Is Brad Evans really the best target forward in this age group?

I'm not saying he's not, since I've never seen him play. But, while I know great players emerge from smaller or less-heralded schools, I'm a little surprised the best target forward in the 85-86 age-group comes from UC Irvine, of all places.

Don't get me wrong, I love the underdog story and am happy to see the kid do well and am certainly pulling for him. But have we exhauseted all our resources with regards to a big forward? I just can't help but think that all the rocks haven't been looked under. (Though when a kid from UC Irvine is on the roster, I guess a lot of rocks have been looked under!)

I watched US U-20 lost to Korea U-20 game. In that game, due to the lack of team work between US players, I was able to observe the indivadual skills of our players. Evens is actually a good player who has good skill. He is very mobile, and play with a kind of European style. I don't know how to put in the word--He is not McBride style target forward and I don't have any MLS target forward to compare. He is not Ching type, and not EJ type. I don't want to put my word here--but he plays kind of like a European target forward.

He's not gonna start, so i dont know why we would need him.

Ochoa and Barrett are both BIG boys.

For some reason, I knew Freddie and Eddie would not be here today...

It got some mention on KIRO radio this morning. Mostly from the standpoint that a certain Mr. Adu would not be playing.

4-1 U20's. Fairly even first half, but the skill, hustle and cohesiveness of the U20's was evident in the 2nd half.

I missed part of the game, but I think the goals went to Chad Barrett, Danny Szetela, Tim Ward, and Feilhaber with a golazo. They announced Barret had 3 assists (which I hadn't realized... so who knows what else I missed).

MF Rogers picked up an injury just as I arrived, so I'm partly guessing at the starting formation.

    Barrett(Alvarez)--Alvarez(Rogers)
    Rogers(Feilhaber early 1st)--Bradley--John--Szetela
    Ward--Wynne--Ianni--??
Kartunen(??long curly haired goalie?? at start of 2nd half)

U20's were quicker, won most of the 50/50 balls and generally looked much more polished than the (pre-season) sounders. U20's were able to switch the point of attack with relative ease (some of their cross-field passes were pretty impressive). Ward was basically a wide left mid for half the game, able to push forward and cause some troubles for the Sounders. Ward had some nice cutback dribbles deep in the box, the 2nd one leading to a sweet 10yd curler past the goalie for a goal. Bradley and John both hustled and linked well with teammates. I thought Barrett caused more problems than Alvarez up top. Chad seemed to have a lot of good off the ball runs and created well. Szetela looked unremarkable at the outset, but as the game wore on, both his atleticism and his skill started to make a big difference. Odd to see Wynne playing central defense. There wasn't too much pressure on the defense, and whenever there was Ianni was there to handle it.

Welton had the goal for the sounders on a miscue by the defenders and Kartunen. Also, Alvarez was subbed out, but then subbed in late in the game when Barrett picked up a knock.

Overall the U20's look good. They need some tougher competition, or wait till these A-League teams are in better form.

Granted, the Sounders are just finishing preseason, but it doesn't appear that USL competition is adequate preparation for the U20s. I wouldn't mind seeing the U20s play one or two more games against MLS (or minimally a good reserve team like the Galaxy) teams before their game against Canada's U20s. The game against Canada will tell us a lot about who is still in Sigi's plans.

I'm glad to see he gave Bradley a chance. I'd rather have Szetela in that spot but Bradley is a huge upgrade over Dalby. Also I'm thinking Barett should be our starting forward at this point regardless of any potential EPL guys wanting in. He functions very well with this team and I think that spot is a complementary one to Adu and Gaven anyway. So anyway here's my new guess at the 14 people who will see time in important games.

    Barett - Adu
    Gaven
    John/Alvarez spliting time - Fielhaber
    Bradley
    Ward - Spector - Wynne - Freeman
    Westberg

Szetela will also play at DM/RM and Ianni will slot in for Wynne or Wynne moves to RB.

It appears that Freeman, Ward, Bradley, and Barett have moved up in stature since qualifying and all have done so through MLS experience.

Watching the game I didn't know who #7 was but WOW I was impressed with Michael Bradley. Danny S. was better than I'd ever seen him play.
