Ramones Documentary: "End of the Century" on PBS April 26th

    http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/endofthecentury/

Broadcast premiere Tuesday, April 26 at 10 p.m. on PBS (90 minutes)
    (Check broadcast listings)

I saw "End of the Century" recently and really enjoyed it. Regardless of whether you are a Ramones fan or not, I think the music fans on this board would enjoy this film. It does a good job or setting the NY music scene leading up to their arrival at CBGB's, the scene following their arrival and all of the internal conflicts the band managed over the years.

Check it out if you can. I'll bump this thread a few days before the airing (if I remember).

I watched it two days ago-very good.

There is an element of self-pity, that comes through-their anger at having "started" punk and not getting what they saw as their just reward.

But I think there is a large chuck of denial: Johnny may indeed needed to have run a tight ship as Dee Dee and Joey just weren't reliable (understatement :) ). But that discipline-the uniform, the look, the sound-also undermined any potential for musical growth ala The Clash, who moved beyond their original sound. If you have the dvd, the is a funny story by Ritchie in the excerpts, who talks about Johnny's reaction to a song with a minor chord.

Now owning this film, along with "The Filth and The Fury," Westway To The World," and the book, "Please Kill Me"...well, I think I got it covered.

Isn't the theatrical release over two hours long?

I'd throw in the book "Englands Dreaming".

Yep, Ray lists the punk essentials here.

The DVD for "End of the Century" was released a few weeks ago. I picked it up for a steal -- $10.00 at Best Buy. It's definitely worth the extras on it.

I know a lot of people who still think that Johnny's politics and the ethos of the band were incongruous. I always tell those people to read "Please Kill Me." I think Legs does a nice job of showing that the American punk movement didn't seem politically motivated at all. Rather, it appeared to be partially motivated by a more basic desire -- to get back to the simple, basic roots of rock and roll and to eschew the sort of bloated prog-rock that was popular at the time.

The showing I saw started at 10:45pm and I was home by 12:30am so I think it's closer to the 1 1/2 hours mentioned in the PBS listing.

Oh, thanks for the heads up Murph!
I wanted to catch it at the Green Mtn Film Fest. but my crazy schedule prevented me from seeing anything this year.
At least I can see it in that comfort of my own home, and keep it on the DVR :)

Bump for this movie's Uncle Floyd content alone.

For what it's worth, when I programmed my TiVo for this, the guide also mentioned some sort of Joe Strummer program in the same 2 hr. block. When I saw the Ramones doc in the theatre it was less than 2 full hours, so maybe there may be some bonus Strummer stuff. You can never really trust those gudes, so who knows.

Perhaps it was refering to the Joe Strummer interview in the movie. If I remember correctly, he was interviewed in the film. But I might be wrong.

There's something about the pope on here. Well, that's pretty close to the Ramones, I guess.

$100 to the charity of your choice if you can get me an original copy of the Dee Dee King album, with cover art. Double if it comes with a 12" extended single.

So I missed the first 45 minutes of this last night. I'm Tivo'ing it off of another PBS channel tonight, so I'll watch the rest of it then. But generally, I cannot figure out for the life of me why Johnny would have agreed to be interviewed by anybody. Did he not realize that he would come across as just this awful, awful person, even if he is really just speaking his mind and, from a business perspective, probably right about a lot of the things he thought?

Seriously? I don't have the 12", but I'm pretty sure I have the album in storage.

It might be better for all involved if you keep it, and I just donate the $100 toward your professional help. I mean, seriously -- are you Irwin Chusid in disguise? Please tell me that you actually went out and bought it, instead of just getting comped by some A&R goon at Sire.

I have been reading about this stinker over lunch. Somebody posted the press kit, which is probably the best unintentional comedy I've read in years.
It even includes a rap in German. Why you haven't been playing this for your children every night as they go to sleep is beyond my comprehension.

Very cool. I had looked at the KCET on-screen schedule for today, tomorrow and Friday and I did not see the program. D'oh!

    Thanks for the heads up.

Legs McNeil's book is a great resource, but it's all about New York (and some Detroit stuff like Iggy and the MC5).

Ramones were massively important, but you might say that if they didn't form maybe the Dictators or Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers would've fit that role.

Problem is the people who worship the holy trinity of Ramones, Clash and Sex Pistols don't realize there was (and in some cases still is) a whole other world out there.

As a citizen of NE Ohio, I get pissed off Cleveland always gets overlooked. Sure the CBGB crowd loved the Dead Boys and claimed them as their own NYC bretheren, but they were Ohio boys born out of the far superior Rocket From the Tombs who IMO are perhaps one of the most important American bands ever.

Then there's Devo....Akron....Chrissie Hynde too. The Pagans who were just about the nastiest things ever. The Electric Eels. The Rubber City Rebels and my personal favorite Les Black and the Amazing Pink Holes. All of this stuff happened without the help of the Ramones or NYC.

Unfortunately there has been no book, movie or TV special dedicated to Ohio because we're shite and we know it.

Then as much as I'd hate to give credit to the West Coast...they perhaps were the true kings of it all.

Read this book: We've Got the Neutron Bomb: the Untold Story of LA Punk

California...man...the Germs, Avengers, Weirdos, X, Adolescents, Agent Orange, Dead Kennedys...good lord legendary.

Then there's also the Pacific Northwest too with its obscure roster of groups that lived in a bubble and were basically ignored by the national scene.

England...Nevermind the Sex Pistols or Clash, the Damned are still making vital music and IMO could blow Johnny Rotten or Joey Strummer off the stage with Rat Scabies body odor alone.

Lest we forget...Stiff Little Fingers in Ireland...the Ruts doing the reggae thing perhaps better than the Clash.
