This is the thread to discuss Arsenal transfers and only Arsenal transfers. All comments on humor need to go in the Off Topic forum.

Like Ronaldo and Benzema before him, Messi has sold out and taken the big paycheck to join a club in a weaker league, in a place with unbearable heat, an indifferent fan culture, and little to no football tradition.

Let's be realistic... All 3 are 35+ at the time of "selling out". Maybe they keep going until 40+ but that isn't typical. This is likely their last contract.

Ronaldo got 3yr 75m/yr + bonuses (claims that he will get 200m/yr if all bonuses met)
Benzema got 3yr 100m/yr + bonuses (claims of 20m in bonuses)
Not sure on Messi. Looks like his deal is heavily subsidized by MLS partners.

Can you blame them for agreeing to sign that deal? Would you honestly take significantly less at 35yo just to say you are in a more competitive league?

Messi gets to actually enjoy his time off lol. Cristiano is supposedly hating it over there

I like the move for Messi. Dude gets to live in Miami and ball. Little stress. Get paid. Probably get to go on loan to Barca and be a hero.

MLS fans win because we get to watch the greatest player of a generation in the flesh. F--k yes.

I mean, I’m as much of a hater as anyone, and I get you’re being facetious, but taking a payday in the US makes soooo much more sense than Saudi

Ronaldo has only himself to blame for ending up in Saudi Arabia. His actions at United made him completely toxic to any club trying to compete in the Champions League.

Selling out is fine, if someone offered me 10x my salary to move to Saudi Arabia, I'd take it.

    For sure.

Also, Messi is going to make more money in Miami than that Saudi deal when its all said and done.

The Apple, Adidas and cut of the MLS TV deal.

He also will supposedly get in some prime Miami real estate.

The Saudi deal was good now, $1.5 billion over three seasons, but the Miami deal is gonna make him so much money the rest of his life.

And he is still a Saudi Arabian tourism ambassador.

Not having to live in Saudi Arabia is a huge plus. Miami is one of the worst cities in the country, but I'd take it over Saudi Arabia any day.

He'll probably have a clause in his contract that says he doesn't have to do those gigs. TH14 had one about not playing on turf (though that was legit because of his achilles)

p.s. BigSoccer was broken 15 mins ago, for the first time that I can remember in a really long time. Hmm... Messi to Miami? ;)

When my relatively shitty NYRB beat Miami a weeks or two ago, I looked at Phil Neville (and his son who came on in the dying moments) and thought "how long will Becks continue put up with this mediocrity?" Can anyone even remotely imagine Messi being coached by Neville???

Miami is an amazing city if you are wealthy.

The French Riviera is terrible for people who aren’t wealthy. Miami is that as well.

Miami is an irredeemable vapid trash heap of a city, devoid of any culture, and it can't sink into the ocean fast enough.

The whole place is like one big Jersey Shore fever dream, and it needs to be eradicated sooner rather than later.

Lol, I won't go as far as @Rewinder but Inter Miami were last in attendance last season. They will show up for Messi but I wouldn't expect it to last when he is gone. Tifo had a video about the Latino population being a huge potential market for them, but that population is mostly Cuban which historically leans towards baseball. And the Marlins still have the second worst attendance in MLB, despite being pretty good this year.

Yeah man, there are a lot of cheeks on South Beach and Red Rooster is a dope restaurant. It’s not like Houston, which is just a big parking lot with great strip clubs.

Messi loves Miami and already has a massive house there.
