Good point. Although I remember seeing an early-20th century British textbook which included the region in the "Middle East" just a few years prior to WW I.
That's because even back then Texas controlled what was published in textbooks not just in the US but across the English speaking world.
@Auriaprottu ...Well hot diggity dog my other grandaughter [15 yrs old] plays in a jazz band. I realize they are secondary instruments but she plays the flute and piccolo. I'm pumped!
Video game music, starting with Final Fantasy. Middle school to college I played the very first all the way to XII and just tuned out. The best run though, has to be FF6 through X. Great characters, visuals, story, and of course music. FF7's might be the most popular but I was always fond of FF8's. FF9's was great too. I think I need to play them all again when winter hits. They're great games but are huge time sinks. In no order but: FF9, FF8 x3, and FF7.
Video game music 2: Silent Hill 2. Japanese horror, disembodied figures, a monstrous figure, and atmospheric music. I may have used this soundtrack on Halloween to add atmosphere for the trick or treaters. The Darkness that Lurks in your mind, the 2nd link, is quite possibly one of the most unsettling songs I've heard. I also went as one of the creatures, Pyramid Head for Halloween. Whose first appearance is disturbing to say the least.
I'll see if I can get her to send me a recording. I'll forward it and you will listen and you will applaud profusely!
Power outage in half the town ATM. Not sure what happened. I love vidgame tracks, and will post faves as soon as we get power back, or after I wake up if I fall asleep waiting.
For the purpose of this post, I'm including songs that were not written specifically for the game, because I haven't ever heard the songs on the radio or in a restaurant. I don't think I've posted this first one before. Kind of a Duran Duran/Human League thing to my ears. This next one I've posted four or five times. It is far and away my favorite videogame tune ever, yet largely outside my wheelhouse. Probably heard this one around 2001. I've posted it twice, I think. This whole GT series is full of cool music, much of it dedicated to electric bass.
Cool parts from about 00:50-01:30. Definitely NFL Films influenced. The greatest single player multiplayer I ever played. Create eight sims, divide them into as few as two or as many as nine teams, create their game-relevant personalities, and you can control the ones on your team. I literally keep an N64 around for this one game.
Madness put on a great show in Oakland last night (where they play again tonight), definitely worth checking out if you can swing it.
Remembering what it was like to put the leather to guys in street fights on Broadway in the roaring twenties-- "Little Isadore taught me this one! Now let me tell you the one about Big False Face and the brakeman's beautiful daughter!"
I got invited to join the group at the local market cafe Sunday afternoon. I know it doesn't sound much but it's kinda fun and pleasing for an old fart to be asked to join in. 5 other guitars there 2 of us played rhythm on acoustics the others were electric. My saving grace is using my tablet with the songbookpro ap. That seems to be the norm now a $7 one time cost. The ap not the tablet Most all had one. Someone calls a title and artist. Punch it in and it pops right up chords, breaks an all. Don't like the key, simply choose what you want. The chooser leads the singing. This was one of my choices. Got to say we had a brilliant electric violin player. Her husband is the leader and drummer. So this went down well with an appreciating clientele. Just a fun 4 hours out for an old retiree.
I recently discovered the Viagra Boys, a Swedish band with an American singer, Sebastian Murphy (from Marin, moved to Sweden when he was 17), and now I'm thinking I need to find a ticket for this sold-out show in Golden Gate Park, in August.
Yeah, really. Another from that era and style was. Horse with no name. Didn’t like it at first but I got used to the lyrics
