    I love watching all the golfers squirm now that the PGA and LIV have merged and formed themselves as a for-profit entity.
    Every one of the players who took the shedload of money from LIV getting huge payouts while all the 'loyal' PGA guys get nada other than some incrementally adjusted tournament payouts.

    Imagine the amount of squirming they would do if they were actually forced to have to do a day's normal human work???

    Here's a fair question though - why weren't the PGA members asked to vote on this? Surely that should have been the starting point?

    The DeChambeau interview was good..."the Saudis are trying to do good for the world" (or something like that). He got his $200M, so I guess that gives him the right to be ignorant. :)

    I think "bare-faced arse-licking lying hypocritical money-grubbing bastard" might be a bit more accurate than "ignorant".

    The most green World Cup ever. Carbon neutral. We’re planting gardens. We care about the environment. We are world leaders in sporting climate responsibility.

    Yeah. The Swiss equivalent of the truth in advertising commission has found every single one of FIFA’s environmental claims about the Qatar WC to be, ummm, lies.

    So shocked am I right now by the enormous and completely unexpected perfidy (great word!) of FIFA that I need to lie down.

    better was Monahan's co-opting of 9/11 as a reason to dislike LIV and then trying to walk back those statements post-deal. Oy vey.

    Joke making the rounds:
    As part of the merger, the PGA will control holes 1-8 and 12-18.
    The Saudis do 9-11.

    My guess is that this merger will find it difficult to get past antitrust. Monahan who, the more he’s exposed to the media, the more his intense stupidity is revealed, has said that LIV was a direct competitor and now they’ve eliminated that competition with this merger.

    Yeah, asshat, that’s textbook antitrust law. Gobbling up your competitors, whether by merger or acquisition, to maintain a dominant position in the market is precisely and exactly why antitrust law was written.

    Not true.

    Baseball has an antitrust exemption - and the Supreme Court has eroded the original decision and made it a lot narrower - but the other big 3 don’t and football/soccer certainly doesn’t. Neither does the NCAA.

    Furthermore golf is in a strange situation for a US sport in that it has a serious overseas aspect to it. But this LIV/PGA merger is poised to run afoul of antitrust law.

    Trump has been criminally indicted, for (at minimum known so far) 7 counts of mishandling secret documents.

    yawn....nothing is going to happen at all. Just noise.

    teflon Don. All the while he's too busy lobbing 3rd grade insults at Christie and De Santis.

    unreal that he is going to be the nominee again

    If it was just the mishandled docs I'd probably agree, but it isn't just that,. It's also the Jan 6 investigation, and the election tampering in GA. Those are just the national election issues. He's also having to fight the hush-money claims as well as the ongoing defamation because of "rape" allegations against him.

    Add into this the fact that he now has two former supporters (Pence and Christie) actively running against him, and who will no doubt highlight in no uncertain terms how badly he would represent the US as a re-elected president. He's toast. He may make it to the general election, but he'll never win it.

    Trump 2024 is the largest, most ostentatious vanity election run that has ever happened.

    On a very different note, that has nothing to do with politics. Some of you may have heard that there was a pretty explosive development in astronomy these last weeks in the recent discovery of the first supernova visible to backyard astronomers in ~5 years. This supernova, which has been named SN 2023ixf, is found in the M101 galaxy (also called the Pinwheel Galaxy), and is about 20 million light years away from us.

    SN 2023ixf was discovered Mar 19, 2023 by another amateur astronomer, and confirmed over the next few days. As it happens, I collected images of the M101 galaxy back in mid-April and so when I got back from a meeting I set up my telescope to see this new supernova star. I've included a short video flipping between the M101 galaxy as of April and with the new supernova (you'll see it appearing at ~11 o'clock on an outer spiral arm of the galaxy). Forgive the differences in the contrast between the two images since a lot of the post-collection processing is something I'm still trying to perfect. I have a process that I use, but I'm still working on making it truly reproducible...

    SN 2023ixf is a Type II supernova, which happens due to the rapid collapse of a star that is between 8-50 times the mass of our own sun. The different types of supernovae (there are five main types - with sub-types) are classified by the types of light that they give out, but the main difference between Type I and Type II has to do with whether they are binary stars or single stars, with Type I typically occurring when a white dwarf pulls away too much solar material from its much larger binary partner.

    Republicans are the party of law and order. They’re in favor of strong laws, harsh sentences, a respect for the system. They portray themselves as patriots, those who would die for their country. Whereas all others who do not subscribe to their viewpoint of ‘Murica! are just weak, lily-livered traitors. Respect for the law, the courts, the constitution.

    Except all of the above is so obviously a lie. The present GOP is a real threat to the Republic.

    Case in point. Clay Higgins. An elected GOPer from Louisiana, he’s part of the ruling body of Government, he has pledged allegiance to the US and the Constitution. So rule of law and defense of the Constitution? Well here’s his tweet about Lumpy being indicted. Translation under.

    * 'Perimeter probe': Higgins thinks indictment precedes bigger attack.

    * 'rPOTUS': real POTUS,' Trump.

    * 'Hold': stand back & stand by.

    * 'Buckle up': prepare for war.

    * '1/50 k': military scale maps.

    * 'Know your bridges': militia speak for prepare to seize bridges.

    I saw a headline today that 13million Americans think it'd be OK to use violence to return him to the WH. (didn't click on it to see the source)
