Can anyone confirm how many clubs qualify for the Champions League and UEFA cup?

Is it the top two placed teams in the league who qualify for Champions League, and the third placed for UEFA?

Do the winners of the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France also qualify for Europe?

    Thanks

    Michael

the top 2 teams go to CL, the 3rd team goes to CL's preliminary round, if they fail they go to UEFA; and the 4th team goes to UEFA

ps: if the winner of the Coupe de France (Monaco (3rd) and Auxerre (6th) are qualified in the semis) is ranked among the first 4 teams, they open a 3rd UEFA cup slot, which means the 5th team would be qualified for UEFA cup.

actually it's the league cup winner who gets into the UEFA cup. since neither strasbourg nor caen risk getting to the top slots, 5th place gets the intertoto.

unless marseille finishes 5th, in which case 5th place just stays home. ;)

yes. but not in next year's UEFA cup; it's next season that will put an extra team into the 2006-7 cup.

    CORRECTION & APOLOGY

in my patented knowall style i've put the old size 41 right down the neck.

the winner of the CdF does play in the UEFA cup. my only excuse is that a certain part of my brain does not want to admit that the cupwinners' cup is no more...

but this post is not just for self-flagellation; i have fresh news. it has been decided that:

if monaco wins the cup and also qualifies for the CL, the other cup finalist will be in the UEFA cup. if monaco wins but only qualifies for the UEFA cup based on standings, then the 5th place team will get the last C3 berth.

Well, it ain't gonna happen. Monaco lost to Sedan in the semis. If Auxerre finish in the top 4, then Sedan will get the Cup spot.

    At the minute;

Champions League Direct Qualification - Lyon
Champions League Direct Qualification - Lille
Champions League 3rd Qualie Round - Monaco
    UEFA Cup - Marseille
UEFA Cup - Sedan or Auxerre
    UEFA Cup - Strasbourg

The three intertoto spots, I think. 5,6 and 7. If Auxerre finish 4th and win the cup - then Sedan will get the UEFA spot.

    Thems the rules.

This system of eliminating the Cup Winners Cup is ridiculous. Now freakin' Sedan is going to be playing in the UEFA Cup in lieu of say Rennes who is having a brilliant season. All because successful cup teams must be rewarded in some way...

Fine reward them with a spot in the CWC.

And Strasbourg....WTF??? OK, so they win the league cup. Big freakin' deal. Now France has to sacrifice 2 of its 3 UEFA spots on weak clubs who had a decent cup run...never mind Rennes or anybody else. Hell, it's a good thing Toulouse has lost it's last 5 league games. It's not like we would have gotten anything for getting some points in those since we didn't play in a cup final this year....

I think the UEFA system dictates that, there has to be a representive of the Cup. Only when two teams who are already in European compeition contest the trophy, does an extra league placing come into effect. The only way they could resolve this frivilous thing is to abolish the League Cup (a daft trophy anyway.) and regain another UEFA league spot.

I would be very disapointed if Rennes got squeezed out of a UEFA Cup spot. They are gonna have to win the Intertoto Cup I guess.

I can understand wanting to give the "Cup winner/loser vs. a top club" team a spot in UEFA, but doing for both Cup and League Cup is a bit much. Hell, I don't even like the idea of a losing Cup finalist making it if they happen to lose against a club who already qualified for CL.

I really miss the CWC at a time like this...

The CWC has some great memories for me.

    Bruselles 96, Rome 99.....Great stuff.

as i understand it, auxerre would have had to finish in the top three (CL spot) for sedan to get the C3 spot without actually winning the CdF. if they qualify for the UEFA cup both ways, then the 5th place club gets the last spot.

so i'm really rooting for les sangliers, in order to give OM the best chance to show their greatness by snobbing once again the intertoto.

Would not be highly improbable for Auxerre to finish 3rd???

    I would have thought so....

We need Auxerre to finish 5th, and get in via the cup spot. The intertoto places will then be open to 6th, 7th and 8th - which is good news for us.
