HITC understands the Football Association are actively doing background work on potential candidates to replace Gareth Southgate this summer.Eddie Howe is someone who the FA feel would be a very good fit to replace Southgate.https://t.co/8qzdjA5eYO— Graeme Bailey (@GraemeBailey) May 10, 2024
It sounds like the FA are getting concerned about who they might end up having to offer the job to if Southgate goes after the Euros by how much they briefing they want him to stay.
The FA pretty much always want managers to stay after tournaments. It's only really off the pitch issues, or failure to qualify that see England managers removed from the job. Maybe a historically bad loss, I assume Hodgson wouldn't have been renewed in 2016, but even then only after he continued after finishing bottom of the group with one point in 2014.
It feels like this time the main two candidates they like, Potter and Howe are either not interested or available and after that it seems it might be Cooper who again has been reported as not being interested. I would prefer they then take a gamble on Carsley before looking at some other candidates,
As well as Manchester United, Mauricio Pochettino could emerge as a serious candidate for the England job…if Southgate goes after Euroshttps://t.co/hWN9m9VOUu— Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) May 22, 2024 Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler England will consider Mauricio Pochettino if Gareth Southgate leaves after Euro 2024 Argentine has long-standing interest in England job, which is likely to become vacant if Southgate’s side do not triumph in Germany Mauricio Pochettino will be a leading candidate for the England job if he remains out of work and the post becomes available after Euro 2024. Pochettino left Chelsea by mutual consent on Tuesday and is likely to be of interest to Manchester United if the Old Trafford club sack Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup final. Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad are also tipped to make a check on Pochettino through the club’s sporting director Ramon Planes, who worked with the Argentine at Espanyol. It is understood that Pochettino received a pay-off for leaving Chelsea, but it is currently unclear whether he can return straight to work at another club or in the Premier League. The England job is one that has been attractive to Pochettino for some time and he announced his interest in succeeding Southgate during the World Cup in Qatar two years ago. Southgate is expected to leave his post as England manager if his team do not win the Euros in Germany this summer. Asked in an interview with The Athletic in 2022 whether he would be interested in managing England, Pochettino said: “Of course, my relationship with England has always been very good. We have a very good relationship with the academies, trying to develop young players for the national team. “I feel so comfortable here. You never know what happens. I am open to everything.” Track record of developing England players Pochettino is well-known to Football Association technical director John McDermott, who would be influential in choosing any successor to Southgate, having worked closely with him at Tottenham Hotspur. The 52-year-old has an impressive track record of developing English players who have graduated to the senior national team under him, the latest being Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer. Asked this season whether he is proud of his record of providing players for the England team, Pochettino said: “Always, when I arrived at Southampton we were really proud to provide players to the national team because we are so grateful to English football because of the way you have received us, the welcome. “How welcome you make us feel from another country, I think you all try to respect the identity of the countries, the culture and identities of football and English football through the players. “We love the English culture and in every single club, like in Southampton, then Tottenham. We are grateful through giving the possibility for the England team to have players that get the possibility to play.” Asked why he felt such a connection with English football and the national team, having played for Argentina, Pochettino said: “We care, we are very respectful with the way that you treat us. I am Italian through my great grandfather. He moved to Argentina, then I moved to Spain and then France and then England. And you really understand when you start to move countries how people treat you. “Sometimes not in a good way when you are foreign people. But when we were at Southampton, Tottenham and now here [Chelsea], the English people treat us well. It is an amazing thing. Not just us, our families too. It is why I feel at home when I am in England.” Pochettino is not the only foreign manager who would be interested in succeeding Southgate, as another former Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel, would also be attracted to the job.
Talk of Graham Potter going back to Brighton . Does feel like the FA might well strongly consider Pochentino or Tuchel.
Hang on, it wasn’t that long ago that you were adamant that no way will there be a non English manager, managing the National team due to the uproar on social media. What’s changed?
Well it does seem like he wants it. (Which is more than what the press say Potter and Howe do). The Telegraph has been saying for a long time how McDermott knows him well and how he has a major say.
It’s going to be fascinating to see how prepared the FA actually are. If they not prepared it could be a shambles of a search if a vacancy occurs.
Well, it’s almost certain that Southgate will go after this Euro’s as I can’t see us getting that far with our defensive problems. They should start planning now imo.
Problem is the FA don’t seem rate any of the more likely alternatives so are just hoping he will stay on. Particularly if the reports Potter and Howe don’t want it. Still not entirely convinced they will go non British when push comes to shove.
Have they stated this? I’ve not heard anything that suggests they don’t rate other options to take his place.
Not directly but the fact they desperate for him to stay shows they don’t have a preferred successor waiting in the wings
That’s probably just because it’s the easy option for them but that doesn’t suggest they don’t rate others.
Not necessarily. It's not impossible that they just genuinely really like Southgate and would prefer him to stay on than go with even someone like Eddie Howe. Southgate is the most typical FA manager you could imagine, he's almost their ideal mould.
If Potter goes back to Brighton I think that narrows it down to Cooper, Carsley, Pochentino and Tuchel.
