Tatsuki Mizuno's two-run home run in the 5th inning ultimately turned out to be the game-winning hit as the Nippon-Ham Fighters recorded a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Orix Buffaloes at Es Con Field Hokkaido. Sachiya Yamasaki, who joined the Fighters this season after spending his first nine seasons with the Buffaloes, pitched 5-1/3 innings to earn his fifth win of the season. Orix first baseman Ryo Ota provided all of his team's runs with three RBIs including a two-run single that gave the Buffaloes a 2nd inning lead. Last year Chusei Mannami had a breakout season, not only at the plate with his .321 batting average and 25 home runs, but also in right field where his impressive cannon right arm gunned down no fewer than five runners attempting to advance to third base or score at home plate. On Tuesday he added to his another notch to his belt in the 2nd inning when his laser throw nailed Masahiro Nishino while trying to add to Orix's 3-0 lead. For me, the 24 year old Mannami has the best outfield arm in the game today, possibly the best I've ever seen. The velocity and accuracy of his throws are amazing. It was one-sided almost from the start. The SoftBank Hawks scored seven runs in the 2nd inning and ten more in the 4th. 12 of their 23 hits were extra base hits that included five doubles, four triples (Kenta Imamiya laced two triples in the 4th inning) and three home runs. Ryoya Kurihara went 4-for-6 at the plate including two home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored. A solo homer by pinch hitter Takashi Umino was his first jack of the year and completed the scoring for the day. Rakuten Eagles starting pitcher Cody Ponce went just 3-plus innings allowing 12 earned runs off 11 hits, one walk and one hit batsman. This marks the second time that the Eagles allowed at least 20 runs while being shutout in a game, an NPB first. On 27 May 2005 - the second game of their existence - they registered just one base hit while losing 26-0 to the Lotte Marines. Anthony Kay pitched 8 shutout innings in helping the Yokohama DeNA BayStars blank the Yakult Swallows 7-0 at Meiji Jingu Stadium in Tokyo. Kay, in his first season in Japan following a five-year stint in MLB, had his best outing as a professional allowing just four hits and one walk while fanning eight batters to pick up his second win of the year. Keita Sano and Toshiro Miyazaki each homered to help lead the offense.

Orlando Calixte's two-RBI double in the 6th inning overturned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead as the Chunichi Dragons defeated the Yomiuri Giants 4-2 at the Tokyo Dome. Dragons starting pitcher Shinnosuke Ogasawara went 6 innings to earn his second win of the year while closer Raidel Martinez set down the Giants in order for save number 13. Yomiuri's Hayato Sakamoto continued his climb up the record books after going 4-for-4 with the bat, the 188th modasho of his career which ranks third on the all-time list. Sakamoto's assault on the baseball included his 450th double which breaks a tie with Yutaka Fukumoto and places him second on the NPB all-time list. Current Dragons manager Kazuyoshi Tatsunami is the all-time leader in doubles with 487. Another 35 year old Kyojin, two-time MVP Yoshihiro Maru, opened the bottom of the 1st inning with the 11th first-inning leadoff bomb of his career. Atsuki Taneichi tossed his first complete game since 2020 in helping the Lotte Marines to a 2-1 win over the Seibu Lions. Taneichi struck out eight batters while allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk in overpowering the Lions. Akito Takabe led the Marines offense going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Lotte are unbeaten in their last seven games (which includes two ties) while Seibu lost its seventh in a row. The Lions have now lost all eight games they have played against the Marines

Only three games were scheduled for Thursday. Kenta Ishida pitched 7 innings and earned his first win of the year in the Yokohama DeNA BayStars 5-3 victory over the Yakult Swallows at Meiji Jingu. Tyler Austin drove in three runs including a solo round-tripper to lead off the 4th inning. Domingo Santana also hit a modasho which included his sixth homer of the season. And Munetaka Murakami also went yard for the Swallows, his league-leading 11th on the year. The Hanshin Tigers took the weeknight series against the Hiroshima Carp two games to one following another 2-1 win at Mazda Zoom Zoom Stadium. Yusuke Ohyama and Shota Morishita drove in the two runs for Hanshin. Morishita's sacrifice fly in the 7th brought home Koji Chikamoto who went a modasho 3-for-5 on the night. The Carp had runners at the corners with one out in the last of the 9th but pinch hitter Ryuhei Matsuyama grounded to Takumu Nakano who began a nice 4-6-3 double play to end the contest. The Orix Buffaloes salvaged the third game of their series with the Nippon-Ham Fighters by scoring three runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 9-3 win. Tomoya Mori led the Buffaloes attack with two RBIs and a run scored while Ryoma Nishikawa also contributed two RBIs for the visitors. Cuban player Ariel Martinez hit his fifth home run of the year for the Fighters in a losing cause.
The Tokyo Dome will once again be one of the venues for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. IMO, a big opportunity missed to showcase the excellent ES Con Hokkaido Field in Kitahiroshima (home of the Nippon-Ham Fighters).

“I noticed after the sixth inning. I thought, ‘9 more outs. I wonder if I can really do this?’" 24 year old Shosei Togo of the Yomiuri Giants pitched the first no-hitter of the 2024 season, facing just two batters over the minimum in a dominating performance that led to a 1-0 victory over the Hanshin Tigers Friday night at Koshien Stadium. Togo, who threw 123 pitches on the night, got a scare in the 9th inning when he walked Seiya Kinami to lead off the inning, the only walk he surrendered throughout the game. Pinch hitter Ryuhei Obata sacrificed pinch runner Kai Ueda to second, then Koji Chikamoto shot a line drive that went directly to first baseman Kazuma Okamoto that left the crowd buzzing. Togo finally struck out his WBC Samurai Japan teammate Takumu Nakano to complete the 17th 'official' no hit, no run gem in Tokyo Giants history. It's also the first no-hitter by a Giants pitcher at Koshien Stadium since 1936 by Eiji Sawamura, the player for whom the annual pitching award is named after. Hanshin's two other base runners came via fielding errors, the first one by Togo himself as his bad throw allowed his opposite number, Masaki Oyokawa, to safely reach first base in the 3rd inning. The game's all-important run came in the 5th inning when Yuta Izuguchi's single to left field scored Louis Okoye from second base. Most eyes likely missed a majority of Togo's performance as they were focused on Roki Sasaki. The right-handed flame thrower had a rough first inning but settled to earn his fourth win of the year as the Chiba Lotte Marines defeated care of the SoftBank Hawks 3-1 at ZOZO Marine Stadium. The big bats of the Hawks jumped on Sasaki early, producing one run on three hits in the opening frame to take an early lead. But Sasaki's fastball was on form, hitting at least 160 kmh on nine occasions and topping out at 162. Over 7 innings he allowed just the one run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight. He tossed 119 pitches total. Hiromi Oka led the Marines offense with an RBI and run scored.

Takayuki Katoh threw his second complete game shutout of the season in helping the Nippon=Ham Fighters overwhelm the Rakuten Eagles 5-0 Saturday afternoon in Sendai. Katoh tossed just 101 pitches allowing just four hits with no walks during his stellar outing. Defensive help came in the form of two double plays turned by the Fighters infield which allowed Katoh to only face two batters over the minimum 27. Go Matsumoto and Chusei Mannami drove in the two runs in the 4th inning which were more than enough for Katoh to earn his third win on the year. A solo home run in the 2nd inning by Alex Dickerson was the only scoring in Nagoya where the Chunichi Dragons held on for a 1-0 win over the Yakult Swallows . After playing on Opening Day on March 29 Dickerson complained about back pain during batting practice the following day and had been out of action until Friday night when he returned to the lineup. On Saturday he connected on a 1-0 change up from Miguel Yajure and parked the ball into the right field bleachers for his long awaited first homer in Japan and the game's only run. Humberto Mejía pitched 7 innings allowing just three hits and one walk to earn his third win on the year.

The Lotte Marines scored five runs in the bottom of the 8th inning en route to a 7-1 victory over the SoftBank Hawks to sweep their weekend series in Chiba. The Marines are now riding a 10 game unbeaten run (8 wins, 2 ties) that dates back to May 14. After putting up 33 runs in two games against the Rakuten Eagles earlier this week, the SoftBank offense was put on hold as they only scored 2 runs over the three-game series played at ZOZO Marines Stadium. It was collective eight-man effort by the Lotte pitching staff that allowed just five hits to a Hawks team that leads the whole of NPB in both batting average and home runs. Coming into the series the Pacific League-leading Hawks had a run differential of +105 but were outscored 12-2 over the weekend. 35 year old Neftali Soto led the Marines on the day with four RBIs which included a two-RBI double in the high scoring 8th. SoftBank still sits atop the P.L. standings with a 5 game lead over the second-place Marines. Late rallies in the 9th and 10th innings gave the Yomiuri Giants a come-from-behind- 2-1 win over the Hanshin Tigers to give the Kyojin the weekend series two games to one. Kazuma Okamoto's 9th inning home run, his eighth of the year, sent the game into an extra frame where Yoshihiro Maru's two-out sacrifice fly to centerfield scored pinch runner Shinnosuke Shigenobu with the game winning run. The defeat reduces the Tigers lead at the top of the Central League to just half-a-game ahead of the Hiroshima Carp.

Beginning on Tuesday 28 May one of the most anticipated segments of the NPB season will begin. Interleague play - which has teams from the Central League and Pacific League playing against each other - will be taking place over the next three weeks. A total of 108 games are scheduled and will conclude on Sunday 16 June. While MLB began Interleague games during the 1997 regular season, NPB did not follow until 2005. Until then, Central League teams were hesitant on the idea due to the prospect of losing revenue in games against the two most popular teams in Japan, the Hanshin Tigers and, especially, the Yomiuri Giants. But Interleague play was ultimately approved due to three key circumstances that arose during the 2004 season: - Two Pacific League clubs - the Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes and the Orix BlueWave from Kobe - announced that they would merge into one team (Orix Buffaloes) after the season concluded. - Rumors of two other Pacific League teams - the Chiba Lotte Marines and Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks - possibly merging to form one team. - With the prospect of the Pacific League being reduced to four teams, talk surfaced of combining the two leagues into one 10-team league (which KBO currently has). In the end, it was decided that the two-league system would remain with Interleague games being played beginning in 2005. And with the Marines and Hawks abandoning the idea of a merger, a new club would be formed and join the Pacific League in 2005. Thus, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles based in Sendai became the first expansion team in NPB since the Takahashi Unions in 1954. This year's Interleague format follows the pattern that has been in use since 2015: Each team will play a 3-game series against each of the six teams from the 'other' league. That's 18 games for each club. 108 games overall. Home field between the teams alternates each year. For example, in 2023 the Hanshin Tigers hosted the 3-game series against the SoftBank Hawks at Koshien Stadium, so this year the two teams will play in Fukuoka. Pitchers will bat in games hosted by Central League teams while the DH will be used in games played in Pacific League stadiums. Sponsored by Nippon Life Insurance, a separate Interleague standings table is kept during play, resulting in an Interleague champion after all 108 games have been played. If there are any postponements due to weather, etc., those games must be played by Thursday 20 June in order to still count in the Interleague standings. Any postponed games not made up by 20 June will eventually be played later in the season but will have no bearing on who wins the Interleague title. The Pacific League has dominated Interleague play over the years, winning the season series 15 times compared to the Central League's 3. In total, Pacific League teams have won 1,253 games, Central League clubs have won 1,122, and 73 games have ended in ties. The SoftBank Hawks have also dominated the 'tournament' winning the Interleague title 8 times. The Lotte Marines, Yomiuri Giants, Orix Buffaloes and Yakult Swallows have each won it twice. The Nippon-Ham Fighters and defending champion Yokohama DeNA BayStars round out the list of past winners. An Interleague MVP will also be named.as will "Outstanding players", one from each league. Yuki Yanagita of the SoftBank Hawks is the only two-time Interleague MVP winner.
