Quakes lost that game after the referees made a dubious PK call in favor of the Union. This was during the refs' late-season war against uppity Matias Almeyda, punctuated by numerous questionable potentially game-altering calls -- at LAFC, at Atlanta, and of course in the home match versus Philly.
I wish they had! That way they wouldn't be here crapping on us! We've gotten some terrible calls this season, and we've gotten away with a few fouls that should have been yellow cards. I don't think the breaks are anything close to even yet, but then, I mostly hate the refs. Go Quakesfans!!
He’s not our coach anymore, thank goodness. I don’t give a squat about Matías. And I sure as hell want better refs than we have! That said, there’s been a noticeable improvement in the officiating over the last ten years or more. And it’s a tough job. Still, the refs need to be better. Go Quakesfans!!
Hopefully Cade Cowell’s and Niko Tsakiris’ return will spark the team’s offense to life. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Probably not as much as the return of Carlos Akapo . He really sparked us against CO even though we didn't score.
If we tie or beat Philadelphia I will become a full believer in Luchi Gonzalez, however I expect us to lose 3-2, or 3-1 or 2-1. Philly is just that good.
Philly is really good. I think one of the top 2 or 3 teams if not the best. They play even or better in the road. Last year, 7-5-5, this year 3-3-1, so given that we’re kind of a mid-level team I feel like chances are about even. However I’m cautiously optimistic because we are at about full strength and have some momentum. We’re going to have to score more than 1 goal though I think. So if we get the first goal we’d better not try to bunker for 50 minutes.
I agree, my worry is, Luchi will have us play conservative against a very high pressing Philly team who is also starting to get there legs and full strength squad back and coming off the CCL-hangover. They're starting to score multiple goals and wins again so my optimism isn't too high, and not getting blown out would be acceptable to me. If we lose to Philly in a good close game, I also will find that acceptable. If we BUNKER for 80 minutes and absorb all the pressure we will probably lose, unless Daniel stands on his head and has the greatest game a GK in MLS ever had. I'm curious do we ride out what we've been doing or does Cowell go back into the lineup? Whats the back look like? Maire, Beason, Rodrigues, Truaco or Akapo, Beason, Rodrigues, Marie or Akapo, Mensah, Rodrigues, Marie or Marie, Mensah, Rodrigues, Truaco or Akapo, Mensah, Rodrigues, Truaco or Yves, Don G, Tyff, Nedz
I think Cade will go right back into the starting lineup. I'd like to see Akapo start on the right and Marie on the left but not sure if Akapo is ready for a start. But if we need a goal I hope he subs on on the right and Marie moves to the left. As for Mensah vs. Beason, I don't know. We've given up one goal in the last 3 games with Beason / Rodrigues so maybe Luchi holds to that at least for another game?
I think Beason/Rodrigues work better together. Beason's speed helps Rodrigues get into the attack. He doesn't need to track back and cover for Mensah's lack of speed. I also think Beason has been vocal and organizing the defense and it's been good. Lots of speed with Akapo, Beason, Rodrigues and Marie together.
I don't think of Beason being speedy but I have seen him get it going if he has a long recovery run. But in shorter movements, not so much. Another good thing about Beason is that he is pretty dominant in the air. Those 1v1 contested headers that come out at say the top of our defensive 3rd - he's all over those. If Luchi is an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" guy he might stick with the hot hand (Rodridgue-Beason). We'll see. Suddenly the sheen is gone from the Mensah acquisition - suspended, coughed up a goal against LAG, we've had good performances from his replacements, etc. That's why I keep tossing out the possibility of trading him for help with the attack, if that (a trade) is the only way we're going to get the capital to do that. But OTOH we do need the depth. I do think that Munie could come in and do a good job if needed.
