I'm torn, I kinda agree w/you from the stand point that there was footage of him playing brilliantly last June and this past march and it meant ---- all. Otoh, if we do anything at all at Copa, we will play Uruguay AND either Brazil or Colombia, if he plays well in those matches, its hard to see the Big 5 league environment yawning when he looks like he belongs against multiple top 5-15 sides in the world. The problem as another poster mentioned is his wage/asking price. He's being put on the market as a 20 mill buy when he hasn't done a thing in club soccer worthy of note in three years. How on earth do they get 20 mill for him? They don't, I think the best situation is some club is willing to offer 12-15 and a bigger sell on than usual. It's that or a loan.
he was in the 18 and they pay the travel costs etc. to have him sit on the bench ... I just don't see why they did not just tell him to skip the trip - pack his stuff and get his lease in Dortmund back in order and thanks for helping the Forest key players. No point to be with the club anymore ... that is why I said it is like an insult - there was zero percent chance he was going to play - and could have been injured in warm ups. Unless the only point in all of this is Nuno wanted bench meat to keep his starters on notice? That is a heck of a price to pay (loan wages) just to keep the starters motivated. I get that his agent screwed up - but one would think Nuno and the owner would have been on the same sheet of music from the moment Gio joined them ... what a colossal mistake for all involved. I don't know of anyone that made out here - except perhaps BVB got some loan wages for Gio. This helps show just how much money the EPL has. Superdave corrected me that this is a 2 year slot of time to think about and not one year wait for a free transfer. I do wonder if Cole Campbell will pass Gio in the BVB pecking order at this point (although that is forward versus AM) .... [NT talk deleted]
Gio became less relevant in Dortmund due to his injury issues… NOT because of a lack of ability. If he can stay healthy his trajectory at Dortmund or somewhere else will be fine. NF loan was stupid and almost everyone could see it coming. The fact that he stayed relatively healthy should be seen as a positive.
I never said it would be meaningless. It's just not that important for someone like him. He's a known quantity. Clubs know he can play. Probably the best thing that could happen is for him to smile when he interacts with his teammates and coaches while on national team duty and stay healthy. His health and his people skills are, fair or not, the biggest question marks other clubs will see.
He didn’t say it would be meaningless he said it wouldn’t influence many people. You exaggerated his argument to, win or something.
I don't see what him having some friends has to do with my statement. My wife thinks I'm great. My limited number of friends think I'm great. Most everyone else thinks I'm an asshole. Gio only needs to Google his name and he will see why clubs may worry about whether or not he's liked by his manager and teammates.
Normally I'd agree but we don't even know which club team he'll be playing for next year. The national may be his ticket to a better situation.
I completely agree. It is practically impossible to divorce one from the other. Big showings this summer may well affect multiple players on the national team and their final destination.
Here’s the solution to the problem https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/g...eam-discussion.2108471/page-272#post-42222842
We go over this all the time in YA. While we do try to recognize the legitimate overlaps between club and NT as they arise, discussion of a player's NT selections or lack thereof, performance in NT matches, relationships with USMNT coaches, per se are always out of bounds. That's because those conversations take over the YA thread completely and, thereby, make discussion of club careers difficult-to-impossible. Given that a) YA exists specifically to focus on players' club careers and b) the stuff I'm asking you not to discuss here is formally welcomed and supported in the USA Men and US Men News and Analysis forums as part of those forums' core mission, I see no reason to change YA policy in response to this particular moment in Gio's club career. Honestly, do we need yet another thread dominated by guys trying to win the internet by utterly crushing each others' statements about Gregg Berhalter?
My 2¢ is that Gio just needs to get back to work at BvB and do what is asked. I don't think BvB have given up on him whether as someone that has a future at Dortmund or as a profitable transfer. Both parties have an interest in him progressing.
Use your words dude - no one can read your mind. I personally think FCT is exaggerating - a great showing on the international stage could result in decent offers. Many talented players are also head cases and petulant. Reyna’s biggest problem is lack of meaningful production when he’s gotten minutes of late.
Not hard to follow the Mods instructions and refrain from usmnt discussion in the YA threads. The pushback is juvenile.
I asked for evidence to support a statement about how clubs regard Gio. His response indicated he had none to offer. The meaning of my rejoinder to that seems clear. But I am happy to clarify. I asked for evidence because I suspected he had none.
This is to go against the narrative that Gio is somehow lazy or attitudinal at Forest and that caused him not to play. "He has been training well and is a lovely kid, but the team was in a tough cycle, fighting against relegation and the manager has prioritized playing players with Premier League experience already," a source close to the club told ESPN. From ESPN.com Article 'Reyna's spell with Forest has been a failure. What next?'
With Reus gone (BTW where is he going?) he does have a chance. Injuries could result in getting games as a starter and they will have CL minutes again too. He would have to watch behind him as they always have young attackers on the way up. I'm hoping his recent wakeup in learning he has to play much better defense with NF and the US results in him showing that at Dortmund at that being the missing piece of why he wasn't playing much.
I remember when his dad played, he would get crapped on for not moving fast enough. At the time,I argued that he read the game well enough that his lack of foot speed didn't matter,he knew where to go and didn't have to hurry to be there. Thirty years on,an elite player has to read and react with speed.I don't know if it is fear of reinjury or he has the same lack of pace as his dad but Gio looks like he should know where to be but doesn't always get there. That's rough in football 2024.
Most likely MLS. Charlotte wants him bad and holds his discovery rights, but it seems like he wants LAG. According to Bogert, Charlotte is uninterested in trading the rights away, but what option do they have if Reus is uninterested in moving there?
Well it’s a silly question and point scoring. Just say he has no way of knowing this and you disagree with his conclusions. Sancho didn’t burn his bridges by refusing to apologize.
Given some of the things that are said here, this particular instance of policing language seems selective and odd.
