NFL RedZone. Often imitiated. Never duplicated. This is part of the reason why it works for NFL, but not so much other sports. At 1pm, there's anywhere from 6-9 games going on. Remove the games that are at commercial or at the defensive end of the field and there's still 2-3 games that are potentially exciting. In MLS, maybe you have five games at 7:30pm and another two at 8:30pm. How many of those games will be at halftime before the 8:30 games kick off? How many of them will be at VAR, an injury situation or at the other end of the field doing a free kick? Yeah, things can turn on a dime, but it doesn't work as good. As said, there's just one announcer in the studio (nerd alert: It's actually a green screen) and he doesn't talk much over the regular announcers at the game other than to bring viewers up to speed. "Let's go to Chiefs at Jaguars where such-and-such 40-yd run just happened to put the Chiefs in scoring position." Yeah, there's a lot more highlights and studio stuff in the second window when there's fewer games. Where NFL RedZone also shines is when the early games are at halftime. Because of the nature of timeouts and all, even with a minimum of six games, there's at least 1-2 games that aren't at halftime. One game might have 13:52 left in the third quarter with another game having 1:38 left before halftime. Their kickoff montage is also fun. "Let's see how many kickoffs we can show live starting just after 1pm." I saw an interview with Chris Hanson on what happens after they sign off. The ear piece immediately comes out, he does a semi-collapse on the desk to catch his breath...then he goes home to this massive TV setup. The main TV goes on NBC and then he's got four TVs at the corners of the big TV. Those TVs go on NFL Network and ESPN where he watches highlights of things aired during RedZone. ESPN had an NCAA version for a few years. It was weird not only because of commercials but because they couldn't get the rights to every game. Often imitiated. Never duplicated. Maybe I should give MLS 360 another chance.
MLS 360 should and can work… just get rid of the three clowns. Hell, just put Matt Doyle in there instead, now you only need two more.
Re: Caleb Porter Now there is a report he is avoiding meetings with Jonathan Kraft (co-owner) and had more fights with players after their last game: including with Carles Gil, Mark Anthony Kaye, and Nick Lima (for the second week in a row). Lima didn’t shake his hand when coming off, and Porter yelled at him in the tunnel post game, “never disregard my fvcking hand shake again”! LOL. Looks like 3 seasons in a row with no playoffs for Caleb. At this rate, he might not even make it to the all-star break.
5/18/2024 New England hosted DC United. New England got a red card in the 14th. Philly scored on the 38th, 47th and 80th "It's just an impossible task to go that long down a man" -- Caleb Porter postgame. Let's go back to 5/19/2001: 1 : 0 Brian McBride 25. Columbus Crew red card 59th Columbus Crew red card 67th. 1 : 1 Santino Quaranta 69. 2 : 1 Jeff Cunningham 99. Columbus comes back to win after being tied and down two players. "Impossible? Well, that's just like, your opinion, man." -- The Dude X Wilfried Nancy. I bet there's even better examples, but the summary of that game reminded of the 5/19/01 game.
Let me just ask: When is the last time you heard about a coach getting in angry arguments with players on the field, at practice and in the locker room, (where players were reportedly also arguing with each other) getting snotty and nasty with reporters, snubbing the owner and blaming his players, the refs and the league for the fact that his team - which on paper is just not that bad - is sinking like a rock, and then everything suddenly turned around and was a big success? Every single time you hear that story it winds up rather quickly with a coach out of a job. I have very little respect for the Kraft family and particularly sonny boy (who the fans used to call Uday) but no owner in any sport can let that crap go on. They just can't. It damages the team's image and makes the owner look like a weak idiot. I would imagine it's going to cost them a pretty penny to fire him but how in the world can they let this go on?
Speaking of messi not being at games 🚨⚽️🐐BREAKING: Messi, Suarez, Busquets did not travel to Vancouver for Inter Miami game Saturday. Not injured, taking game off to rest, confirmed by league sources. Sellout crowd of 55,000 was expected. Story to come. @MiamiHerald @HeraldSports #Messi #InterMiami #VWFC #MLS— Michelle Kaufman (@kaufsports) May 24, 2024 It is the furthest any team has ever traveled for a game. Vancouver's owner has talked about putting grass in permanently, but that wouldn't have saved them.
Nobody wants to play on turf , on a weeks rest choosing not to play ? Good thing they didn’t temporarily get grass just to lure him to play.
True enough. But they play Wednesday at home and that is a ling trip back for the old folks. Hopefully they drop points and Toronto does us a favor vs Cincy. Still, I'd love a win vs Orlando, but coming through healthy with our key guys free of knocks is the #1 priority. Though nothing we can do, short of resting our entire best XI, could guarantee it.
Colombia announces preliminary roster: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5516200/2024/05/23/colombia-copa-america-2024-squad/ I am not a subscriber, but it looked to me like the article never listed the actual roster (way to go media!). James Rodriguez in. Listed the EPL guys in. No word on Cucho.
In Spanish, no Cucho: https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/es/ne...-colombia-copa-america-2024-jugadores-citados
Yeah watched the very end of it the. The highlights only disappointing part of the night. Hopefully Miami gets beat.
Wow. Dallas, at home, got a couple goals off of goalkeeping howlers en route to a 3-0 lead against RSL. RSL came all the way back to get a 3-3 draw, getting their third goal literally at the death.
Interesting. This is a 14-match day for MLS. Ten matches are completed. In those ten, there were five draws, and the home teams lost the other five. In the four remaining matches at the half, three are tied and the home team is losing the fourth. There's a real possibility that we may have a maximum-fixture matchday where all the home sides fail to win. I wonder what kind of odds you could have gotten on that. I'd also like to know if that's happened before.
Well, once again, the LA Galaxy keep MLS fans from having nice things. They hold on to win at home. Portland did also, but that was old news at that point. 14 games, only two home wins today.
Plus, Miami left everyone at home to "rest" and they beat Vancouver anyway. The Caps should really consider joining the Canadian "Premier League" instead of wasting everyone's time with their cheap, ugly artificial turf pointyball stadium and shitty team. And in news of the ridiculous, Caleb Porter is still employed despite another desultory loss. No reports of locker room fistfights but give it time. NE is the odds on favorite for the spoon, which is not what Hand Job Bob is paying him for. Meanwhile, Brad Guzan got sent off for a ridiculous assault on a charging forward. Time for Shrek to go play with his grandchildren. Cincy lost five starters from last year's shield winner, and they just won their seventh straight despite starting two 19 year olds up front. Noonan knows what he's doing. The two best coaches in MLS work in Ohio; convince me that I'm wrong.
They lost some good players and I hoped they would fall apart but they made good moves to replace those starters. Luca Orellano is one of them. Just at a glance : Key Departures Santiago Arias: 2G & 1A Arias, Cincy's starting right wingback in 2023, signed for Brazilian top-flight side Bahia this winter. It was a short, but memorable stay for the Colombian international. Junior Moreno: 4G & 2A The Venezuelan international midfielder was out of contract, then signed for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem. Moreno, combined with a DC stretch, played in 153 MLS matches. Yerson Mosquera: 2G & 1A After a successful season-long loan to Cincy, the Colombian international center back returned to Premier League side Wolves. He's now on another loan at LaLiga side Villarreal. Brandon Vazquez: 8G & 2A European-centric transfer speculation shifted into Vazquez joining Liga MX powerhouse side Monterrey for a reported $7.5 million with $1 million in add-ons and a sell-on clause. The USMNT striker had 26g/12a in 62 matches (2yrs) Álvaro Barrio started regularly had 5G & 6asst Dominic Badji 5G& 3A Also Boupenza has been injured and is not currently contributing and rumors swirling he may never play again for FCC ADDITIONS: Kevin Kelsey u22 on loan with option to buy looks promising Corey Baird a glue guy solid veteran Pavel Bucha - is he better than Moreno or just a better fit in the midfield? Or is he a weak link?? Luca Orellano who is on fire Miles Robinson- we all know he was good but will he stay healthy? Fact is they aren’t going to fall off and our Rivals are serious competition as they seem to also have a great Coach and FO. Should make a lot of fun Hell is Real match ups as we should battle for supremacy!!! Miami appears to make the East a 3 headed monster but as soon as Messi leaves it could all come crashing down. But they do have a lot of young talent behind the old guys.
I hadn't thought about it, but Miami-to-Vancouver is almost seven hours in the air. So 14 hours round trip to stuff some older players in an aluminum tube to go play on a crappy turf pitch. "Rest" my ass. Thats a ridiculous road trip. Ufff, I mean was it worth? #mls #intermiami #whitecaps #messi pic.twitter.com/zH2Yhr2Da6— Hermanos F.C. (@HermanosFChat) May 26, 2024
They won so Miami looks brilliant, it’s a long season and they are trying to win everything so they have to pick and choose wisely when to not play Messi and some of the other older guys. They are already hit by the injury bug and playing on that turf seems like a bad idea. I hope Messi plays vrs Columbus so when we win it’s more of a achievement. But if they chose not to play him we better win. They already got the best of us last year with a bad team. I find it comical that ppl complain about Messi not playing or any player for that matter. You would think winning is more important than the other teams star player. It’s just weird to me.
Messi transcends sport. He is the GOAT, and having a chance to say you saw the GOAT play live, is vastly more important to most people that getting 3 points in a long season.
