Now that we've won the Promotion/Relegation series with Hamburg, what will happen in the off-season? Who is staying? Who is leaving? Who are likely replacements?

Baumgartl is owned by PSV Eindhoven, but was on loan to Union Berlin the past two seasons. In 21/22 he played 25 matches (2,169 minutes) and in 22/23 he only played 8 matches (563 minutes). I don't think he was injured, just lost his starting spot to a better defender.

If VfB can get him for cheap, then it might be worth a trial. Its not like the Stuttgart back four set any defensive records last season.

Sad news: Borna Sosa wants out and has told teammates that he is leaving. Both Tottenham and Newcastle Untied are interested, but Tottenham cannot give him the Champions League football experience that he is after; thus, Newcastle might be in the pole position. Sosa had 31 assists in his three 1.B seasons, something that will be hard to replace.

Good news: Wataru Endo wants to stay in Stuttgart.

Also, VfB are looking at bringing in three SC Freiburg players who have fallen out of favor at their smaller neighbor: Yannik Keitel, Robert Wagner and Woo-Yeong Jeong.

VfB have already signed left back Maximilian Mittelstädt who played 145 matches for Hertha Berlin. He played 17 times in this past season of relegation. So it looks like he is one of the candidates to replace Sosa on that left side.

I've seen from German VfB fans on Twitter that he would be a good backup to Sosa, but not a good replacement for him.

Do people still believe he has the potential to become a Champion's League level of player? He would have to show a lot more consistency than he did this year. Otherwise, he'll be spending a lot of time on the bench next to Matt Target.

You're talking about Borna Sosa, right? I think that his assists and crosses are quite impressive given the lack of quality Stuttgart have had up front. With a better set of players around him, he might be CL level.

A Manchester Untied scout, Andreas Herrmann, is heading to Stuttgart to join VfB. Stuttgart have been strengthening their scouting department ahead of this summer, bringing in Thomas Henning from SC Paderborn and Stefan Brandenburger from VfL Wolfsburg.

Herrmann is considered an expert in tracking down young talent, so we'll see who he can bring in this summer.

I agree with this 100%. If he does go to the EPL, I hope he fares better than Sasa Kalajdzic.

Tiago Tomas (47 matches, 8 goals, 4 assists) and Tanguy Coulibaly (74 matches, 6 goals, 3 assists) are both leaving Stuttgart. VfB didn't take up the purchase option for the former, and I don't know about the latter, might not get any money for him.

It is pretty clear that a major restructuring is taking place. We know who is leaving, but less is known about who they want to bring in.

Okay, here's a player VfB are bringing back to Stuttgart having let him go to Switzerland in 2022. Matej Maglica is a 1.96m central defender who played 52 matches for St. Gallen and even scored 4 goals.

I missed this bit of news from the end of May. VfB picked up the purchase option on Serhou Guirassy and bought him from Stade Rennes. This is great news. Guirassy is 1.B level and was improving during the season as he got more minutes.

I like some backup scoring. Good thing we have no shame though, signing players not good enough for Freiburg. As long as it makes us better, I'm for it.

Here's some news I translated from the Stuttgarter Nachrichten. I'll continue to check on it as I see/hear anything. Mostly, now, it's for the VfB II, but I expect that to change as the Summer wears on, and we get closer to training camp opening up again.

Luan Simnica comes from 1. FC Cologne (08:19, 20.06.2023)

According to information from our editorial team, VfB Stuttgart has struck again on the transfer market. Luan Simnica (19) comes from 1. FC Köln. The youngster, who recently won the Cologne DFB Cup with the U19 juniors, has signed a long-term contract with VfB Stuttgart. The Swabians transfer training compensation to Cologne for Simnica, where Simnica was last active for eleven years. Simnica could still be used by the Swabians in the U21s in the regional league, but the Stuttgart team is probably pursuing a different plan. The defensive midfielder could initially be loaned out to gain match practice and experience. There are interested parties from Austria and Switzerland, reports among others the "kicker". First, the Cologne "Express" reported on Stuttgart's interest.

VfB brings back Alex Groiß (04:55, 06/20/2023)

VfB Stuttgart II is expanding its line of leading players. Alex Groiß returns to the Swabians. The former junior international should lead the young squad together with captain Dominik Nothnagel. Groiß was last active at SpVgg Bayreuth, where he played 25 games this season. With the yellow and blacks, he was relegated from the 3rd division. Groiß, who was born in Aalen, will sign until 2024. The 1.90m tall right-footed player can be deployed both in central defense and in defensive midfield. The 24-year-old has the experience of 22 games in the 2nd Bundesliga and 65 games in the 3rd division, 36 of them for VfB II.

Glaus goes to the Grasshoppers (09:30, 06/19/2023)

Nicolas Glaus is moving to the traditional Swiss club Grasshoppers Zurich. The 21-year-old goalkeeper switched from FC Basel U21s to VfB U21s almost two years ago and played 19 league games in the regional league team. The Zurich team finished 7th in the Super League last season.

Sotiris Alexandropoulos in focus (04:42, 06/19/2023)

From Portugal it is said that Sotiris Alexandropoulos is associated with VfB Stuttgart. The Sporting Lisbon midfielder is set to be loaned out for next season to gain match practice. Most recently, the 21-year-old Greek was no longer used at Sporting. In the preliminary round, Sotiris Alexandropoulos was at least substituted on in the league, he also played in the Champions League. The Portuguese football magazine "Record" reports that Feyenoord Rotterdam is also interested in the talent. VfB recently loaned out striker Tiago Tomas from Sporting. However, the striker has not been signed for the upcoming season.

Luan Simnica in VfB sights? (05:10, 06/18/2023)

Will VfB grab a newly crowned DFB Cup winner? This is suggested by a report by the "kicker". The Swabians should have midfielder Luan Simnica on their list. Simnica, who recently won the DFB Cup with the Cologne U19, will leave the club in the summer, has already communicated this. According to the regulations, only training compensation is due for the receiving club. According to VfB, clubs from Austria and Switzerland should also be interested.

Malik Fatih becomes assistant coach (04:51, 06/15/2023)

VfB Stuttgart brings a newcomer on board - however, the personnel does not affect the squad for the coming season. After the departure of Max Lesser, however, VfB strengthened its coaching staff. To Malik Fathi. Our editors can confirm the corresponding information from "Bild". The 39-year-old ex-national player previously worked in the youth team at Hertha BSC, but his contract in Berlin has now expired.

I checked on Woo's stats. Only 638 minutes across 26 matches last season, thus, 24-25 minutes per match which means trainer brought him in around minute 65 in those matches as a sub striker. Only one goal. However, the season before he knocked in 5 goals for Freiburg in 32 matches (56 min/match). You can see how he was mostly a starter in 21/22 and a sub in 22/23.

Should be good to back up Guirassy as you suggest. Woo-Yeong has some solid minutes at the 1.B and is still only 23. This could be a good buy if Freiburg agree.

Feyenoord is my main club; thus, I follow their transfer news closely*. This attention being paid to Sotiris is new news for us Feyenoord fans. I will have to check and see what happens.

*Caveat: I follow them via a different website since the BS Feyenoord forum is dominated by some guy who only posts long articles and never engages in back-and-forth discussion.

VfB are looking at bringing a Swiss striker, Darian Males, to Stuttgart. Owned by Inter Milan, he has been on loan to Basel the past two seasons. It looks like he scored 9 goals in 72 matches for Basel over those two seasons. Since the purchase price of €5m was declined by Basel, the price for him might be less than that. VfB didn't want to pay €15m for Thomas, so maybe this is the fallback option.
