Best season in terms of trophies perhaps, but KdB was a level higher as a player in 2017/18 and especially in 2019/20. For me it is just a normal level KdB, perhaps a more inconsistent one even.

Messi's season was poor, with the exception of the World Cup, he inflated his numbers against smaller teams in France.

In the two games that eliminated PSG against Bayern, Messi was very bad (0 goals, 0 assist, 1 shot on target). Almost all goals and assists in UCL were against Macabbi Haifa. He was also very bad in the elimination of the French Cup against Marseille. He didn't appear in big games. That's why he was booed by PSG fans

But he's 35 years old, won the world cup that was missing for his career. He already has all the accomplishments to retire with one of the greats in history. A bad season at PSG is not something that will damage his legacy

That's normal with his age, injuries and obvious hits he has received.

But he is still better - and playing in a higher level team - than Vinicius who doesn't set the WhoScored ratings on fire. Which is heavily favorable towards dribblers. The main page of WS shows him with 7.35, or 7.43 across all competitions. You know, Neymar was a point higher at times. Other dribblers and wingers too.

This is close/worse to the Carrasco-as-winger territory (in his good years). SofaScore shows Vinicius even with a 7.11 across all competitions (for reference: FDJ is at 7.19).

Yes, one can point to a sequence of a few Champions League games, but then we can also point at similar players with better WS ratings in the recent past (and with an established and consistent record in the KO stages of the CL). And those have not been talked up to podium status.

I don't have something personal against Vinicius. He is a fine player. I have something against the usual media dynamics. In the meantime Real Madrid was far removed from the league title, behind an averagely good Barcelona.

Vinícius is the best dribbler in the world. And he's lucky to be at Real Madrid, who are looking after him very well and setting up a scheme for him to shine.

Vinicius doesn't have Neymar's finishing or playmaker qualities, but he could be what Real Madrid expected from Robinho: +10 years as one of the best wingers in the world and 3 or 4 years fighting for the Ballon d'Or in his peak at 25/28 years old

To come back to my ranking. Unfortunately, Messi's announced departure for Inter Miami has put an end to the debate and the potential Ballon d'Or this year. I don't see how journalists will vote for a player who is in the United States.
It would be logical for them to vote for a player in his prime who is still in Europe.

    My ranking:
    1- Haaland
    2- Messi
    3- Mbappé
    4- Vinicius Jr
    5- KDB

Bundesliga team of the season from Bundesliga Fanatic:

    https://bundesligafan.com/2023/05/29/the-bundesliga-fanatic-team-of-the-season-2022-23/

Ronnow; Frimpong, De Ligt, Pavard, Guerreiro; Skhiri, Brandt, Musiala; Kolo Muani; Fullkrug, Nkunku

In goal both Gregor Kobel and Mark Flekken were under serious consideration before Frederik Rønnow won out for the nomination. Defenders unlucky to miss the cut were Matthias Ginter, Jeff Chabot, Danilo Doekhi and Willi Orban.

Bayern talisman Joshua Kimmich was a contender, while we have already mentioned the merits of Jude Bellingham. Xaver Schlager had an excellent first season at Leipzig, with Wataru Endo also a key figure for Stuttgart. Vincenzo Grifo was a contender for Bundesliga top-scorer, while both Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman were unlucky to miss out.

How is there so little appreciation for Ake?. He was probably with Akanji (maybe behind or ahead of Akanji) their most regular and consistent player/defender.

Certainly always first choice on the team sheet, ahead of other defenders that do get mentioned (which he also was in 2020-21 before he got injured, or at the start of 2021-22). He consistently shut down the dangerous attackers of the opponent and played dual/triple roles. From Saka to Salah and Coman/Mane. Of course has been struggling with injuries the last two months.

Not that this is as obvious as the (equally handicapped) Van Dijk previously though. And City is a machine. It helps all the players tick.

Maybe because he only started 22 league games? I don’t know. Many City fans were citing him as their player of the season at one point for the improvement he’s made.

Haaland should have made a statement in this game. But he was a ghost in the final and semifinal. 3 poor performance. 0 goals, 0 assists. This makes the Ballon d'Or dispute more difficult.

I think the best player in the world is Mbappé, but for the titles won, Haaland is still the favourite. Least favorite for not having shone in the semifinals and finals.

so with man city winning the UCL i have two question to all of y´all
Can we really count this as an UCL for Haaland when he didn´t contribute ANYTHING in 2 Semi Games and in the Final??even in the Quarters he wasn´t that impressive? Tbh i rank Mbappes 21/22 campaign over this Haaland UCL campaign.

Where does KDB rank all Time with now having an UCL winning campaign where has a Goal Contribution in every KO round except in the Final?

Haaland made 52 goals and 9 assists in 53 games being the highest goalscorer from Premier League history in a single season, golden boot, top scorer of UCL winning the first UCL from City's history and winning a treble for the second time in Premier League history. Give the Ballon d'Or for that guy plz

Haaland in the FA Cup Final:
    0 G+A
    0 BCC
    1 Big Chance missed

Haaland in his last 4 UCL Games:
    1 Goal in the Quarter
    0 in both Semis
    0 in Final
6 Big Chances missed ( in Quarter, Semi and Final)
    1 Penalty miss
    0 BCC

If someone with this perfomance wins the Balon d or then this Sport is finished.

Well guys, I think Messi was the best player of the season. But if someone says it was Haaland or Mbappe, his opinion is also correct. A separate paragraph for Guardiola, making the city play with a 3-2-2-3 like in the 30s and with 4 playmakers (Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne, Gundogan and Grealish) like La Maquina of river or the 70s Brazil . Extraordinary!

If Haaland wins 2023 Ballon d'Or, it would be no different to Cristiano's 2014 & 2016 Ballon d'Or

    - In 2014: Cristiano didn't play in CdR Final. Cristiano was scoreless in full 90 minutes vs Atletico during the UCL final & scored a useless penalty in 120th minute when Real had a 3-1 lead

    - In 2016: Cristiano was scoreless in UCL semi-finals & final. He was a complete non-factor in Euro 2016 after he got subbed out in 20th minute

That is not a fair assesment at all. By that logic only 5-10 games per season matter and playing in a team that doesnt play in epl or la liga (?) you are basically excluded from even competing for the best player in the world because whatever you do it will be regarded as useless.

Not to mention that at such a small sample size of 5 games many things can happen including your team being inadequate to compete.

It is also double standards. Vinicius dribbling past 3 players against the bottom half team in Spain is deemed exceptional and as a new emerging superstar, when Messi does it, it is an unimportant game, french league.

    Big games are vastly overrated.
