Wow, is it just me or did Roy Carrol's performance remind anyone else of the days of Fabien Barthez. He looked absolutely lost on the pitch against AC Milan. It was embarrasing to watch. And also what was with Ronaldo being taken off? He was playing better then Giggs was.

Difference, Barthez at least has some Championship Medals at home. Anything Carroll has, he got for being part of the team.

Also, I agree, Giggs should have come off & CRon should have stayed on.

No, Barthez was different. He had lapses of judgement, not of actual skill. Like that stupid offside against DiCanio. He rarely did things like drop crosses or shots. He came out at the wrong moments, etc. More like Lehmann than Carroll. Roy's decision making isn't the problem. Its what he does once he makes the decision that's the real issue.

Barthez was solid fundamentally, but he had quite a few head-scratcher moments that led to his demise. I don't recall him pulling any true howlers though; certainly not in a pressure situation and nothing like Carroll's mistake yesterday.

What about the two clangers against arsenal at the library when he came for the ball and went over it leaving terry henry with a simple tap in.

I think you nailed it. Carrol has made his gaffes and we know them, Tottenham, Lyon, and now against Milan. But I think he is a good shot stopper. yes i said shot stopper. yes i mean it!

He handled the ball poorly and that caused the Milan goal, and he seems to be adept at letting past the long range drives. If anything his handiwork is poor. But since he took over from Howard, he has done well stopping shots IMO. barthez i remember his wandering across the goal area, coming out too early, poor positioning, etc...
