I understand why PSV would do this. Maybe some other clubs get into the picture. Nobody will sign him at his Barca salary but maybe his agent can develop interest from more clubs as rehab progresses. Challenging situation but could be worse!

  2. Not in theory, but in reality, as Brand said on tv they were negotiating the contract he was going to sign.

I think Jazzy was confused by the way I phrased things and thought they could acquire his Barcelona contract "intact" which would leave him with just a 1 season obligation to PSV. This isn't an uncommon scenario in American sports due to the centralized ownership structure in most leagues, but I believe it's impossible in any soccer league except MLS (where, from FIFA's perspective as the international transfer clearinghouse, all players are signed to one "club" which allows MLS to move player contracts between MLS clubs via "trades" without much friction... this is also why "free agency" is such a tortured concept in MLS).

With our luck, whoever they buy to cover for Dest turns out to be the new Cafú.

That would be best case for Dest, cause PSV would sell the next Cafu for a Sangare money in the blink of an eye, if they thought they could get the "old" Dest back on the cheap.

Back in the day when Rangers had I think 3 Yanks, that would be my first shot in the dark. If it never happened with Rangers I’d bet this is a first.

I’d be a lot more stoked if either player was developed in the US. :(

Just a note, this isn't an actual Best XI selection by anyone. It's the 11 players who accumulated the highest average point total from WhoScored's algorithm over the course of the season, only counting the 1 or 2 players with the highest score for each position.

So if the question is just whether we've ever had multiple players who have been named to any Best XI in a foreign league during a single season, it's definitely happened at least once in the EFL Championship. Maybe even twice.

In the 2021-22 Championship season, Tim Ream was named to the Team of the Year by England's Professional Footballers' Association, while Antonee Robinson was named to the Team of the Year by the English Football League itself. True, they didn't appear in the same list, but both awards are a lot more official than WhoScored's. (I also vaguely recall seeing Best XI lists for the 2005-06 EFL Championship season featuring both Marcus Hahnemann and Bobby Convey, though only Hahenamnn was named to the official PFA list.)

One thing with Xavi getting let go it is possible Dest gets another shot at Barcelona once he recovers.

It’s not as if they can afford to bring in a new right back.

I wonder what Flick thinks of him? Was he the coach at Bayern when Bayern was interested in signing him?

Bayern is the type of team he would fit in (as long as they actually play like Bayern). He adds a definite offensive overload to a team that is often facing bunkers.

who knows whether the environment would’ve given him more confidence but he faced tons of bunkering teams w/ barca and had almost no impact

i’m still baffled but he was so cautious/ineffective at creating chances that he completely fell out of favor

I don’t see him at Bayern. They are hurting defensively and have more than enough players who can play with the ball.

Barca seemed a good fit but they seemed a left handed version of the early US under Berhalter once Xavi took over. Obviously that wasn't a good fit for Dest.
