Not a specific financial number but beating forecasts for subscriptions and viewership has a direct impact on finances. As far as World Soccer Trolls go, they aren’t a serious journalistic outfit. It’s just eurosnobs mutually stroking each other. What they have to say has relevance to reality.
Because somebody doesn’t value what you value that doesn’t mean they’re not sophisticated. It’s ok for Americans to like things the way Americans do things.
Because it isn't. It's not really that way except for a small number of teams, like literally 8 or so (and even among those, most wouldn't tank their league season to win CL).
I think almost every team in South America would give up a league title for a Libertadores. Europe has a different culture though, where top team collect trophies like Pokemon. They aren't allowed to tank anything, they have to catch them all lol
It seems that the fans of the teams participating embrace it just fine, at least if they go deep, but it doesn't do much to attract the neutral. The late rounds of the UEFA Champions League draw a neutral audience because it's the highest level of the club game and big stars are out there. If your MLS team gets knocked out of CONCACAF or doesn't qualify, the remainder of the tournament doesn't always offer a product that's more compelling than watching regular MLS as a neutral, and it's on a different TV platform and often in strange timeslots. Seems that CONCACAF is trying to do better with timeslots by putting the final leg on a Sunday, but then they put it opposite the NBA Finals. The new format next year makes the final a single leg on the weekend. We'll see how they do with the scheduling.
They literally played the audio of Eddie Cue from Apple on the podcast. Unless you think they doctored it.
Ideally they should both be important. Kind of like the Premier League and the Champions League. The one you haven’t won (or haven’t won lately) will be the priority, but both are top trophies. In reality the CCL brings more validation among hardcore fans but it’s still not a competition that really moves the needle in any broad manner. And last year’s MLS Cup showed the league can feel more like an elevated event when everything lines up well.
Anyone see Apple announce Vision Pro at the opening of WWDC yesterday? Of course there were lots of immediate knee-jerk, negative responses to the price and to the technology. But what I found interesting was the use case they were proposing for immersive experiences in sports. Lots of online reviewers have mentioned the possibility of using Vision Pro to sit in virtual court seats at an NBA game. Anyone think that’s partly why Apple is so invested in MLS? that they’re going to create an awesome viewing experience? Got to wait till next year to find out, but if they do I’m definitely buying a pair of these $3500 goggl…oh, hell no.
Wide ranging interview/discussion with former MLS player Bobby Warshaw: Gives his views on the Apple deal, expansion, etc.
We may soon have someone else that gets the apple ratings information, unless they mean MLS is sharing the apple money.(If any of it is true) The deal MLS is putting together to lure Leo Messi is truly unprecedented.✅ Profit sharing with Apple✅ Adidas offering up a cut as well✅ “(MLS) has gotten very creative.”➕ more news on Tata Martino’s link to Miami.w/ @FelipeCar & @MLSist: https://t.co/MNxjUldi9O— Paul Tenorio (@PaulTenorio) June 7, 2023
Sure, the "sticker shock" will be there initially, if you actually look under the hood though: it's in line for something of this scale. By that I mean, it's a 4K+ TV, high end computer, has high end audio, does 3D, does everything an iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, and Mac does, also has an optic ID (retina scan that unlocks things!!!)......all in a small package that you wear. That thing is pretty ridiculous in a potentially wonderful way. It's literally those computers in Minority Report brought to real life. Also, this is the Pro model. At some point one would have to believe that there'll be a Vision "Regular" model that costs less. The first iPhone retailed for $700 with an exclusive contract with AT&T back in the day. The original iPad was $500 and $600 dollars. The original Mac cost $2499 in 1984!!!
I get it, not going to argue that. All I'm saying is look at the actual technology in the thing. When you do that, and couple the tech with the capabilities and potential of the device, the high price tag isn't that high. That said....I'm not it's target audience, and that price is too steep for me.
Thread derailment: Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler That computer is awesome! Clearly they’ll be putting a lot of AI (or ML or whatever they want to call it) into that beast. Excited to see where this tech goes. I’m not an early adopter, especially at this price point, but looking forward to the 2025 version
Every day and twice on sundays!. Libertadores is the continental glory, not so many teams can rech such heights! jokes aside, yeah, Libertadores is worth like 10-15 league titles.
Twitter is failing to come up with how its bad for MLS, but they are definitely coming up with lots of reasons its bad for Messi lol
That's more about history, too; Libertadores is a historically prestigious tournament. CCL just doesn't have that yet. I do think more competitions between the leagues will bring that level of relevance over the long-term.
Should note from a quick look into the QTs: This isn't changing MLS rules for Messi. He would be a designated player, which means there are no limits to his compensation. And this story does not say other teams are paying for him. https://t.co/05dS3mm0ey— Paul Tenorio (@PaulTenorio) June 7, 2023
