I agree with this sentiment. It’s truly not your fault, and they can always have a licensed team manager or some responsible adult come over and finish the last 5 mins (pending rules of competition). But if he has no other option and the match has to be terminated. That’s on him. the laws are also pretty clear on what to do with team officials who are: failing to cooperate with a match official e.g. ignoring an instruction/request from an assistant referee or the fourth official showing a lack of respect for the game You’ll be helping the next teenage referee that has to ultimately deal with the a-hole coach and when that teenager does the right thing (sends him) it won’t be as much of a surprise to the coach (one can only hope!) @La Rikardo
President's Cup state finals game, I'm AR1. 93 degrees, heat index of 99, teams are playing their third game in two days. We are doing two hydration/cooling breaks per half. On the adjacent field, a 16 year old girl collapses during play in the first half and starts shaking violently on the ground. I notice this happening as the spectators start screaming, and play drifts to a halt on my field as well. Give the crew all the credit in the world, the referee noticed immediately and hit his whistle frantically to get the trainer over. The girl ended up being okay but definitely was suffering from heat stroke. We're all a bit shaken but life goes on. We come back from halftime and the coaches on my field and I notice at about the same time that the girl who collapsed not 20 minutes ago has been sent back onto the field by her coach to start the second half! Now, I wasn't fully involved in the situation but I was paying attention and got the download from the trainer after the game - coach claimed the girl had an asthma attack and she was totally fine. Trainer (rightfully) said no, the player is not medically cleared to reenter the game. Coach responds by berating the trainer until she starts crying, then turns on the tournament director who has been summoned by the commotion, insisting further that the player should be allowed to play. He didn't calm down until the third golf cart full of cops showed up and started hovering around the situation but managed not to get sent off? Somehow? Anyway, my heart rate still rises in anger when I think about the situation today. I cannot believe that a coach would be so ignorant or callous of his responsibility to the children on his team to send a girl back out in that heat - let alone in a meaningless (#3 v #4 in a four team group) game!
where are the parents? And why would they let that fly? Hopefully, referee noticed it was the same girl and goes to get verbal clearance from trainer and refuses to let her back in. bunch of nonsense.
Referee did notice, and the parents from that girl's team sought him out after the game to thank him for his actions. I agree and am debating with myself whether I have a responsibility to make a report.
Sure you do. The feeling someone may have to not make too big a deal out of an event is why these rules are in place why and training is mandatory.
All totally fair, and I'm normally the sort of referee who is perfectly happy to stamp out bullshit by showing cards, but for whatever reason I didn't feel like he crossed the line with respect to misconduct. He certainly didn't “fail[] to cooperate with” any instruction of mine, he didn't say anything overtly disrespectful, he just brashly and incorrectly insisted that I'm apparently not supposed to look at the field while sprinting toward the goal line. I suppose I could call that a lack of respect for the game if I wanted to, but my mind wasn't there. From a karmic perspective, this guy absolutely deserved to get sent off, it certainly could have been justified, and I kinda wish we would have. But I also think that's discretionary; for me, he didn't do anything that made me feel compelled to insist on a yellow card at the time.
@La Rikardo if he did enough for you to raise your flag and call the center referee over to deal with the coach, then he did enough to get that card and go home early. Don't bail the coach out here. You made the decision to call the referee over. You made decisions to post on this message board for, I assume, guidance and opinions but you keep talking yourself out of it. If the coach didn't do enough to warrant a yellow, then you don't need to be stopping the game and calling the referee over. If he did, insist on the caution and take the 10 minutes to write the report. You've spent more time on this message board pondering about than it would've taken to write the report and move on with your day. And, the other poster said it correctly also..... dealing with this coach helps the next referee on the next game because you made the right decision to deal with him in your game. That's secondary here, but if you use the LOTG as they should be used, then there's no doubting after this coach is dismissed.
Nope, I'm actually not particularly interested in “guidance” from randos on the internet. I've been doing this for as long as these players have been alive and I'm comfortable with my own judgment. I shared this story on the “Bad stories” thread because it was a unique and frustrating experience that I (correctly, it seems) thought may be interesting to others. Did I ever say I didn't want to do paperwork? I mentioned the referee probably didn't want to do paperwork. Obviously I have no problem writing up what happened because I did it here. I also sent multiple paragraphs to the SYRA expressing my safety concerns about this coach. As I said, I chose not to insist on a yellow card because I don't think he did anything that required it. Maybe for you talking to the referee necessarily means you're going to insist on a yellow card every time, but that's not my style. Absolutely this is an excellent and valid reason to insist on a yellow card, but I didn't do that, I don't think it was necessary to do that, and I'm happy with my decision-making process in this situation. I encourage you to insist on a yellow card if you are ever confronted with a situation identical to mine.
I was given a new referee wallet, with branded cards and whatnot, by one of my assignors. I figured 'hey, let's try it out' on some local matches. I decided to use the wallet on some local matches, and go back to the old school method of bringing the book out of my chest pocket, writing down the booking, then taking the card out and showing it to the player. I used the new book for two youth games this weekend. A U19 and a U15 match. Red cards in both. I'm thinking the book or the cards must be defective....

I was looking up the laws of the game to determine if there are separate rules for the goalie inside or outside the six yard box. (Related to the Portland - San Jose game last night - for example, and this is totally hypothetical, if the San Jose keeper is in the penalty area but not in the six yard box, can the Portland attacker just absolutely crush him on a 50/50 ball as long as he gets a toe on the ball first? And then get a penalty kick from the extremely bad ref? It's a hypothetical but some people were speculating that if the collision took place outside the six yard box, it was a legal challenge, as if the six yard box is some kind of magical wonderland where the keeper is protected but the rest of the field is just open ********ing season on the goalie as long as you touch the ball first.) The actual answer per the laws of the game is, no, the six yard box is just for goal kicks, a goal kick has to start inside or on the edge of the six yard box. But one of the AI answers was "opposing players can't set foot in the six yard box". dude wtf bro? There was a feedback button where I could flag that answer as factually incorrect, but I couldn't find the button that said "never give me AI answers again in the future you ******** ******** ******** ******** ******** ********"."

I had an absolute disaster on Saturday night. I came up to Chicago to get an out of state assessment or two from non-STX coaches. It had been drizzling most of the afternoon and when we walked the field about 45 minutes before the game there was a little standing water just off the field in the two corners on AR2's (my) side. The corners had drained before we started. During the first half it starts raining a bit more about half way through. On a run down to the corner I realize that the driveways at the corners were funneling water from who-knows-where onto the corners of the turf and I was running through a puddle, great. A short while later I'm walking upfield and realize that the stands drain onto the edge of the retaining wall and most of it ran onto the turf. Around the 42nd minute the game became a farce with players unable to complete a 5 yard pass on the ground or dribble the ball in front of them. I was standing in an inch of water at midfield and there was at least 2 in the corner. The referee was desperately trying to get to halftime but at ~43:30 he stopped on a throw in to try to figure out what to do. I'm now standing at midfield, 10 yards onto the field because that is where the puddle ends. The referee calls the league hotline and nobody answers. He calls the general inquiries number in the handbook and the response is, "How'd you get this number?" 10 minutes into the suspension, it is still raining with periods of heavier stuff, I'm standing 15 yards onto the field and now I'm jogging back and forth and shuffling to keep warm every few minutes because it is 60, I live in Houston, and, as I told someone in the stands, I was cold the second I got out of the car. At about 17 minutes I go across the field because I'm sick of standing alone and shortly after, it starts to rain hard. One of the coaches asks if we really need to keep the players on the field and we send them to the benches while I go and stand under the small overhang for the press box. A tad bit later, the game is officially suspended for the night and the coaches start going through the process of trying to continue the game. Long story short (too late), the game resumes at an indoor facility Sunday morning for the last 46 minutes. AR1 and 4O have conflicts so I get the pleasure of AR1 without a 4O and someone else comes to do AR2. Maybe I've lost all sense of perspective living in Houston, but I didn't think .5" of rain in 45-60 minutes was that much.
Thanks for sharing the video. Your post was spot-on. Sorry if I'm being harsh, but he only had a minute to go before halftime (not including any stoppage time being added). It was already bad for 5 minutes. I can't see why he couldn't get to halftime to make these phone calls. It was a bad look to have folks out there on the field being pelted with cold rain when waiting another minute, this all could have been done in shelter. I'm sure I'm missing something?
I don't think you're wrong. I think it would have been justified sending to the bench around 37' and it would have been better to just have everyone take shelter while trying to reach the league but then again, it isn't expected to have to call multiple numbers and finally talk to the league because a coach was able to reach their contact.
