Yes, many thanks to all those who went, you are my heroes. To brave to the potential dangers of going to a foreign land to cheer on our side is highly commendable. As Justin Cedar said, when the flag came out it was an awesome sight. Thank you, hopefully, I'll be able to join you in '09!
I got hit by a bag on my leg and I was scared to look after I felt it hit me but luckily it was only a bag of frozen grape juice.
Yeah, there was the expected trash talking and posturing before and after the game, but that's all it was. On the way out of the stadium there were still plenty of Mexican fans around and they talked trash and I gave it in return, but I never felt threatened at all. I really enjoyed the experience.
I definitely got the better part of a beer on my back from over the fence so I know a Mexican fan threw it but as I told someone after the game, I've seen worse/more menacing behavior from hockey fans at the old Chicago Stadium and we were all rooting for the same team there! (Go Blackhawks!) The vast majority of Mexican fans were really cool as were the 'policia' and I never felt really threatened although the potential is always there. It was really well put together by the two Feds, the Soccer Vacation folks, the cops, and the US & Mexican fans themselves who were intense but mostly respectful. Our fans kept up a racket for 90 minutes and the Mexicans appreciated that. I'm proud of our fans. We behaved like knowledgable supporters; not tourists and not hooligans. The better team won 'on the day' but I really want to see us pound Mexico in Columbus. The first thing my wife said after 'Hello' was, "What is that Blanco's problem?" BTW, Yezenia and Matt, it was great to meet you guys! Hope to see you in Chicago for the England friendly. My wife will be with me and maybe we'll have some Mexican food that won't keep folks sitting up at night.
It was nice meeting you too. Here's the newspaper article from the Arizona Republic, and you've got a quote at the end. http://www.azcentral.com/php-bin/clicktrack/email.php/3007064
I saw the telemundo pregame show. So which one was metroflip? the guy with the white beard, the guy standing to his left chanting like a maniac or the guy with the red hair?
I am working out the details (read: negotiating with my wife). I just have to: A) Make sure I have (or kept) my job through December B) Manage to find funds outside of the household budget. I am think of starting the facebook cause "get todd to azteca". 500 friends at $2 each should do the trick.
I'm in too. It's going to be different than the previous two WCQ at Azteca. This time, it's a night game. Can't wait.
I'm in. And trying to get some more folks from DC/Columbus so there is a bigger representation than 1 this time.
