For our Desantis living friend, proof 12,376 that Ron is a fascist who is engaging in genocide against LGBT population:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/05/21/florida-bridges-rainbow-lights-pride/

“As Floridians prepare for Freedom Summer, Florida's bridges will follow suit, illuminating in red, white, and blue from Memorial Day through Labor Day!” he wrote. “Thanks to the leadership of Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida continues to be the freest state in the nation.”

    Early stages?

Every genocide starts with a public campaign to "other" the targeted community. And I don't think it's a stretch to believe that DeSantis and his allies are doing so deliberately.

You know what? I'm not even gonna hate on this, aside from the hypocrisy. There's nothing like a conservative woman with a fetish or two. I mean that.

Of course the original Freedom Summer started in June 1964 when college students went to Mississippi to register African-Americans to vote.

Trolling is a feature, not a bug, of fascism.

But trolling takes a minimum level of knowledge and I doubt DeSantis knows enough about anything outside of the law to know about Freedom Summer.

It works on multiple levels. For Desantis and right wing people who don't study history, "Freedom Summer" sounds great. For anyone who does know history and knows about Freedom Summer from the Civil Rights era, it's spitting in their woke faces.

    Hmmmm.

Since the core of his brand of fascism is about othering everyone who isn’t for him, how do you distinguish between him othering LGBTQ and him othering school teachers and librarians? I don’t think anyone believes DeSantis is preparing an anti teacher genocide, so how do we distinguish between them?

I hope to live long enough that the kind of discussion we’re having now will be as academic as it 30 years ago.

Dude went to Harvard. He’s like Senator Goober from Louisiana. They’re imitators.

You do realize that the entire attack on school teachers and librarians was focused very explicitly on LGBT+ people and issues, right? You do remember the "Don't Say Gay" bill, right?

Jobs generally don't fall under the groups identified under genocide. That said, I think it was Pol Pot maybe, where teachers, professors, and people with glasses were jailed and killed in an anti-West purge.

And it's pretty clear Ron wants to get rid of everyone in the LGBT community. This is just another way to turn them invisible, which as you know, SD, is a way to make it easier to engage in violence against them. How exactly that manifests we can't know now.

Could be he forces all trans kids into the closet and makes it impossible for them to access any care and the suicide rate sky rockets, thus killing huge swaths of the population. Or by forcing them out of the state by denying services, public and private. Or by jailing the population for "crimes" re what Paxton wants to do in Texas.

What about some of his advisors? Would at least one of them know about it?

Yale! He went to Yale, although it should be Jail... Doesn't anyone remember that video of his where he bragged about being on the Yale baseball team? And he also boasted about being "a JAG-Off(icer)."

What @Sounders78 said answers the question in part at least.

I would expand that to point out that any genocide or 'mere' campaign of targeted harassment/persecution of LGBT+ people here is part of a larger authoritarian project rather than the entire point of the enterprise. Targeting librarians and teachers--i.e., trying to destroy public libraries and public schools as functional institutions--is crucial to dismantling pluralistic, liberal democracy in order to pave the way for an authoritarian state capable of, among other things, systemically attacking/destroying the LGBT+ community.

    You and me both.

I don’t live in Florida so maybe it’s playing differently there, but I’m also thinking of Chris Rufo and Ben Sasse. I’m thinking about the COVID experts and the nutball surgeon general or whatever they call it at the state level. I’m thinking of his policies on charter schools.

As always, you are being reactionary, waiting for something to happen, while the rest of us are seeing the warning signs and pointing out the potential.

If you do, it won't be from anything you said or did.

Being a pessimist leads to just as many wrong conclusions as optimism. The former just feel cooler.

The policies on charter schools are a part of the attacks on LGBT+, which results from science-based education. Get rid of public schools and you get rid of secular science-based education. Charter schools and private schools can teach religiously understood doctrine, not actual science-based information. LGBT+ can be outright oppressed and discriminated against. The understanding that we are born this way can be removed from the textbooks and curriculum, with all the ramifications that entails. It's just one aspect of the attack.

The goal is obvious to anyone who pays attention, given they are very explicit about it - and have been since the early 1960s.

Let me be even clearer for Dave - gay people threaten conservative Christianity like no other group. If being gay is inborn and natural, then their understanding of the Bible and God completely falls apart. How they interpret Romans 1 is based on homosexuality being a choice. If it isn't a choice, their interpretation of Romans 1 is wrong. Their understanding of "biblical inerrancy" is wrong. Their understanding of God is wrong.

All that might not be a problem for you, given your beliefs are heretical to them, but it is a big issue for them - their entire faith relies on it. If being gay is not a choice, is not inherently immoral and is a natural state of being, then their faith is wrong. That is why they fight us with such venom.

    Again, reactionary.

And death is not something one can recover from. Mistaken policies are.
