Horvath is not on the Gold Cup provisional roster. The five who are on there are Callender. Johnson, Turner, Celentano, and Slonina I am also betting they won't take Callender for both when he's just going to sit the bench, but we'll see. And US Soccer does a solid for MLS teams all the time when it comes to call ups and guys being away from teams.
Yeah not really sure why Johnson is called in. Best to give some of the MLS guys a chance alongside either Horvath or Turner who will start all the games of the NL and Gold Cup.
I suspect its just Turner #1 for Nations League and Horvath #1 for Gold Cup. I mean, whoever the #2, #3, and #4 are for the Nations League doesn't really matter. They're unlikely to play. So no need to react to Sean Johnson being on the bench. He's not playing. I have no idea why we have 4 keepers for the Nations League. But whatever....................3 are unlikely to play. The Gold Cup could be as many as 6 games. So whoever is the #2 at the Gold Cup has a chance of playing. That could be Callendar or Celentano. Or Slonina? Hard to say. Hard to say what that order is. Maybe Slonina will only play the U20WC this summer and then get back raring to go for Chelsea preseason.
I hope the Gold Cup is either Celentano/Callender/Slonina or just Turner again. Turner needs games, give him all the games, Nations League, Gold Cup, whatever. Or look at the next generation of US goalkeepers. Horvath and Steffen are dead enders much like say Sean Johnson before them. Decent guys who have on the roster but they're not going to be starting for us with Turner around.
Ethan Horvath is 27 Drake Callendar is 25. But Callendar is treated like he's some up-and-coming youngster and Horvath is treated like some veteran "dead ender" that can't possible develop further. Horvath has an infinitely better resume than Callendar, both in club soccer and US programs. Do folks remember when Horvath kept consecutive clean sheets against Monaco, Dortmund, and Athletico Madrid in the Champions League? Remember when he was in the nets as Molde advanced from a Europa League group of Ajax, Celtic, and Fenerbahce? Or it is just me? It must just be me. I don't get it.
I like Sean Johnson. He's been a trooper for the program. But its silly to call him in anymore. We have better options and younger future options.
My mistake I thought Callendar was younger since I remember the Quakes selling his homegrown rights to Miami just a couple years ago. Okay so in that case go with Celentano and Slonina. Put old man Callendar out to pasture already!
Horvath is not on the provisional roster on the Gold Cup so he will not be there. He picked up a bit of an injury in the promotional playoff that is keeping him out of Nations League and looks like out of Gold Cup. The goalies will be three of Turner, Slonina, Johnson, Callendar, and Celentano. There's no other goalies on the provisional roster.
So in other words every name I just listed plus Sean Johnson who will be 37 at the next World Cup and really should never have been called up again after the last World Cup... starting to feel confident that I "get" who the Gold Cup call ups will be at goalkeeper perhaps unlike some.
I'm guessing the Gold Cup will be Turner, Celentano, and either Johnson or Slonina. I think the Slonina inclusion will just depend on what plans Chelsea has for him and whether he's going on loan and need a full preseason.
According to BJ, some players are coming in for a longer pre-camp. I think two of them are coming later, so they wanted an extra GK in camp to be able to run stuff early.
Notably the only other goalies on the Nations League provisional roster are Horvath and Steffen. So if anyone gets hurt I don’t think we can call up a replacement. Unless there’s some provision I don’t know about for replacing injured players on the provisional.
He is. In sense that his ceiling is unknown, while everybody knows everything about Horvath, and his ceiling is OK, but not great. If we have WC tomorrow Horvath isn't a starter, Callender probably neither, but let's wait and see.
Want Turner loaned out so bad this off-season but they’ll probably make him sit at least one more season on the bench
I think you are correct. But its not the end of the world. But after his next season he must get significant playing time.
It's not just that he had a nightmare with the ball at his feet against Mexico. And it's not that he probably could have done better on the goal. It's that he did the one thing a third keeper can't do - he was nervous when he finally got into a game.
What a save from @bennydiaz12! 💪#ELPvLDN | @eplocomotivefc pic.twitter.com/kmEC1HUgJE— USL Championship (@USLChampionship) May 14, 2023 For an outside the box possibility down the line, here's my vote for my local USL goalkeeper: Benny Diaz of El Paso Locomotive. 24. 6'2. On loan from Club Tijuana. Is he a good enough shot-stopper? That's hard to say. He's good enough so far at USL level, and among the best starters in the league statistically across the board. He was on the USL TOTW twice in the first 10ish weeks. So he's doing something right. But MLS / LigaMX and international are another level. What I will say is that he is the best goalkeeper in the entire USMNT-eligible pool with the ball at his feet. He's incredibly smooth receiving the ball and can be a genuine weapon in downfield distribution. He has played a handful of games with Xolos. If it doesn't happen there, maybe it happens in San Diego. Or maybe Locos owners buy him for Bravos across the river. It seems like he might have some opportunities, if he keeps his play up. And especially if he gets better.
Sean Johnson with a horrible giveaway for a goal. He had a nice save, too, but other keepers can make that save and not give easy goals away. It's time to move on from Sean Johnson for the Nats.
Sean Johnson with the worst howler since the one where he cost us Olympic qualification... immediately after his defender saved his a**... I don't know what the advanced metrics say but Toronto is terrible and always seem to concede late goals. ABSOLUTE CHAOS AND IT ENDS WITH A GOAL pic.twitter.com/e5JrCSDC1T— Nashville SC (@NashvilleSC) June 11, 2023 Once again, this guy will be 37 at the next World Cup, he's never been good enough, and he should never have been called up again after the last cycle ended, given we have dozens of more important national team players in recent memory than one who has 12 caps over 13 years (eg Dempsey Bradley Altidore Cherundolo Bocanegra Howard Jones etc) that didn't get any sort of "proper send off"... something I have been saying since last year.
