Paredes breaking thru at Wolfsburg & being a factor in the Bundesliga says almost infinitely more than a couple pedestrian bench performances right off the plane for a u-20 team. The US crashing out early enough means he could have and should have been at this camp. And I expect it for GC. We've really dragged our feet on this one.
Repped for Tim Ream being with the team for the week Unrepped for a just fired Jason Kreis being part of the coaching team
Probably hard to pull together a staff for this. I do wonder why Varas is not involved and whether that’s indicative of his future plans (if he’s in the running for some MLS job for instance). Or if Varas will hopefully be added at a later date once he’s had some time to decompress post U20 World Cup.
As I said in the next coach thread, that's really their fault for their mistake of a interim coach. Hudson didn't come in with such a good resume that you also could risk his jetting before summer due to his lack of investment in the program. You have to address that misstep, before throwing your hands up on their behalf and proclaiming there wasn't much they could do on short notice.
I’m projecting Miles Robinson, Trusty, McKenzie, and either Brooks or Miazga for the Gold Cup. The other center backs on the Gold Cup provisional are Long, Neal, EPB, and Wynder.
They really worked quick to bring Jason Kreis in for this as an assistant. It’s only been a few days since he was fired by Inter Miami. Now it is probably very hard to pull assistants for something short term like this and you’re probably working with a very limited pool to begin with.
It was clear it was going to be Kreis. It's like a two month job; it's going to be someone with US Soccer ties and unemployed. He might actually be the only dude who fits the descriptions, aside from Jurgen. I thought maybe Tab before but it turns out he's coaching Hartford for now. No one with a job is leaving a job for this. Really, the only thing I'm a bit surprised about is Varas not being included (so far).
Yeah, who exactly did people expect? It was going to be somebody unemployed, and willing to do something for just 2 months. It was going to somebody like Kreis or Caleb Porter or somebody of that ilk to join the staff.
How could it be "clear" when he wasn't available (aka "fired") until three days ago? Obviously it would've been someone else if Inter Miami didn't fire Neville and Kreis for another week, right?
Kreis was part of the vaunted Inter Miami coaching staff until three days ago... https://theathletic.com/4569894/2023/06/01/inter-miami-phil-neville/ Inter Miami has parted ways with head coach Phil Neville, multiple team sources tell The Athletic. Sources were granted anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the decision. The Miami Herald was first to report Neville’s firing. The club later announced the move, adding that assistant coach Jason Kreis had also been let go. Assistant coach Javier Morales will serve as interim head coach. The decision comes a day after Miami’s 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls and with Miami sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with just 15 points in 15 matches this season.
just make Ream an assistant coach already Good to see ya, @timream5 👋The veteran defender has joined the team in LA to rehab from injury. pic.twitter.com/bAx13jpCJD— U.S. Soccer Men's National Team (@USMNT) June 5, 2023
I’m speculating but Varas could be up for one of the open MLS jobs and may want that process to play itself out first. Or he just may need a bit of a break post U20:World Cup and they’ll add him later. He could also just want some time to think through his own future and what he wants to do next. Technically Caleb Porter’s ties to US Soccer are about the same as Kreis. Both coached a U23 team that failed to qualify for the Olympics.
He’s played little at Wolfsburg. Hee needs more games. I agree with Pegasus that he’s not Pulisic level but not that that fact should keep him out of the first team. Especially as a bench option he’s someone I put on when needing a goal for his stellar work drawing fouls alone. But if he’s not integrated right away, I won’t be mad (depending on who is in his spot). He needs to keep growing and keep improving and become undeniable.
You don't have to judge Paredes off a questionable U20 environment when you can judge him as a legit pro in the Bund environment. And any club scout would judge him off what he does with Wolfsburg to a far greater extent than a brief amateur tournament.
Good one. I wish he played more, I have no idea if he’s good enough. Buy the coaches have watched him so they weren’t compelled to play him. Paredes will have the summer to rest and then hopefully wins a starting spot at Wolfsburg. Take it from there. He turned 20 a month ago and hasn’t had his breakout season yet.
After watching Paredes play in the Bundesliga I can tell he is not a Pulisic level talent, you could also tell in MLS and in his prior YNT play.
That seems like such a high bar that it's not really relevant? How is Paredes relative to Arriola, Zendejas, Morris, Aaronson, etc. We've got plenty of winger spots for guys not as good as Pulisic! Just last cycle we were calling up everyone from Corey Baird to Benji Michel to Tyler Boyd to Jonathan Lewis to Chris Mueller...
