And I am the anti-Kaitlyn/uber-Kaitlyn. I hate MLS with a passion and love-hate San Jose!

I am a huge San José Earthquakes fan. And like any fan of anything or anyone, I am critical of OUR team when we lay an egg.

Lately, we’ve looked like a poultry farm.

In that regard, last night was refreshingly non-shitty. Yeah, we gave up a tying goal, and that sucked, but otherwise we played well. We looked like we had a plan. We weren’t awful.

Yes, that’s a pretty low bar. For now, I’ll take non-crap. In the longer run, I want Luchi fired, maybe Leitch too.

    Go Quakesfans!!

Well, the Quakes were awful at finishing last night.

Matt Doyle's take on the game:

"Austin got themselves a very solid and very fortunate point in San Jose, riding Brad Stuver and the woodwork to a 1-1 draw that moves them to 6W-2L-2D in their past 10 games despite having the worst expected goals differential in the West.

    I mean…

[video of our 91st minute clown show failure to score]

Sometimes the soccer gods smile upon you.

The Quakes remain down at the bottom of the West on PPG, but have been much more respectable (2W-2W-2W) over their past six, and Hernán López looks the part of a very good No. 10. If they keep playing like they did this weekend they’ll string some wins together."

Y'know, it's funny. In all my years hanging around Quakes locker rooms, I don't recall ever meeting the guy...

That surprises me. It really does. First Clash player I ever remember meeting was Tom Liner and Dave Salzwedel at a Dave Gold camp called Go 4 Gold Soccer Camps

I gotta' say, some of the posts lately have tickled my funny bone! I appreciate that, as otherwise it's been kinda' depressing being a Quakes fan.

That’s correct. I meant Matt Doyle. I saw John Doyle all the time.

Did Matt Doyle ever actually play soccer, in any capacity of note, or is he just a keyboard warrior?

There was a guy in this forum who had a short-lived podcast where in an early episode, he interviewed Matt Doyle. Doyle said he never played soccer because he had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. I always wondered if that’s why he called himself the armchair analyst.

Well if there is a health reason like that, that's totally understandable. I have barely played myself not because of any health issue but because no one in my community / age was playing it when I was younger and so I somehow didn't discover the sport until middle age. Still thinking of getting out there and playing pick-up, but worrying about getting injured and also looking like an idiot :).

Jazzy, I started playing soccer at age 49. I then played 15 years, but I sucked and never figured out how to kick a ball. But I still miss playing. Also note, taking soccer classes at Canada College really improved my refereeing, because playing with 18-20 year old talented Hispanic males, I realized how a skilled player can avoid contact if he/she wants to. The guys all flamed any player who hurt “la senora”. :)

And of course, when you’re the worst player, it always helps to bring a really good ball!

I took a class at a community college - that was the first time I played. I was probably at least 20 years older than almost anyone else. I actually didn't do that terribly because I was about the only one who was actually trying :). The other problem is that I'm pretty strongly nearsighted and don't wear contacts. I think what I should do is get lasik and then start trying to play again. But running is a key part of what I feel like I need to do to stay healthy and I'd hate to blow out a knee or something playing soccer.

Met some Peruvians pregame at the Orlando match. One was 58 and tried to recruit me to play in his over whatever league. I told him I would keel over and collapse. :)

I played until I was about 55 but decided at that point that I hurt myself I might not be able to ref anymore and quit. Also, the >50 guys were all cranky bitches compared to my >35 buddies.
