Y'all will never guess what McTurtle did Mitch McConnell kills bipartisan border bill — 3 hours after speaking in support of ithttps://t.co/wmkyqHfcGj— Raw Story (@RawStory) February 6, 2024
Too much is being made of this (or is going to be made of this). It was dead in the house regardless.
Maybe an educational experience? but I think they’ll find a way to make this into another conspiracy theory… Not that most of them would care but Fox viewers are basically stars in their own Truman Show. https://t.co/jaGNsrE6dJ— L O L G O P (@LOLGOP) February 5, 2024
Someone else can go into more detail about what Greg Abbot said but what is it about states rights and wheelchairs? I'm going to call Greg, George Wallace Jr.
The important outcome, is that Biden and the democrats should go on the offensive telling the MSM and all people willing to listen, that they had, together with the senate GQP, written a bill addressing all the things that the GQP wanted on border security, and the GQP killed it. That's the message.
They should go beyond that. They should note that they worked in good faith with the GOP and came to an agreement, but the GOP then went back on their word and decided that negotiating in good faith was not something they want to do. It might even be said that the GOP is bereft of ideas, but the one they had was how to secure the southern border. And then they backed out, showing that they really don't have any ideas.
Yes, because allowing governors to defy executive and supreme court rules, and saying "Hey, we tried fascism-lite with the GOP and they said no. See! They aren't working in good faith!" is going to sway voters and prevent our continued slide into fascism. Well just continue to allow them to run their own border policy and kill immigrants at increasing rates cause why not? There was one outcome here and Biden and the Democrats meekly walked away from it. Hooray Weimar Republic.
How did Biden and Democrats walk away from a group that rarely negotiates, and when they do, they don't do it in good faith? Seriously, Team Biden has been at the table from the start.
They shouldn't have been at the table to agree to these policies. There's some wild stuff in this bill. Their response should've been to nationalize the guards down there and get rid of the razor wires. If they wanted to "pass" immigration reform, that will never pass ever, might as well pass the best one that covers what the party wants, and not include anything the fascists want, anyway. Energize the base and show them you really want to solve things. Might buy a modicum of good will from a base that is a little disillusioned
He still can do that, after showing that the GQP does not negotiate in good faith. The risk on doing so, is that it can create right wing martyrs and excite the wingnut base for November. I'd say that he will take incremental steps, but anything significant might only happen after the election. I think they are working different targets here. Biden went for the independent and GQP moderates giving them almost every thing they wanted to just fund Ukraine and Israel security. Now that the GQP walked away from the deal, he can go that group and say "how can you vote for those buffoons?" and at least try them to sit out this election. He can then turn around to his base and tell them "It is impossible to work with republicans if we don't have a bigger majority, vote and get me majorities in both chambers so we can pass meaningful reforms".
The GQP has been pulling this stunt for, a decade?, now. It's no surprise to anyone. I don't think he's going to pull a meaningful number of moderates or independents by saying he wants to make the Secretary of HS able to deport folk at a whim, with no oversite, all we need is certain conditions met or the president declaring so. More detention sites. And he certainly isn't getting any kind of republican crossover. That crowd is either for democracy, or for fascism. This isn't going to sway them. The hypocrisy is the point. Now Biden does have a strong disapproval rating amongst his own base. He can take meaningful steps to make sure they don't stay home by throwing a few carrots. He can put together a dream bill and say "This is what I want to do to solve immigration. Look at all this awesome stuff. Get me a majority in both houses and it's done. First bill out of the gate." Giving in to the GQP and complaining about how obstructive they are, all the horrid stuff they want in a bipartisan bill....c'mon. Acquiescence to fascism is never the right answer.
One of the massive positives Biden gets is being bipartisan. Here he is able very clearly show that he was making a very strong effort to work with Republicans, and they flat out refused. Biden: "How can they be a part of government when they are offered what they want, and still decide not to take it?" And we are not his target audience. It is the low information, suburban Whites.
If you ask me, it’s working… BREAKING: The Border Patrol Union President just blasted Donald Trump for being against helping Border Patrol agents close our border. Retweet to ensure the whole country sees this MAGA takedown. pic.twitter.com/xL0BZnL6pI— Biden’s Wins (@BidensWins) February 6, 2024
Is it though? I don't think Mango is going to reverse course over that. When has he ever? Are gop voters going to not vote fascism over that kind of response? They'll pull the red lever whether the Border Union is complaining or not. I'm skeptical that independents and moderates are wowed by this bill or won't vote GOP because they've been so hilariously hypocritical in the House.
My mom’s search for a contractor is a red herring. American businesses definitely need to adjust their business models and profit expectations, or face financial penalties. That is one of the many factors that needs to be addressed.
Wonder if the Trumpiest states also have the fewest foreign-born people In 2022, the foreign-born population was estimated to be 46.2 million people, or almost 14% of the U.S. population, with most states seeing double-digit percentage increases in the last dozen years, according to the figures from the bureau's American Community Survey In California, New Jersey, New York and Florida, foreign-born individuals comprised more than 20% of each state’s population. They constituted 1.8% of West Virginia's population, the smallest rate in the U.S. https://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/wireStory/half-foreign-born-people-us-live-4-states-109051109
The speed in which America is able to integrate Immigrants and get them to start thinking like 'real' Americans is unbelievable. he crossed the border illegally and immediately started expressing concerns about border security. legendary assimilation speedrun. https://t.co/5DSlsVeRkc— pagliacci the hated 🌝 (@Slatzism) May 23, 2024
Could be a Democratic Failure to but since it's immigration related: https://www.instagram.com/p/C7zo0sfpMG_/?igsh=MTFxb2l6am53Zm56eA==&img_index=1 From CNN: "The Biden administration is quickly invoking an authority to shut off access to asylum for migrants who cross the US-Mexico border illegally, senior officials said Tuesday, a significant attempt by President Joe Biden to address head on one of his biggest political vulnerabilities. Biden unveiled the sweeping executive action Tuesday afternoon at the White House, attempting to use executive action to affect the situation on the border after a bipartisan measure failed earlier this year. The action marks the administration’s most dramatic move on the US southern border as Biden tries to gain the upper hand on immigration just weeks from the first presidential debate – by using the same authority former President Donald Trump tried to use in office." Stop acquiescing to the fascists on immigration. It's not going to help.
Do you object to the actual policy, or just that he’s giving GOPs a win? We talked about this in the Biden thread.
Limiting access to asylum is the problem and this doesn't help address that. Linking it to the number of interactions agents have doesn't follow in my mind. Iiuc, this will prevent anyone from accessing asylum for some time as the number of interactions is likely to remain high for the foreseeable future. It doesn't solve anything except to look tough for...someone? Who is this designed to win over? Republicans? Please. Shore up the base who has serious problems with him? Nope. Moderates? How? If you're trying to band aid up the border, I fail to see how this helps. It makes life harder for everyone and doesn't solve anything. I suppose eventually they'll clear the backlog in a few years this way while no one can apply. But then? Given everything going on, no one will still be able to apply until the order is rescinded. And I don't like this idea, personally, of continuing the stuff Oh Convicted One did.
I also fail to see how we can possibly continue with the current asylum policy without a huge legislative effort to fund&expand the border checkpoints and immigration court system. It is terribly broken. The GOP refuses to actually do anything to fix the problem, because it being a crisis is a political winner for them. What is Biden to do? I know things are dire for many people right now, but is there no other less-risky journey they can take or country they can find at least temporary refuge in? And yes, we should be taking in 1,000s/day. But when a law-abiding Canadian has to wait 20years to get citizenship, it’s a bit much to ask that same system to process so many asylum seekers.
The US beating Pakistan at cricket: how did it happen? Immigration! https://reason.com/2024/06/10/immigration-fueled-americas-stunning-cricket-upset-over-pakistan/ But we shouldn't be oblivious about why the result was possible. It's because of immigration. As The Indian Express points out, at least six players on the American team are of Indian descent, including several who are in the U.S. on work visas and who play on the national team essentially as a hobby. That includes Saurabh Netravalkar, who bowled (the equivalent of pitching) the final inning for the American team. He moved from Mumbia to San Francisco when he was a student. Now he's an engineer at Oracle. Monank Patel, who scored 50 runs in the game, moved to New Jersey from India in 2016 to start a restaurant. Nosthush Kenjige, who recorded three wickets (the equivalent of strikeouts), had been born in Alabama before moving to India and then returning to the U.S. to work as a biologist. Other players on the team were born in Canada, while some others (such as Kenjige) were native-born American children of Indian immigrants. The rest of the Express article is worth your time to read, if only to appreciate the depth of the cross-cultural story behind the Americans' incredible upset. Saurabh, for example, had not even brought his cricket cleats to America when he moved here from India, believing that his cricket-playing days were behind him. Now he's the star and cricket is growing in U.S. popularity—particularly, and not surprisingly, in places with large numbers of South Asian immigrants. The article in the link is pretty good.
