Rather unlikely. The only possible chance if he re establishes himself in the PL (No chance if he re establishes himself abroad )and then after a few years and Southgate’s departure. But even it would be very controversial and I hope it doesn’t happen because would utterly polarise the entire team.
I agree, Fireburn. Even if Greenwood gets back playing for United and proves to be the World Class talent everyone thought he would be, there's a huge question mark over his character and whether he would fracture the special team spirit Gareth has forged. Let's either hope Kane keeps doing what he's doing for another 4/5 years or that a new (and more acceptable) successor soon appears.
And also not just the team spirit but the image of the team- sponsors would be very concerned and before the World cup the entire team met Prince William. I doubt the royal family would be keen to have meet a such a controversial player.
And, more importantly, how it will be perceived by female supporters and women at large. No wonder United are thinking long and hard about keeping him.
The last thing Man United will want is to bring him back and then Katie Zelem and the rest of their women team openly refuse to back it and/or publicly protest.
Although it was a bit of a long shot I was kind of hoping United would mould Rashford into a CF as his attributes to play that role have improved this season along with his goal tally. Given that it is the position that’s top of their transfer wish list though it seems unlikely now.
Very true. It hasn't stopped Juventus and several Turkish clubs putting in a bid for him by all accounts. It would be such bitter irony if England actually had a natural heir to Lineker/Shearer/Rooney/Kane but couldn't play him because he was seen to be a wrong un.
Well those countries probably won’t see the same backlash. Still who knows what will happen post Southgate.
Of course but never rule out a lot of the press deciding to support his recall and that creating a major shadow that defines the team anyway. Particularly post Kane and if England are struggling for goals.
That just will not happen. The press just aren’t going to change their stance on this issue. Any journalist that did would get ripped to shreds.
Some of the more controversial pundits in the press might well privately support his return to the League at least. And in the pretty unlikely event he is playing well for a PL team they would certainly be some voices who would try and pull the rehabilitated card - they won’t succeed but it will be a shadow - always there in the background particularly after poor performances,
There has been pretty much total silence other than factual news stories - no comment articles advocating getting rid of him from Man United either which is weird as that is what is most likely going to happen this summer (Through Ten Hag clearly seems to want him back.)
whilst the general public is starting to reject cancel culture sponsors still haven't found the balls to ignore a vocal minority but eventually they will catch up, so whilst I'm sure any decision on Greenwood would be spun as a sporting one it will be the FA's call based on money
With Greenwood i feel the majority of people do not want him back even for Man United let alone for England.
that's a different thing, someone will give him a chance at some level and he will eventually be back playing at prem level his ability is too much and once he's back in football he's back and the next teams will find it far easier to sign him. At the end of the day he hasn't been convicted of a crime so someone will take the first step, talent always wins out in the end
It will still be massively controversial for any PL team do so. Say he plays well in Italy or Turkey. Whoever brings him back would have to deal with all the controversy as if he has never played since he was arrested. Would either be a brave or a desperate team. Many Man United fans naturally have more loyalty to him which means if they brought him back they might have more supporters than if another PL club brought him back.
once he's back playing he's back playing they will ignore it, especially if he's been doing intense counselling, you may not be comfortable with the idea but its the reality. I would suggest people don't look too deep at their heros of yesteryear, you'd probably be surprised how many were total shitbags in their private lives
‘Cancel culture’ from seeing gruesome evidence of beating and raping a woman. Your argument is in the vocal minority.
Rashford is playing CF in the cup final let’s see how he goes. Will be interesting to see if Man City bring Foden on.
It would be the most toxic environment ever to place upon a team. I asked this last time this debate came up but got no reply. Name another sports person who has had evidence like that placed into the public domain and been able to return to high level sport? I can only think of issues were people might have been convicted of things but denied them, or diminished themselves in some way and there is no recorded evidence available. Having the recorded evidence played back over and over if he does return will have a significant effect.
He'll end up like ravel Morrison playing for Jamaica. Desperate nations with no scruples will take him
Mike Tyson was convicted of Rape and then returned. Maybe for team sport rugby player Paddy Jackson after he was acquitted of rape but loads of toxic messages came out during the trial so he was sacked by Ulster and went to Perpignan and then London Irish.
