Re: Retro night? A DIPShit perhaps? Why didn't anybody hold on to the rights to "Team America" is the real question...Imagine what they could've got off those 'South Park' people...
Re: Retro night? Hey if we do this, I've already got my DIPS shirt! They had them at the Adidas Store in Georgetown a while back but not sure if they still have them.
Re: Retro night? Not sure if El Jefe trademarked "Dips United" or not..... Where have you gone Ken Mokojoa, Alan Spavin and Bill Irwin? I did see a for sale sign on a house in Sterling last week with Kurt Kuykendall's name on it. I believe this is the same guy who had a brief stint with the Dips.
Re: Retro night? Ken "The African Racehorse" Mokojoa Bill " The Irish Magician" Irwin And who can forget.... Gary "running around the field like his head is cut off" Darrell Who remembers? "The secretary of defense"
Re: Retro night? Uh, I don't. Damn Alzheimer's! I suppose it would be an interesting test of fading memories to see just how many Dips we can remember. Andreas Maseko Dragan Radovich I suppose this is now off topic, but the way I see it, DCU is the legitimate son of the father.
Re: Retro night? I remember when Bob Irusciano (sp) the night that he had an own goal. Eric Martin, GK from Scottish, who broke his leg in the late '70s playing indoor soccer without shin guards. Back in those days, shin guards weren't required. He was my college coach in the early '80s. Billy Irwin replaced him. There was a dutch guy named Vim Jansen (sp) played a central midfielder role. Can't remember the left back. Of course the coach, Gordon Bradley. I met the "secretary of defense" in a box with Eric Martin at a Team America match in the '80s.
Re: Retro night? i stumbled across the answer to that while trying to check out whether the Rangers held the trademark for Senators. the answer is the Virginia Beach Mariners. filed on sept 1, 2004.
Re: Retro night? Maybe this is cheating, but I found this page, which names all the Diplomats' players from their 1974 to 1981 incarnation: http://home.att.net/~nasl/rosters/dips.htm There's also more about the Washington Whips, Washington Darts, and Team America on this page about the NASL: http://home.att.net/~nasl/nasl.htm
Re: Retro night? And here's a team picture of the 1974 Diplomats: http://home.att.net/~naslpics/teampics/74_dips_bw.jpg
Re: Retro night? Wim Jansen He managed Celtic for the 1997-98 season and helped them win their first title for 10 years, keeping Rangers from overtaking the record the Bhoys set back in the 60s-70s
Re: Retro night? We need a couple of retro ideas: 1. Team America Day with a US-MLS doubleheader. DC United wears the 1984 Team America strip (which looks very much like that being worn this year by FC Dallas). 2. NASL Night as DC United wears the red DiPS kit against another retro-wearing team (Revs at Tea Men? Metros as Cosmos? FCD as Tornados? Or even better: get the Crapids to wear the ridiculous Caribous of Colorado jerseys, complete with twirling tassels!) 3. ASL Night as DC wears the kits of the Washington Darts. 4. S&M night as DC wears the uniform of the Washington Whips. (Chains and leather optional.)
Re: Retro night? Why on Earth should we try to glom onto the tradition of a team that no longer exists, especially given that our team has a damn good tradition of its own?
Re: Retro night? Exactly, we should 'throw back' no further than 1996. If other teams need to go reaching into the annals of history in order to find something, so what?
Re: Retro night? Exactly, why make a connection to a league that failed? (there's probably like 100 people in the metro area who remember the Dips). What's that Johnny Mercer song, Accentuate the Positive... K
Re: Retro night? Retro jerseys by definition are jerseys that failed. At some point the team decided to get rid of the jerseys or the team dissapeared. They're still cool. The negro league went out of business AND is a reminder of racist ways of our country years ago. Yet, everyone likes those jerseys. Who cares about the history of the league, this is about jerseys.
Re: Retro night? I went to see the Dips with a buddy because we could buy beer underage at RFK at age 15.....That's how I got my first exposure to the sport. However, as Shep Messing once said "How can you take a team seriously with DIPS written across the chest"
Re: Retro night? Let's not forget the ASL Stars with Sonny Askew, ASPL Washington Stars with Bruce Murray, or the 88 ASL Washington Diplomats (ASL champs).
