How many points would the Quakes have if “one of the most overpaid players in MLS” Daniel had been starting all season… 13 saves and 2 clean sheets in two back-to-back games.Your Man of the Match, Daniel! pic.twitter.com/wcUMKttUnb— San Jose Earthquakes (@SJEarthquakes) June 4, 2023
Red Bull, Real Salt Lake, Austin, Galaxy would have likely been wins or ties if Daniel was playing at the level performance he's been the last 2 games.
It's literally impossible to know if the results would have been different because the matches would have looked very different. There were more changes to the lineups than just Marcinkowski for Daniel. You could just as easily say things might have been different in the first two games had Daniel not stunk it up and played like he didn't even know what game it was. Or the Quakes might be in the bottom half of the standings if Daniel had played and continued to play poorly. Trying to predict the past that never was is a complete waste of time.
Remember that Daniel also presided over our first game vs Atlanta, with two goals scored in stoppage. I realize last February is ancient history, but he did not get off to an auspicious start. I am thrilled he's saving the team from humiliation now...it's too bad the team needs someone to bail it out, game after game.
With his penalty save against the Rapids, Daniel now leads *all MLS keepers* with goals saved over expected for any keeper with at least five games under his belt.Starting to show that promise now. Can he maintain it? #Quakes74 pic.twitter.com/IVlUibGT8b— JMoore Quakes (@JmooreQuakes) June 5, 2023 This is on a per 96 minutes basis. Also true for https://t.co/8GAn01h8pu's model on a per 90 minutes basis although you have to look at his individual page to get his value due to insufficient minutes so far.https://t.co/AhJmtGDfON— JMoore Quakes (@JmooreQuakes) June 5, 2023
Yeah, it wasn't a great start. Still, so with his recent play, it kind of balances out. In either case, he has played too few games to determine long term. I am glad that we got another keeper. JT is average keeper for me. Even with a better constructed team this year, his play hasn't changed my opinion. Still, he is young for a GK and can prove me wrong.
The last time the #Quakes74 had back-to-back clean sheets prior to the last two games was Oct 14 and 18, 2020. The last time they gave up one goal over three games prior to this stretch was back in 2015: Sep 27, Oct 3, and Oct 16.📸: saranicole_mindfulphotography pic.twitter.com/EJyGy8tJgG— JMoore Quakes (@JmooreQuakes) June 7, 2023 JT isn't all that young anymore... 26 and in his sixth year with the Quakes.
Yes, but he could also easily have another decade of play or more at the MLS level if he stays fit. So relatively, he's still pretty young.
It's no guarantee, certainly, but age won't be the primary factor, there. Just saying there are plenty of keepers in the league who played well into their late 30s. It's not uncommon.
I don't deny it all. But JT is also a guy who could use a change of scenery, Joe Willis found a nice home after a long journey from DC where he started with stops in various places and now he's one of the leagues best. So it could happen, Bingham, Tarbell, and Clark are sticking around too. If he isn't on our team in the near future, I won't lose any sleep or care about it.
We've seen JT's peak. While I think JT is a bit better "commanding" the box (they both suck fwiw) and his distribution is much better, it looks like Daniel is a better shot stopper which is more valuable. I do wish we could find the total package though.
I think all these fancy advanced metrics and new playing styles have obscured the fact that 90% of a goalkeeper's job is the actual shot stopping...
Shot stopping is an obvious thing that you want a goalkeeper to be good at. But I do wonder if Daniel is contributing to the overwhelming pressure the Quakes have experienced over the last couple games because his distribution is pretty awful. Now, is it so bad that it negates his shot stopping? I don't know. The outfield players have certainly not made their jobs any easier by making terrible passes and failing to move to receive the ball. But I do think Daniel's distribution has been abysmal and I hope he can improve because he is contributing to the team working waaaaay harder than they need to because he can't seem to kick the ball where he intends at all. Pretty frustrating. I'm not going to call four games definitive, certainly, but it's troubling so far.
Where are the Daniel Doubters now After six games, even giving up a goal Sat, @DanielBritto01 increased his save percentage to an MLS-leading* 84%.He maintains a very healthy lead in goals saved over expected per game for any keeper facing at least 30 SOT. #Quakes74* Small sample size warning1/2 https://t.co/ScJLOaILhI pic.twitter.com/qxmtUg2EZv— JMoore Quakes (@JmooreQuakes) June 13, 2023 The highest save % in MLS since 2013 for any keeper with over 10 games played is...Joe Willis of #EveryoneN this season with 81.5% (16 games) followed by Bill Hamid in 2018 with 81% (14 games). No MLS keeper has played over 20 games and had a save % over 80% since 2013.2/2— JMoore Quakes (@JmooreQuakes) June 13, 2023
For all of those who doubted Daniel... and echoed JT Marcinkowski > Daniel... I stand before you like a dictator and say I told you so. I told all of you before he stepped onto the field, he would be one of the very best keepers in Major League Soccer if he's healthy. He will win us games, he will save us points we other wise would have lost. We should trade JT Marcinkowski and collect something for him in return.
Daniel even almost stopped that point blank header by Lowe. He got a pretty good hand on it but it just had too much pace. The FCD goal I think he could have maybe stopped with better positioning. I want to see more reps before I hail him too much. But so far it’s been promising.
Daniel's penalty save in Colorado was massive. If Quakes had lost that game playing up a man for an entire half, the season might unraveled.
Yeah, not until Emi Ochoa is ready for MLS... I believe there is an even younger goalkeeper coming up behind him, maybe U-15? So eventually keep the pipeline moving, Ochoa from Q2 to Q1, that kid from the academy to Q2. But for now having Daniel with some of the best numbers in the league and JT being the competent backup is a good position to be in. Good teams have depth!

There seems to be some disagreement on whether it's "Britto" or "Brito". You see "Brito" in various places, like mlssoccer roster page, "Daniel de Sousa Brito". But this is his own twitter account, so I guess it's Britto.
I'd be willing to assume Ochoa isn't going to be the guy for us. I think he will leave at some point to ply his trade in Mexico or somewhere he can get regular minutes. But their isn't a shortage of keepers either.
