I come from a family of Catholics on both sides. One wing of my mom's family ended up going nondenominational because her dad married a divorced Lutheran and they (Catholic Church) weren't happy about it. Dad's parents bailed on religion when the church they took him to get baptized at wouldn't because they didn't tithe enough money. They didn't attend church after that. Radical in the early 60s especially.
I also suspect my mom's experiences with Catholic school and other things made her not attend church as much as an adult. She'd insist on being a Lapsed Catholic, but I think the way she was raised contributed to that. I joke the only thing Catholic about me is that I cross myself before I do something nerve wracking.

That said, reading a bunch of mythology books growing up also makes you question a bunch of things.

Plus, I just wanted an excuse to post Soundgarden lyrics. That particular song is apt about the religious right.

I am with @rslfanboy that i am yet to see anything which suggests there is a problem with the medical care being provided let alone that the government should intervene.

I am also deeply suspicious about why everyone is suddenly so agitated about something that effects a tiny percentage of the population

shouldn’t we just let people get in with their lives?

Sounders answered part of this, but I also did not say "increase." I said continued.
    There is Brandon Teena.
    There is Pulse.
There are plenty in betwee, and there are continued killings.

(And I'm traveling today, so no, I don't have sources. But you can look this up as well.)

But it comes from a political party that excels in performative outrage! Isn't that enough to convince you it's a serious issue in and of itself and not something they are simply using to get people outraged? :whistling:

    Heaven is gonna be lonely.

Btw, in your studies have you gone into the idea of how hell being hot is a Euro construct. Some warm weather indigenous people believe hell to be cold, well their version of hell/where the bad people go.

Not specifically looked into that but "hell" is always the opposite of what they like.

On a related matter, I recently discovered a brilliant NZ television series from 10+ years ago called "The Almighty Johnsons". One of the characters is the Nordic goddess "Hel", the goddess who presides over the underworld Hel. The series is fantastic (although I'm still working my way through the 3 seasons).

People who think that young children are getting gender confirming surgery are equally gullible as:

People who think public schools encourage kids to identify as cats and have kitty litter in the room to let them relieve themselves instead of using the bathroom.

But these same people think I'm nuts for thinking that the ultimate destination and goal of the anti-gay laws will be implementing what the Bible says.

    But why not kindergarten?
    Why not pre-school?
Why not books for kids at 3 months?
Each age level will have different understandings what it will mean for somebody to have two moms or two dads, and books should be written to that particular age. But why would anybody who was not against LGBTQ+ be interested in prohibiting those books at any stage? Some kids have two moms, some kids have two dads, it is just a part of life.

Apart from the way Sounders answered, it is not as if this is done on a whim. Kids experiment and investigate so there is a team which evaluates the youth because it is a pretty drastic change.

The neighbors across the street from me were "roommates." I figured it out, and told my parents. I don't remember my dad's reaction, but my mom was something like, "oh, that makes sense." lol.

Ironically, practicing Christians seem to have no issue with indoctrinating children with religious mumbo jumbo. No age is too young for that. And not in a light, fun way like we tell kids tales about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

In the early 2000s I remember watching a Bill O'Reilly segment on this. He was saying how awful it would be if he had to go to a baseball game with a gay player on the field because it would force him to talk about how gays have sex if his kid asked what "gay" was. That's ultimately what it comes down to - these types of people only define us in terms of how we have sex, not who we are attracted to. As such, they think reading LGBT+ friendly books to kids means we are inherently talking about what sexual positions gays do (ones that apparently straights don't do), what fetishes gays have (that apparently straights don't have), etc. It's as if they think reading a book about how two male penguins raised a baby penguin together is no different than watching gay porn.

superdave is falling under the same illusion - gender affirmative care at 6 is no different than talking to a 17 year old about the consequences and implications of having a sex change operation.

One of the things that crossed my mind the other day, after reading or listening to something about LGBTQ+, was about Jesus and sex and sexuality. As I understand it, Jesus never had sex (confirmed by a quick internet research), so was he heterosexual, or gay, or trans...or something else?

And "God created us in his image," right? So how did God create both men and women? Is God a hermaphrodite?

Sure, that is a bit sarcastic, but it also gets at questions I have on how God or Jesus talks/writes about gender and sexuality.

@superdave I'm going to ask you this and respectfully ask you to answer it directly without going off into tangents or strawman arguments. Just answer it.

I've mentioned before my best friend from high school who, the last time I saw her, told me she would disown her son if he turned out gay (which I'm pretty sure he was).

Now tell me, who is the most capable of objectively answering any questions her son has regarding sexual orientation that will be in the best interests of the son? Is it my homophobic friend who said she would disown him, or a "detached" school counselor who is trained in answering such questions?

This isn't a Bible/sceince fight. This is just being a "living-thinking being" thing. We don't need science and religion to exercise empathy and compassion.

In the ancient Near East it was normal for males to marry only after they become economically viable, which usually happened in their late 20s or 30s. Given Jesus's dad was a carpenter, he probably wasn't all that rich, so it's not unusual for him to be single at his age. Whether or not he had sex with prostitutes we will never know. Christians will say no, but the reality is that it would not be unusual for someone in his position to have done so.

The creation story is ripped off of Mesopotamian creation stories. The gods created humans in their image: male and female. The version in Genesis is interesting in how it both reveals and conceals its Mesopotamian roots - it has males and females created in "our" image, but man in "his" image.

If you read the Torah in the context of Mesopotamian religious beliefs, you will see obvious and explicit parallels that make a lot of sense compared to how modern Christians and Jews treat the texts.

“Hard-right Republicans, still angry with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s handling of the debt ceiling bill last week, sunk a GOP procedural vote Tuesday in a show of strength in a razor-thin majority,” the Washington Post reports.

“In a surprise rebuke for McCarthy (R-CA) and the rest of GOP leadership, the Republican-led House failed to pass the rule for consideration of several bills this week. Eleven Republicans broke with their party to vote with Democrats, and the rule fell short on a 206-220 vote — the first rule vote to fail since November 2002.”

“House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) changed his vote to ‘no’ at the last minute so the GOP could revisit the vote, which plunged this week’s GOP legislation in limbo.”

Politico: “The move was entirely unexpected by senior Republicans.”

ok, I’m convinced now, there is only one way to look at this issue and all parents are the same and all Christians are the same and all doctors are the same and all non cis kids are the same. You guys all win.

    Winston has learned his lesson.
I could not love the first line Patti Smith sings on Horses any more than I already do.

Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine
