Two legends in this pregame photograph from 1976; El “Big Sombrero” Tampa Stadium and “El Rey” Pele. The Tampa Bay Rowdies defeated the New York Cosmos 5-1 in that historic game. The rivalry between New York and Tampa was the strongest in the North American Soccer League.

I went to a Sounders/Whitecaps game at the Kingdome where they estimated 8,000 Vancouver fans came to the game. Portland/Seattle games also attracted thousands of away supporters. Those games, like they are today, were probably the biggest rivalry games.

This is from the NASL Media Guide in the final days, 1984/5. Three hotel restaurants and Original Joe's. Man, what a rip-roaring town we were. All them travelin' media need to eat somewheres ...

NASL Quotes: "Becoming the first woman referee in the NASL was an incredible moment but it didn’t sink in right away. When you’re in the here-and-now for 90 minutes, with a bunch of players running around the field, you are completely present. When you come off the field, your adrenaline is so high, but it's a happy adrenaline because you're not focused on anything else." - Betty Ellis, NASL Referee

When I was in sixth grade our class took a tour of the Olympia Brewery. Back in the day it was one of the two big regional brands along with Rainier. Both iconic breweries were located adjacent to I-5, Rainier in Seattle, Olympia in Tumwater, Wa. Both breweries were bought by other brands and no beer is brewed at either location now. Tully's Coffee took over the Rainier site and replaced the famous big red neon "R" sign with a big green neon "T", but, recently, as an homage to the history of the site put a big neon "R" sign back up. Rainier lager is now brewed in Irwindale Ca, but, with plans to brew is Wa. state again. Olympia sadly went out of production in 2021.

And when I was a boy scout about that time we got to shoot .22's at the Boy Scout camp rifle range. They often brought inner city kids to camp to give them an opportunity to experience camping and Boy Scout activities, but, did not let them anywhere near the guns.

NASL Dateline: On 10 June 1975, soccer in North America changed forever when the New York Cosmos unveiled 34-year old Brazilian superstar Pelé as the team's newest acquisition in a lavish ceremony at the 21 Club, having signed a 3-year, $4.7 million personal services contract with Warner Communications the night before in Bermuda and then jetted to New York on Warner's private plane. Pelé also signed a $200,000 endorsement deal with Pepsi, and would debut 5 days later in an exhibition against the Dallas Tornado in New York. Said Pelé: "You can say now to the world that soccer has finally arrived in the United States."

Happy 62nd birthday to Canada international Branko Segota (number 20), the Croatian-born striker who joined the New York Arrows at the age of 17 and reeled off 3 straight MISL titles -- while doing double-duty in the NASL with the Rochester Lancers, where he scored 25 goals in 39 games (1979-80) -- then signed with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and tallied 30 goals in 3 seasons and closed out his NASL career with a career-high 18 goals for the Golden Bay Earthquakes, then went back indoors and won 6 more MISL titles with the San Diego Sockers, making 8 MISL All Star teams, finishing his career as the NASL's 13th all-time leading scorer and the MISL's second, while also playing in the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

Soccer in the 1970s: Tampa Bay Rowdies forward Rodney Marsh wrestles with Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Buzz Parsons during Soccer Bowl '79 at Giants Stadium.

NASL Not in the Hall of Fame: When Paul Hammond was loaned to the expansion Tampa Bay Rowdies by Crystal Palace in 1975 for off-season training, who could have imagined he'd quickly emerge as the gold standard for goalkeepers in North America. Hammond jump-started his career in an era of standout keepers, posting 40 shutouts in a 9-year span with Tampa Bay (1975, 1977-78), the Houston Hurricane (1978-80), Seattle Sounders (1981-82), Team America (1983) and the Toronto Blizzard (1984) and leading the league with a 1.16 goals against average in 1984. He won Soccer Bowl '75 and returned to Soccer Bowl finals in 1982 and 1984 and earned 3 all-NASL honors. Hammond also dominated indoors with the Houston Summit (1978-79) and Hartford Hellions (1979-80), capturing the MISL Goalkeeper of the Year Award and an all-MISL nod in 1979. Although numerous goalkeepers from the 1970s and 1980s have been overlooked by the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame - including Shep Messing, Alan Mayer, Bob Rigby, Hubert Birkenmeier, Winston DuBose, Ken Cooper and Victor Nogueira, among others - Hammond has never been nominated to the Hall of Fame ballot in either the Player or Veteran categories.

NASL Source Clubs: Luton Town was an 85-year old club that broke into the English first division in 1974, but suffered a series of financial setbacks and was forced to sell and loan key players. As a result, Englishman Freddie Goodwin swooped in and stocked his expansion Minnesota Kicks with Hatters' talent for the 1976 NASL season, including forward Ron Futcher, midfielder Alan West and defender Steve Litt. A year later, Goodwin came back to add defenders Paul Futcher and Paul Price as Minnesota bolted to a combined 33-22 over its first 2 NASL seasons, winning back-to-back Pacific Division titles, reaching the Soccer Bowl' 76 final, and averaging 27,928 in attendance.

With the 1986 World Cup elimination the previous month and the collapse of the NASL in 1984, this was the saddest time in US soccer history.

NASL Dateline: On 16 June 1985, the United States continued its international free-fall with a 5-0 loss to England before 10,145 at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. Kerry Dixon and Gary Lineker each scored twice for England, while the U.S. made 5 substitutions and shifted its focus towards younger players that would ultimately comprise the 1990 FIFA World Cup squad. Line-Ups: USA: Arnie Mausser (Tim Harris 46'), Kevin Crow, Mike Windischmann, Dan Canter (Michael Brady 54'), Paul Caligiuri, Perry van der Beck, Ed Radwanski (Steve Snyder 79'), Rick Davis, Bruce Murray (Jacques Ladouceur 46'), John Kerr (Jeff Hooker
46'), Hugo Pérez; England: Chris Woods, Viv Anderson, Kenny Sansom (Dave Watson), Glenn Hoddle (Trevor Steven), Terry Fenwick, Terry Butcher, Brian Robson (Peter Reid), Paul Bracewell, Kerry Dixon, Gary Linekar, Chris Waddle (John Barnes).

Happy 71st birthday to Tony Picciano (number 18), the Argentine-American defender who starred at Long Island University, then was taken by the New York Cosmos in the 3rd round of the 1975 NASL Draft and debuted in Pelé's inaugural game later that season, ultimately playing for New York in 1975-76.

This game took place on Wednesday, uly 19, 1978. The Detroit Express beat the Quakes 4-3. Scoring for San Jose were ! Paul Child, Victo Kodelja and Peter Ressel. It happened a week after San Jose lost 10-0 to Detroit in the Silverdome. What a disgrace that was!

NASL Dateline: On 15 June 1975, Pelé made his long-awaited debut with the New York Cosmos, netting 1 goal and 1 assist in a 2-2 draw with the Dallas Tornado in an exhibition match before 21,278 at Downing Stadium. The CBS-TV broadcast drew an audience of 10 million - a record for soccer in America at that time - and earned the Cosmos a $50,000 payday for the TV rights, and over 300 journalists from around the world covered the event. Robert Redford and Mayor Abe Beame were among the VIPs in attendance, the patchy sod was spray-painted green to look uniform, 150 photographers ringed the field, and Pelé exchanged Brazil and American flags with U.S. star Kyle Rote Jr. in a pre-game ceremony. Just like that, the NASL's heyday officially began.

NASL Dateline: On 14 June 1978, Graham Paddon scored twice to lead the Tampa Bay Rowdies to their 3rd straight victory in a 5-4 win over the Chicago Sting before 2,134 at Soldier Field.

Happy 69th birthday to Chile international Manny Rojas, who capped a 7-year national team career by playing in the 1982 FIFA World Cup, then joined the Tampa Bay Rowdies and notched 8 goals to lead the team in scoring in 1983, and split the 1984 season between the Golden Bay Earthquakes and the Chicago Sting, helping Chicago win the Soccer Bowl Series '84 by scoring 2 key goals in the post-season, and ultimately 4 MISL seasons with the Sting that resulted in 70 goals from 1984-88.

Happy 70th birthday to Canada international Tony Chursky, the Simon Fraser University star who played in the 1975 Pan American Games and signed with the Seattle Sounders as a free agent, quickly developing as one of the NASL's top goalkeepers, amassing 37 shutouts in 158 games with Seattle (1976-78), the Chicago Sting (1979), California Surf (1979) and Toronto Blizzard (180-82), leading the NASL in goals against average as a rookie (0.91), earning all-NASL honors in 1977 and helping Seattle reach the Soccer Bowl '77 final, then closing out his career with 4 MISL seasons with the Tacoma Stars (1983-88).

There is a Mexican restaurant called El Papucho on San Carlos @ Shasta, in a legendary strip mall. Same strip mall where Larry's Theatrical was. El Papucho has been there for at least 40 years. Killer old-school place.

There is a photo of Krazy George being interviewed by Spanish language radio in the 1970s. KNTA, I believe. Also a photo of Pele when he came here.

Happy 78th birthday to Laurie Calloway (number 3), the journeyman English defender who played for Blackburn Rovers (1968-70) and Shrewsbury Town (1972-74) but found his greatest success in the NASL (1974-77, 1979), where he made 74 appearances with the San Jose Earthquakes and earned all-NASL honors in 1974, then turned to coaching and led the California Surf (1981) and Seattle Sounders (1983), steered the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks to the 1991 APSL title and the CONCACAF Champions' Cup semi-finals -- losing to Club America of Mexico -- and later managed the San Jose Clash of MLS (1996-97).

Happy 55th birthday to midfielder Danny Pena, the U.S. youth international who skipped college to turn pro at the age of 20 and scored 40 goals in 85 games over 2 MISL seasons with the Wichita Wings (1990-92), then later played in MLS for the Los Angeles Galaxy (1997-2001) and Tampa Bay Mutiny (2001).

NASL Memories: Gert Trinklein (number 5) was a steady West German defender who appeared in 230 matches and won back-to-back German Cups in a decade with Eintracht Frankfurt (1968-78). Born on 19 June 1949, Trinklein jumped to the NASL in 1979 and made 56 appearances with the Dallas Tornado (1979-80), helping Dallas win the 1980 Central Division title and reach the conference semi-finals in 2006, Trinklein was elected to the German parliament as a member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), but was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011 and died 6 years later at the age of 68.

NASL Dateline: On 19 June 1977, Pelé scored all 3 goals and the New York Cosmos won their 6th straight in a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies before a Father's Day crowd of 62,394 at Giants Stadium, the largest attendance for a professional soccer match in the U.S. at that time.

NASL Dateline: On 19 June 1982, the Vancouver Whitecaps got regulation goals from Gerry Gray and Terry Yorath and rallied to win their 8th in a row with a shootout victory over the Chicago Sting before 6,414 at Wrigley Field.

NASL Dateline: On 19 June 1983, Roberto Cabanas and Giorgio Chinaglia scored 2 goals each and Franz Beckenbauer added a solo tally as the New York Cosmos took over 1st place in the Eastern Division with a 5-1 rout of the Toronto Blizzard before 25,247 at Giants Stadium.

RIP, HUBERT: Vogelsinger, soccer camp pioneer and NASL coach, passes away - Front Row Soccer

Sad to report the death of Hubert Vogelsinger, the Austrian-born coach and player who immigrated to the U.S. in 1961 and built a youth coaching empire that nourished generations of top American players, coaches and officials, while also coaching 3 NASL teams and spending 8 seasons in charge of Yale University. He was 85. Vogelsinger was already a successful collegiate coach at Brandeis and Yale before taking the reins of the Boston Minutemen in 1974, and he went on to roll up a career record of 52 wins, 40 losses and 1 draw with Boston (1974-76), Team Hawaii (1977) and the San Diego Sockers (1978), winning 3 division titles while coaching players like Eusebio, Ade Coker, Wolfgang Suhnholz, Antonio Simoes, Charlie Mitchell, Alan Mayer and Jan van der Veen. Vogelsinger also launched the Vogelsinger Soccer Academy in 1965, ultimately putting as many as 3,000 kids through their paces each summer.
