Brother read your post again but none of the examples you have except one was what I was talking about.
Yeah they have billboards up around town now. They are a green background with a soccer ball (but it's not an obvious soccer ball design) and says in big letters at the top "Let's Kick It" and smaller letters at the bottom "San Diego's newest professional team" and then the MLS logo in the corner. Nothing offensive just super bland and nothing about it unique to the city or the soccer community here. Probably being overly sensitive but just hoping they get this right.
First if you want pro/rel you are preaching to the choir here. Would love it. But we live in the real world not a fantasy world and in the real world we don't have it and aren't going to get it anytime soon so if I want to watch top club football in San Diego I am stuck with MLS. In terms of the names I just don't care that much. City FC is kinda boring, but any name name is going to sound fake and plastic. The only name that carries any cache is the "Sockers" but they aren't willing to sell the rights and even then you'd have howls of derision from people claiming it's to American and can't even be spelled right. It's just a lose lose. As I said above the name is going to tick people off no matter what but below are my preferences Athletico/ Athletic is my choice you see both words used in the English and Spanish speaking worlds. Deportivo only see it in the Spanish speaking world so not a huge fan. FC is used for spanish speaking clubs like Sevilla, and Tijuana but I have never seen an English speaking club use CD. Mission; the Sycuan tribe view the missions (imo rightfully) as an oppressive force that enslaved their people and stole their land. The Mission system was so bad that there was a deadly revolt against it by the Kumeyaay so this one is a non starter.
They should just go with Atletico San Diego then... but they won't.... it's already been decided that it will be San Diego FC.
San Diego State Alum Eric Wynalda would be proud, accept that we don't really call this region So Cal that's more of an LA thing.
Weird thought, but with PSV Eindhoven going American maybe interesting. Two of the major companies in Eindhoven, Philips and ASML, are currently sponsoring PSV under umbrella 'Brainport'. These two companies, the largest (ASML) and one of the more well known (Philips) European tech companies, have a presence, and with ASML, quickly growing presence in San Diego. There is a significant overlap industry-wise as well, name recognition of ASML/Philips in San Diego is of importance for them (especially for ASML, having to compete with US tech companies), and name recognition of San Diego in Eindhoven could help recruit specialized knowledge workers. Simply said, San Diego is like Eindhoven, but with palm trees and sun. Instead of doing it the lazy-way, buying overpriced over-the-top players, it would make much more sense to follow the Dutch approach. The rise of the league has been an underreported miracle, I believe mostly because it has been driven by performance in depth, not individual deep-runs like Portugal or France. Anyway, the league is currently ranked above France, and will have 4! CL spots if things do not change. Done by fiscal discipline and focus on development. Those with a model like Miami, such as the Turkish League and others before, failed miserably. An equal! partnership with PSV, with shared sponsors and football knowledge/staff and players, would be an interesting collaboration.

I would be surprised if the name is anything other than "San Diego FC". As for the colors, they do lean a lot into black and white - but I'd love to see primrose yellow and a classy burgundy as part of the color scheme.
