by-play WITH the correct terminology. I know you do not have a soccer background and I think the strides you have made are rather dramatic...but there is a long way to go. My wife stopped listening because she felt like she did not know what was happening on the field.

As mentioned, I think the major problem is finding the correct words to describe what is happening...let me give specific examples. I could not, for all my trying, visualize either Williams' or Trembly's goals yesterday. On Williams, if I remember correctly, I heard Brown splits 2 players, off to Williams, goal RSL! (good excitement in your voice though)...Later I watched on tv and I have the following to suggest. Brown on the dribble from wide across the 18 (or penalty area, but penalty area takes too long, you can call it the 18 and people will understand) splits 2 players (that was well done on your part) slots the ball to Williams, shoots near post, GOAL. (key words...slot=a pass, usually near the goal, usually in traffic...think threads the needle, but way less words...near post = to visually picture a goal, you need to know which post...near post means the post nearest to the ball). After the goal call, you can describe the fact that Williams went "near-post, upper 90"..."Near post, top shelf" (I know that is hockey, but many hockey terms work for soccer)..."Near-post, upper V" Also, any time a goalie gets beat to the near post, you need to let the listener know if he was out of position or had no chance what-so-ever...a goalie is taught NEVER to be beaten near post.

Goal #2: Seth and Cila played a 1-2 at midfield and "sprang" Cila down the left sideline. Keywords are the "1-2" and "sprang" = any pass in the offensive side of the field which allows a player to get clear of the defense and run forward on the dribble. The ball to Brian Mullan leading up to San Jose's second goal sprang him. Kreis was not sprung by Mathis's ball against the Galaxy...it was a long diagonal service to the top of the 18 which Kreis volleyed on one bounce. Cila than "drove" his cross...Davis's service to Ching was not driven, it was a hard bent ball. In the Galaxy game, Clint hit an early service driven cross aiming for Kreis, which went just over Kreis' head...thank goodness, I think it may have knocked Kreis out. Seth made a "bee-line"...his words, but the correct ones, means a straight line directly at something, not trying to hide his intent, just getting there as fast as he can...for the "near-post" for a first-timer (again a hockey term, but it works) or a volley (which you did use) and beat Guzan at the near-post...again.

I have a ton of these terms that I know can help you call the play-by-play so we can visualize the game.

Other examples: Pope "square right" to Pierce...ReAL is holding possession now...Pierce "switches field" to Nelson...

Oh, another compliment...at one point in the game Pope won a header, probably in our own area, and you caught the fact that he headed it, with composure, to Pierce...well done by you, we now know that Pope won the header and that ReAL kept possession due to Pope's quality.

Last...it may help you describe the game if you divide the field into thirds...offensive or final third, middle third, defensive third...this is how the game is taught and how coaches coach, so your audience will either already know or pick it up quickly. For you, think of it as about the 35 yards line at RES. For coaches, how their team plays in each third really determines how the game will go...In the Galaxy game, the Galaxy was quite good in the middle third of the field offensively, they tended to hold possession when they wanted, and get through the middle third to the final third when they wanted through various means...dribbling, passes to forwards' feet, balls over the top to the wings, quick 1-2's...their problem was they were awful in the final third...either choking on the shot or not feeding in good services.

In the same game, RSL was decent in the final third...not a lot of opportunities, but we finished our chances...we got worked in the middle third...could not hold possession, gave the ball away too many times, had problems getting into the final third...and were great in our defensive third (a recurring theme this year...considering how badly outplayed our midfield has been, it is amazing we have not given up more goals)...

Now, I did not see the game yesterday, but here is what I believe, and you can let me know if it is true...RSL managed to win the middle third, the Goats were truly aweful in the final third, and we were pretty good in the final third (2 goals and a few missed opportunities)...of course the opposites are then understood...RSL was great in our defensive third and Chivas were either poor or just adequate in their defensive third.

I'm sorry this is such a rant...but I know I will not get to all the games this year and I want to listen (but do not know enough spanish)...so you are what we've got. If you want to spend some time one day watching video and learning terminology, I would be happy to help...(I know you have already done this...it will just take time and practice)...

i think it's awesome that i changed my avatar to ali g holding up 2 fingers right before the game, and then we scored 2 goals...

anyone with enough photoshop skills want to modify his hand so he's holding up 7 fingers before the crew game?

I agree. It's the middle of the week. It's just that much harder to get butts in the seats on a night like last night. Especially for a crappy team coached by Wrong-Again. :D

Hatch's response to my book on page 11...

"I appreciate the criticism...I'm constantly working to provide better broadcasts every game, and your points of emphasis will certainly help. After doing years of football and basketball, soccer has been a learn-on-the-fly experience.

Again, I appreciate your help, and keep the comments coming."

You THINK it's not a big deal but it usually is. Yes, there is nothing wrong with a good critique. Most of us here could probably write a decent level-headed email to someone with comments and issues we had with a recent article or broadcast that would be received well. However, there are those that will just spew profanity-laced garbage that doesn't have any constructive purpose. This has happened atleast twice so far and both have come from an online "call to arms" email campaign. In both cases the fallout has reflected very poorly on both the team and the fans.

It's fine to be passionate. It's fine to be critical. Let's just do it in a constructive way.

Are some of us a little sensitive? Yes. We realize the affect that one or two bad apples can have on everyone. Let's not encourage them. When you post a "call to arms" or a post encouraging negative feedback, let's remember that there are those that read these forums that won't be objective and will do more harm than good.

We have received more media coverage than just about any other team in the league. Still, we'd all like to see the quality and quantity of this coverage to increase. Let's just do it constructively and not mess up a good thing.

That's because stucknutah's email was well written and constructive. See what happens when you send one laced with profanity with the threat of bodily harm and see how he takes it...

Well.... Threat of bodily harm is not only stupid, but it's illegal.... If there are idiots taking it that far then it's ridiculous. But people should be able to voice their concerns, I mean come on here...

Edit: Also... Jesus, who cares that much anyways? Who cares about the radio broadcast enough to threaten the play by play guy? I mean calling him a fat slob is one thing but threats?

Glad he responded this way . . . given the length of your message to him, I feared he might think of your BS name as "Stuck Nutter" instead of "Stuck In Utah"! :D

I agree with what has been posted - too often soccer fans are so sensitive that they blast somebody in the media when a reasonable message would go far. This is a good example of the positive that can be done.

I agree completely. It seems ridiculous but it's happened recently. I'm all for voicing your concerns. My point is that we should be careful rallying the troops on a public forum such as this as it seems to wake up all the idiots.
