Breaking: MLS has reached a $500 million agreement with billionaire Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation to bring an expansion team to San Diego

The deal comes after multiple years of discussions about where to add MLS’s 30th franchise, with previously prioritized bids in both Sacramento (led by Ron Burkle) and Las Vegas (led by Wes Edens) failing to reached an agreement.

San Diego's $500 million expansion fee is an MLS record, significantly higher than the $325 million that David Tepper paid to bring an expansion team to Charlotte in 2019. In 2007, Toronto FC paid $10 million in to join the league.

A press conference has been called for 1:45 p.m. ET at Snapdragon Stadium, which is home to San Diego Aztecs college football team and the San Diego Wave of the National Women’s Soccer League.
MLS commissioner Don Garber, Mansour, chairman of Man Capital and Right to Dream, Sycuan Tribe chairman Cody Martinez and San Diego mayor Todd Gloria are expected to attend the press conference.
San Diego will play at the recently built 35,000 capacity Snapdragon Stadium.

Manny Machado will also be part of the ownership group. Watched the press conference everyone said all of the right things about being stewards rather than owners but we'll see. Was happy to hear that Monsour went to college in the US, which answers some of my questions about why he is interested in an MLS club.

"FCSD" rolls off the tongue better, IMHO, maybe because it's similar to "UCSD". But that may be a reason it's not the one chosen.

They do this to allows the fans to pick an unofficial nickname, as an example Minnesota United put the Minnesota state bird the Loon on their crest, so now the fans refer to them as the "Loons". Perhaps, San Diego FC could put lightning bolts on their crest to honor a past "San Diego sport team" and be called the "Bolts" by the fans. They also do this to avoid future trademark infringements and law suits. As you can see they do this for various, it's not that they are uncreative or want to sound like a European club. We live in a World that if you offend someone you are either: boycotted, sued or protested against. An example of this is when the original San Jose Earthquakes relocated to Houston and were to be called "Houston 1836 FC". Which was to honor Texas' independence, not any different than the "New England Revolution" brand to honor America's Independence. But their was such a backlash that they rebranded before their official launch as "Houston Dynamo".

Thats not what happens, Minnesota UNited put Loon on their crest and they called themselves the Loons since day 1. They gave themselves that nickname. Fans didn't give them their nickname. They should have been named Minnesota Loons.

Its horrible. We take all the terrible practice of English football and nothing good. Where's promotion and relegation? Right, its America so we don't get the excitement of pro rel. But we have to accept this bullshit practice because its tradition?

This is hot garbage rational. Its not hard choosing a name no one is using especially in an era of Google.

No, they want to take the most pretentious practice of Europe without any fun.

    ******** MLS. I am done.

You are so full of it. You have no clue what really happened with the Minnesota nickname. They were not going to be called the Minnesota Loons. If they weren't able to keep the Minnesota United name which they brought over from the NASL, along with the crest they were going to be named Minnesota FC. They didn't call themselves the Loons. It started with the local press, then the fans started using the loons name. I am orginially from Minnesota, so I experienced it. As to being done with MLS. Nobody cares.

Of course they weren't. They wanted to be pretentious pricks, and force nickname on the fans. Albeit this happened in USL like you said and not MLS. I am not in any favor of changing USL history of a team so I never complained about Minnesota or Nashville or Cincinnati.

Look at Columbus, thank god they did not change their name to Columbus SC. But this is clearly the direction Don Garber and MLS wants. Pretentious naming culture of England without the benefit of pro rel.

I am not saying pro rel would work here, I have my doubts about it. How about letting America be America? Hate this pretentious naming garbage. How many ********ing UNiteds, City SC, or City FC or SC/FC do we need? Its insanity.

    Good article here: https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-stars-pro-soccer-team-is-now-minnesota-united-fc/195326921/

I hate this argument as both sides have valid arguments. You can claim that MLS is over-using the SC, FC, etc, and I agree. However, the argument that this is the "Pretentious naming culture of England " is straight out wrong.

SC's and FC's have been part of the American soccer culture for more than a century.
St. Louis had Stix, Bear, & Fuller, FC, and later, St. Louis Central Breweries F.C. There was also Wellston FC, and Tabler FC. Starting in the 70's there were many youth organizations named "Soccer Club" - Busch Soccer Club, St. Louis Soccer Club, etc.
It wasn't just St. Louis. It was many cities: Fall River F.C., Elizabeth S.C., Greek-American A.C., Paterson F.C., San Francisco Italian Athletic Club, and so on.

We only see it as "European" because we had so many colleges and professional football teams using Lions, Tigers, and Bears (Oh,my).

Unfortunately, social media is destroying the possibility of naturally occurring nicknames. In St. Louis, there is a group actively pushing St. Louis CITY SC to be referred to as the Dawgs without any explanation or connection to the team. Too many agendas these days for naturally occurring.

No matter what you call it people are going to complain and any name is going to sound fake and made up because guess what, they are made up because it was just literally created. It's up to us as supporters to make this thing legit, but even then there will be people happy to say we are just copying things from Europe.

Honestly my current complaint are the terrible billboards around town. Absolutely nothing original about them. It's hard to tell they are even talking about soccer looks more like a golf add than anything.

My problem is them copying everything bad about European soccer and none of the good. Where is pro rel? Why not copy that? Oh right. If you are gonna have American system then be American all the way including name culture. We have worst of the both worlds.

…the problem isn’t having FC or Stanley Cup suffix. The problem is having just the suffix and nothing else. Or being United. We aren’t Europe. Stop acting like it.

None of those teams had anything else. It’s not European. It’s been part of the soccer in this country for 100 years. Quit thinking that your experience is everyone’s experience

Sad that we're going to have another generic "Place FC" name in MLS. The fix is in, they're giving fans the choice of TWO equally generic names "FC Place" and "Place FC" but it's obvious the latter has already been selected and the fans will be manipulated into supporting it over the former. First the website is already San Diego FC. Second Tom Penn their president (who gave us LAFC, a good name but still place FC) said "it's up to the fans, do they want to put San Diego first or football first" which is obviously spinning it in a way to get a reaction for San Diego FC.

Names they should have considered before these generic options:
    - Atletico San Diego
    - Deportivo San Diego
    - Mission San Diego
