Could have just been timing. Fire wanted him for the full MLS season, but now needs to sort out the international roster spots before signing anyone.
First indication of a willingness to overpay, but... This. Red Star Belgrade were in Champions League. They also were still in the Serbian Cup. They sold Jovan Mijatović to NYCFC for over $8,000,000. Had the Fire waited until summer they probably could have had him for the same Austin paid.
Agree any one transfer is not conclusive proof of a trend. In this case, if accurate,Fire were willing to pay $10.0 million for this player on 1-24 when he was valued by Transfermarkt at $7.5 million . This same player is now being sold at $7.5 million, confirming the recent Transfermarkt estimate.
Not really talking about during summer (or next year). If reported attempted purchase at $10 million is true, that certainly looks like “overpaying”. One example does not prove a trend, however.
Guys- this player was apparently shopped to a lot of clubs, including West Ham and LA Galaxy. IF, big IF, the reports are true, above-market price was offered by Fire. Your best comeback would be that the report is false, only a tall tale from a player’s agent. Which could easily be the truth, in which case,……. Sorry to bother you!
