Nancy was asked today about adding to the roster and gave a vague answer about he is fine with adding talent as the question was phrased like he didn’t want to add ppl mid season. But Nancy definitely didn’t get into any specifics.

If he says we need to add talent, it is a public dis on the guys we have. A good coach is not gonna want to do that.

Coaches commonly say that they always are looking to "improve the roster." Or "add depth." I mean, these guys are pro athletes. I'd like to think they're aware enough to know that none of them are guaranteed a job. They have to earn it everyday.

What I think few players understand - becuse they spend their time focusing on they're paid to do - are how the roster and budget rule intricacies of the league drive what the club can and might do, and when. The rumored mid-year roster rules tweaks (esp the rumor that teams might get an influx of add'l GAM), along with the long-held tradition of bringing in players over the summer window at a pro-rated salary budget hit, will change the calculus, not just for us but for teams across the league. In a league that's constantly improving, we can't afford to sit tight. Any lingering doubts about that should have been put to rest when FCC came into our house and embarrassed us. Yes, players who just emerged for us last year can and should get better. But we, as an overall roster, can certainly get better, too, by adding a key player or two this summer.

My understanding is he said he was OK with adding talent. Which is standard coachspeak like you said.

But he is not gonna say, we need a LWB or some such because that is a dis in Yeboah, Amundsen, and Sands.

Last season, we added Amundsen, Camacho, Cheberko, Gressel, and Rossi in season. And had Schulte replace Room at GK. And shipped Lucas out. I think it is pretty well established both the club & manager are good with adding talent midseason.

The key was he disagreed with the wild notion that he doesn’t like to add new players. Idk why the reporter phrased it that way. Naturally he isn’t going to give away hints about who we may or may not add. The only player we have had the organization confirm we were after was Jarne Steuckers and no guarantee we get him.

Again Matan and his contract status is concerning and these reporters really suck at asking good questions.

Such a dumb question, we literally added a slew of guys in-season last year.

IDK what it will be this year, but we certainly have roster room, a way to buy down Nagbe & open a DP slot, 1 open U22 slot, and, depending on the cap space, potentially add TAM level guys as well.

Asst Coach Patrick (Kwame)Ampadu has a son
Ethan (Kwame Colm Raymond)Ampadu who plays for Leeds United who was recently relegated. I saw this posted on Facebook in the Nordecke discussion group. He is a young CB but I’ve never seen him play. Could he be a potential target ?

Anyone seen him play? We definitely need more CB depth if his skillset fits our playing style.

Ethan is only 23 and already has two seasons as a Serie A starter with Venezia and Spezia and a season as a Premier League starter with Sheffield United prior to this season where he was a starter in the Championship with Leeds.

He would not be coming here to be a depth piece, he would be coming here to play every minute, and we would be paying a pretty penny for him. Leeds payed close to a $10m transfer fee to get him last summer, and he’s currently valued by Transfermarkt at $16m. So he’d be coming here as a DP signing and would probably want to be one of the highest paid defenders in the league, if he were even willing to take such a massive step down so early in his career.

Lol yeah we don’t need a DP CB no thx but hopefully the kid finds a good club for next year. When is he out of contract ? and when teams get relegated they usually sell the high salary guys to save face? I’ve heard players get clauses in contracts to never have to play in that scenario. I had no idea this kid was that big of a investment.

Leeds was not relegated this year.

They just lost the playoff final to Southampton at Wenbly after finishing 3rd in the regular season.

The entire premise here is flawed.

Leeds were relegated in the 2022/23 season. So they made it back up ? Tbh I don’t watch that league very often. I catch occasional games but I don’t follow any teams closely.

No--they were in the promotion playoff final--and lost.

One may recall the that the Crew once played Leeds at Ohio Stadium back in the day.

Your premise was that Leeds just got relegated and therefore they might be looking/needing to offload players, namely a CB.

This is not true. They were not relegated this year. There is no exodus coming at Leeds.

In fact, the reverse is likely true after finishing 3rd and not going up. My guess is they will likely reinforce and spend, believing they have the best squad amongst the remaining Championship clubs, and need to beat out two of relegated EPL teams (Luton, Burnley, Sheffield United) to get auto promoted.

Of course, if they spent over their heads last year & failed, maybe they cannot afford it again. Though Leeds is a pretty big club.

Yeah the guy who brought it up said that in his post. So it isn’t my premise because I asked questions because Of his statement which I clearly stated what he said. But yes they have already been relegated and just didn’t win promotion. I don’t follow English soccer. But I’m suprised a Championship league team has so much invested in a CB. But I’m ignorant to how much 2nd tier teams spend in England compared to the Premier League.

Hopefully the club can get him started with a coaching job in the academy once he’s done playing. We are building a good flow from the academy through to the first team, so the next step is to complete the circle and have former players coaching within the club. That’s a great way to build a continuous club culture that will build roll from season to season and generation to generation.

Whoa, whoa. Maybe we can slow down a little? Is a national "B" license even enough certification to coach professionally, whatever the title is? I don't know. I don't know how it works.

I'd love for CR to stay in the organization post-playing, but is that the usual trajectory as far as coaching goes?

The B license appears to be geared towards overseeing performance training and can be used at either the youth or the senior level. So he could start out as a staffer/unofficial coach in our developmental pipeline after his playing days are over, with some responsibilities for supporting S&C and related training programs. He'd need a higher license and more experience before qualifying for a promotion to assistant coaching.

Nancy holds an Elite Formation Coaching License ( EFCL), which is a program MLS participates in which is held in France and run by some top European clubs. A handful of MLS coaches are graduates.

Some coaches take the UEFA certification courses.

As far as I know holding a. USSF license is not actually a job requirement for an MLS coach, just a resume enhancer.

Part of the University of Cologne is a "sports school" and folks can get their license there (as well as advanced degrees). It's not far from the training facilities for 1 FC Koeln, which is useful.

Does explain the frequent elite formation that the Crew often roll out.
