And actually I believe Rochester is a lot bigger than Green Bay. Add that Buffalo and Syracuse are in their market, there is arount 3-4 million people.

Jesus...Portland is ranked #74, and this is mosquito-ville. That's NOT the statistic for Rochester supporters to use.

    Metro areas:

    Buffalo/Niagara Falls - 1,189,288
    Rochester - 1,062,470
    Syracuse - 742,177

30 - 40% of Buffalo Bills season tickets are owned by people in Rochester.

I can't see why a couple of thousand won't make the return trip for MLS soccer. Or more if it's marketed correctly.

Western/Central New York (Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse) is a big sports market. For years, the Buffalo Bills lead the NFL in attendance. Syracuse University has lead attendance for division one basketball. If Rochester was more aggressive back in the 1960's, it could of had of supported an NFL franchise ...rather than Buffalo. Rochester has always been an affluent market with many world class corporations like Kodak and Xerox. It is also logistically located to tap into the Syracuse and Buffalo market. Rochester as a MLS franchise could pull in soccer fans from both Syracuse and Buffalo....maybe not much today...since the MLS does not have the luster of an NFL franchise...but in the future...as the interest in soccer grows...Rochester could easily tap into a 3 million regional population marketplace. There is no Major league baseball franchise nearby...other than Toronto (a three hour drive or a 2.5 hour fast ferry ride). There is no competition from an other summer time major league sport. Rochester Rhinos could easily make money today as an MLS team....and can grow in fans and revenue as Major League Soccer grows in national stature. Now with a quality downtown soccer specific stadiuim and a dedicated soccer fan base, it is about time for Rochester to have a MLS franchise.

Surfed across this site today. Pictures of many (baseball) stadiums in the
Northeast. The section on Silver Stadium reminds me of that messy time in Rochester (and perhaps a reason for our current lackluster climate towards tax sponsored stadia).

The AAA Red Wings threatend to move away if something wasn't done about their stadium. The state gave millions to renovate (see pictures on website). Then, within (can't remember exactly)....... 5 years or so, the team decided it needed an entire new stadium. After tons of political BS (including the fact that the seats of Frontier Field were owened by a third-party) the stadium was finished. And it's a very nice baseball stadium. But original plans had it as a multi-purpose with extended stands down the third base line. Cuts and deals later, we got the nice baseball park and proceded to open it with a fantastic soccer match.

I haven't seen anything that says we are getting the 9 million for phase II. I hope to God it happens because I don't want that money dropped on the west side of Manhattan. But there's a history of lame stadium deals in Rochester, and I think that's where some of the current friction is coming from. (and I was reminded by the pictures of ol'Silver).

That's b/c WMTW covers ALL of VT, NH and Maine and probably a good chunk of Massachussetts too. Rochester is squished in between Syracuse's and Buffalo's TV area.

No, if you read the link it's the metro area between Portland and Auburn, an area of around 30 miles or so. If you were to measure all WMTW's coverage (with cable) you'd have a hell of alot more than 400,000 TV homes. Which is wierd because no one watches WMTW anyway (except you wierdos from out of state who dont know any better:)).

I took three photos of the new section of PAETEC Park. The photos show the double decker side with the corporate suites in the middle. They should be finished with the heavy steel this week. Phase two will add a similar second deck on the other side of the stadium. Note the steep slope of the second deck...offering great sight lines...right on top of the action. The fourth photo shows the High Falls Entertainment district...a few blocks from PAETEC Park.

The photo shows the water falls and the downtown in the background. To the right of the photo (not shown) along the gorge wall is a series of bars, nightclubs and restaurants. The district is still evolving...but the potential is great. During the summer...at night...they have laser light shows against the 150 foot gorge walls.

Isn't there a brew pub down there? I went to a brew pub in Rochester that I remember being right near some falls, but not sure if that was the same area.

Correct...it's now called "BRU"...its a micro-brewery/restaurant. There is also a large brewery across the River..."Genesee Brewery"...I believe its among the largest independant Breweries left in the Country....stuggling to survive against the Mega-Buds and Millers. Its great beer...but not enough money to advertise.

Looking at those photos it seems that it'll only be bleacher seating (isn't Crew Stadium the same way)(I could be dead wrong on both of those). How does that work? Are there lines along the bench with numbers where you sit, or is each section general admission? Will there be any non-bleacher seats?

Either way it all looks good, I'll need to figure out a way to get up to Rochester after the stadium opens in August. Keep the photos coming!

One more time. Fixed permanent seating will be along the sidelines (East stands aka Riverside and West stands aka Canalside.) The North stands (Lakeside) will remain bleachers. They will be numbered, but I am sure that things will not be tightly enforced.

Well I think Rochester deserves the new team. And a new stadium is a bonus I think. Aside from having a new stadium I still think they deserve a MLS team.
Assuming next year Kansas City (which may build a stadium), and/or San Jose both either relocating or folding. Than San Antonio and Rochester should pick up those two teams. Than we would have:
    Eastern Conference:
    Columbus Crew= Has own stadium
Chicago Fire= Has own stadium opening in 2006
Metrostars= New Stadium scheduled for 2008
DC United= Still in the planning stage for a new stadium
Revoultion= No new stadium in the works
Rochester= Has own stadium opening in late 2005
So 4/6 would have own stadium with 1 working on a new stadium and the other not even talking about a new stadium

    Western Conference:
    Galaxy: Has own stadium
    Chivas: Share with Galaxy
    Rapids: Opening in 2006/2007
    FC Dallas: Opening late 2005
Real: In the planning stage for a new stadium.
San Anatonio: Has the Almodome, only occupier
So everyone would eventually have thier own stadium.

Than add Seatle and Toronto in 2007 or 2008
Than add Houston and Detroit in 2009 or 2010

    That stadium looks absolutely fantastic.

Now find a stable, deep-pocketed investor and we'll be in great shape.

How 'bout a weirdo from VT with family currently scattered all over Northern New England who does happen to know that WMTW is the ABC affiliate that comes in by rabbit ears all over Northern New England...if you get cable in VT or NH you probably get WMUR Ch. 9 from Manchester as well.

The Portland TV stations cover from Portsmouth/Dover/Durham all the way up to the little towns north of Auburn/Lewiston (Rumford, Dixfield, etc) over to Augusta and down to Brunswick/Bath. I even seem to recall that Rockland/Camden even get signals from Portland and Bangor. The Portland DMA without shelling out the $75 for the PDF map available for purchase, I'm willing to bet is a massive land area. Heck, even the Orono people get pissed when BlackBears don't get covered in the Portland media. Maybe the Bangor news is relevant and in demand for the potato pickers, but just about everywhere else in the state gets the Portland stations. IF Rochester's DMA was as big of a land expanse, it would cover all of Buffalo's and Syracuse's viewing audience as well. And in fact the regional sports teams do get covered in all three areas, or blacked out in all three areas as the case may be.

Rhinos now asking state for $15 million

Rhinos originally asked for $9million in 2005, but are now asking for $15million from the "Project Fund" of the NYS Budget to get PTP done right. Generelly this reporter has given quite a negative spin to any stadium article he writes, but he included some positive quotes and aspects this time!

Field install will begin shortly and they are still on target to have it completed by August 30th.

Yeah, no kidding. Though I'm not sure the owners have that in mind. MLS talk seems to have faded. Are the Rhinos even looking for an invester now?

If they actually make that work, they'll end up with a $41 Million stadium, $30 Million of which will have been funded by the State of NY.

I would have to hand it to DuRoss as a dealmaker at that point.

You know, though, you have to think they haven't forgotten it, as one of the primary purposes of the expansion from 'Phase I' (what you're seeing in those pictures) to 'Phase II' (the part they now want $15M more from the state for) is an increase in size to a more MLS-friendly capacity.

Maybe the reason they're not talking about it at the moment is that they know MLS isn't interested in a 13k stadium (17k counting 'temporary seating'), so it isn't worth talking about unless they get the money for the Phase II expansion.

    Rochester D&C Editorial Column

Even the D&C isn't anti-Rhinos now. WOW this is a huge swing in momentum. In this article they might still sound somewhat critical of the Rhinos, but really they're being critical of the NYS budget process and showing that all parties involved (like the Mayor) are all for the Rhinos grabbing a piece of the available pie.

But I'm still curious why the paper hasn't been critical of the "Renaissance Square" project which would receive money from a similar fund.
