DC United doesn't have the best track record with youth players. Yow had MLS 937 minutes and already has over 1,500 in Belgium. Hopefully Fletcher can break through FTFY
Fair, but DC had a nice academy assembly line going for a while and really only Paredes panned out. Durkin, Nyeman, Yow and I think I might be forgetting a couple others
There are quite a few others. Panned out, is a matter of definition: USL to MLS to Belgium to Scotland to Germany? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.C._United_Academy We should probably take this to the DC United/Academy Thread and leave Griffin Yow's thread alone.
I think he’s saying if Yow can get that many minutes with this club why couldn’t he get as many with DC. To me the most likely answer would be that DC has better players who played ahead of him. And this gets to the whole Yurp v US debate. A lot, and I mean a LOT, of American fans don’t really grasp how far apart the different tiers within a league are. Our pro sports work on the parity model where they try to create a level financial playing field. Many Americans just really don’t get how far apart clubs like Waterloo and say Anderlecht are. EDIT. Westerloo damn autocorrect
So this is from Footystats and is last years numbers. So take the numbers with the source. But you can see a massive difference between the top clubs and those at the bottom. I would bet that Westerlo would have ranked 12-14 in these rankings.
That average salary number tells you all you need to know. I honestly, sincerely wonder whether the biggest spending USL team has an average salary of 100K Euros. It might. And of course the USL season is short enough that the players can play indoor in the winter. I know when my kids played youth soccer we would see Carolina Railhawks players running practices for paid travel teams. My point is that USL players have easy ways to supplement their playing wages. Add that in and I wonder which set of players make more.
Former Westerlo assistant Mo Messoudi has stated that he anticipates Westerlo to use these matches to bring lots of players from the U21 team into the full team. There is nothing for Westerlo to gain from these next 9 matches except to work on the team for next season. Yow was a beneficiary of this method last season. He only had one appearance during the season, but played in 5 of the 6 matches in the playoffs for last season. 2022-2023
Yup, that was the plan last season and Westerlo actually had something to play for last year in the playoffs. There is an interview earlier in the this thread where Yow explains the plan laid out by the club for his progression. This season there is literally nothing for the club to play for. Last season they had 7 starters that were on loan, including Bryan Reynolds, and the club tried to maximize their usage. T
Yow plays 62 minutes in the process of getting crushed 3-0 by Gent. One chance created but 0/5 on duels. Question for the rest of the year for him will be if they prioritize getting him minutes, or prioritize even younger, less experienced players.
From The Athletic (sub required): Three MLS clubs are considering a move for Yow, a former D.C. United homegrown currently playing at Westerlo in Belgium. Yow, 21, is likely to move from Westerlo this summer after a breakout season, whether back to MLS or elsewhere in Europe. He has seven goals and six assists, which propelled him into the mix to potentially be selected for the Olympic team this summer. https://theathletic.com/5436540/2024/04/22/mls-transfer-deadline-galaxy-puig/
I am not sure how long this tweet will be up, but really nice assist from Yow vs. St. Truiden here 🇧🇪 Goal: Lucas Stassin | KVC Westerlo 2-1 Sint-Truidense pic.twitter.com/XyBjIbDelC— Fernansh Era (@BrunoFernanshh) May 3, 2024
Nice assist indeed. Yow having a very nice season. That is 7/7 G/A across all comps... including 1/3 G/A in 6 playoff games.
