I remember Kelly Gray dribbling 4 guys and blasting a 25 yard rocket past the goalkeeper during his rookie season. As good as Freddy's occasional MLS goals have been, I think Kelly's was better. Then again, Freddy would appear to the naked eye to have a bit more talent than Kelly.
I don't think freddy will get capped for any wcq unless we already have it sewed up. I would not be surprised to see him capped for the gold cup or friendlies. I also expect to see spector for the US-england friendly and gold cup.
Adu dominated the recent DC game - and thats the most storied team in MLS so I would say he is knocking on the door - real hard.
To be serious for a minute, It wasn't just the goal and hitting the post though. I watched the game - he had 2 assists in the first half, but he could have had 5 or 6, the balls he was playing were unreal, I couldn't help but to think what EJ could have done with them, as opposed to Josh Gros
Maybe it's time to abandon the USMNT N&A forum to the MTV generation and have Jesse create a new USMNT Critical Thought forum.
Man, I'm so old that I can't even spell MTV. Hell, VH1 skews too young for me. But fortunately, I found a Wisconsin station on cable that carries that wonderful Mr. Welk. Musical entertainment at its finest.
If you saw the game, NOT just the highlights, you'd be generally impressed with adu's overall game. Was actually defending, fighting for 50-50 balls... pleasantly surprised by his LACK of a celebration following his goal, like big deal, that's what I'm paid to do....
Adu with a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win, DC with how many Championships? No YOU win that award pal, and not the clever part.
On rare occasion, the reputation system does foretell accurately. Although I will admit, you do deserve points for entertainment value.
I think one of the biggest things holding Freddy back is playing time. I believe he has played for less than 20 minutes, in half the games this season. The last game shows that if he gets time, then he can stand out. He might progress very rapidly if he becomes a starter. Hopefully Peter is thinking this too.
Like many posters, I typically receive green rep points when I'm wrong and red rep points when I'm right. But again, you may be the exception.
Forget reps, its facts speak for themselves: NEW YORK -- D.C. United's Freddy Adu was selected as the Honda MLS Player of the Week for the week ending May 8, 2005 (Week 6). In his second start of the season, Adu tallied two assists and his first goal of the year helping United defeat the visiting Columbus Crew 3-1 on Saturday, May 7 at RFK Stadium. At age 15, Adu becomes the youngest player ever to win the award and the first teenager since 2001 when DaMarcus Beasley -19 (Week 21), Landon Donovan -19 (Week 19), and Santino Quaranta -16 (Week 15) each won once. Adu was the catalyst to United's first victory since the season opener by registering two assists within the first ten minutes of the game. At the five minute mark, Crew defender Chad Marshall was able to clear Brandon Prideaux's attempt at goal off the Crew goal line but not completely out of danger. Adu retrieved the ball just to the left of the Crew box and sent in a low cross that Jaime Moreno slotted in from close range to give United the 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Adu sent a through ball between two Crew defenders to teammate Ben Olsen on the right flank. Olsen sent in the cross to into the penalty box and midfielder Joshua Gros met it with a diving header that bulleted into the upper corner past goalkeeper Jon Busch. It was Adu's second assist of the game and third of the season. "He had a very good week of practice and the most important thing is he started to believe in himself," United head coach Peter Nowak said of Adu to the Washington Post following the game. "I can see it in his eyes." But keep trying JohnR, our self-appointed resident "expert"
I'll have you know NAKED EYES are illegal in at least 27 states and D. C. But, with some seriousness, I believe that Bruce should cap Adu fairly soon and get him involved in the camps. The reason is NOT that he is, at this point, truly ready for the international full side; rather it is that, at his rate of development he "could" be invaluable next year and it would be a good idea to get him comfortable with the nats and with Bruce’s coaching. While he does have a deal of experience playing in important matches and dealing with a variety of coaches the experience would be invaluable. It is a bit like an actor taking over a staring roll on Broadway. It is easier if they take the show to the less flashy venue first before performing on the big stage. I do not think he could step right in next year when he is truly ready and be as effective as he could being brought in more slowly and allowed to get used to the players and staff of the national team. EDIT: Just wanted to add that an important WCQ or in the WC itself is NOT the place for a first cap for someone as young as Adu. Get him some play in the less menaingful matches and he will be a muche better player later in the important ones.
Hey, maybe I can play in the against england on the 28th too!!!!!! He can stay with DCU for the next year or two, they need him more than the national team does.
What part of your post do you think he was talking about? Don't answer right away, give it a long hard thought. Got the answer? No? That's ok, you give it a little more time and I'm sure we'll all have a good laugh about it when you do.
