This 7v7 tournament looks kind of fun — you can watch it on Peacock and whatever’s not on Peacock is on Youtube — i think… With 32 teams, there are so many games going on, it’s hard to tell what’s going on at any particular moment. TST website = https://thetournament.com/ YouTube = https://www.youtube.com/@thesoccertournament7v7 Instagram = https://instagram.com/tst7v7 The tournament format is interesting - 2x20 min halves followed by a timeless target score period. In target score time, the team that is ahead can score 1 more goal to win, or the other team can try to catch up and win by 1. It’s a petty fast game… Tournament rules = https://thetournament.com/tst/tournament-rules/
I saw Wondo take a shot. Quincy got a yellow card for pushing someone into a trash can. Actually Quincy scored a goal.
Ol’ pillow feet still doing his thing! Not to mention, Jimmy Conrad! ! I still think we should have signed Jahn for depth at the 9 a few years ago. Who else did we have besides Wondo in say 2021, and Wondo’s not really a 9 anyway? Who else do we have now behind Jebo as a 9? Nice goal from one former Quake to another in the 7v7 tournament. #Quakes74 https://t.co/4oPLVU7Db3— JMoore Quakes (@JmooreQuakes) June 2, 2023
Looks like Wondo's team is already out The matchups and bracket are set for the TST Knockouts🔥⚽️Catch all of the games for THE REST OF TST on @peacock! pic.twitter.com/0z1Be7ffZE— TST (@TST7v7) June 2, 2023
That’s too bad — Wondo was a last minute add on Clint Dempsey’s team. But they lost their GK when Luis Robles got a golf ball sized knot on his head. That’s why Wondo went into goal. On the upside, Jimmy Conrad has gotten his dream matchup vs Wrexham! He was gunning for that. JC has DeRo, Adam Jahn, Nick Besler, DaMarcu, and Zach Loyd with SKC super fan Kevin Smith-Lopez. Bracket and results are at https://thetournament.com/tst/bracket/
Haha, i just saw how Conrad & Beasley beat the Nati team (former USL Cincinnati players) in OT (i think it’s called Target Time? Can’t remember…) Anyhow, the Nati GK came up to the halfway line to start an attack, and when his teammate lost the ball near the C&B penalty area, a C&B player chipped it over the Nati GK. It was a beautiful little shot. I like the way the OT is designed to end the game on a goal. I would love to see this format played at the youth or rec level.
Watching Raleigh Rebels vs ZALA FFF (AJ De la Garza’s team with Lee Nguyen on the roster). They are into OT (Target Score Time). ZALA was down 3-1going into OT and tied it up 3-3 after the OT went down to 4v4. Then, teams were reduced to 3v3 and Next Goal Wins. And fk but the ZALA GK scores the winning goal to advance. Very cute! Too bad only the champion gets the $1M, cuz the other teams ought to get something for advancing. This tournament looks like a lot of work!
AJ De la Garza’s team ZALA FFF was down 2 goals going into OT but beat the Raleigh Rebels on a GK strike after the teams were reduced to 3v3. Such an entertaining concept… It’s gonna take tremendous willpower to go all the way in this TST 7v7.
Conrad-Beasley vs Sneaky Fox (Mike Magee’s team including Lenny, Quincy and Jay DeMerit) in the quarters. They are in OT. Sneaky Fox needs 2 goals to win, Jimmy Conrad only needs 1 goal. OT is now down to 6v6.
Wow, that TST 7v7 was over so fast. Newtown won over a Canadian team. Too bad all the “celebrity” teams got eliminated. Apparently it helps to have indoor soccer pros on your team! Does anyone know how similar this format is to that 7v7 league that Gerard Pique is running in Spain? The NYTimes had a story awhile ago about how Pique’s league is trying to provide a faster game for young people, whose attention span isn’t long enough to withstand a 90 min game. In the TST format, most games are over in an hour or less. The TST 7v7 was like pickup on steroids. Also, i wonder if the Quakes had some of the most MLS representation…
When i first heard about Pique’s league, i thought it sounded terribly stupid. But if it’s like this TST 7v7, i could see the small-size outdoor format drawing a lot of eyeballs on streaming, and maybe leading to a national league. They claimed they sold out all their stadium tickets, and the stands were definitely full.
Haha on his In Soccer We Trust podcast, jimmy Conrad revealed some lessons learned AJ de la Garza’s team was the best at 3v3. They came back twice in knockout rounds to win in OT when the sides were reduced to 3v3 While older experienced guys were good to keep the team calm and focused, the field size required more younger players Quincy was the dirtiest player, and Lenny was also tough to handle. Jimmy was glad Gordo wasn’t there The $1M champions Newtown FC were self-funded Wrexham had some huge guy who scored 6 on the USWNT team A lot of fun to play in, high level of soccer Bigger names are interested in playing next year
Probably my last post on the TST. The champions represent Newtown, site of Sandy Hook 1/10 We were invited to this exclusive event because of our on field success and efforts off the field locally here in Newtown.— Newtown Pride FC (@NewtownPrideFC) June 5, 2023
Listened to Pablo Maurer on the Cooligans podcast. Pablo covered the TST the whole weekend and thought it was great. His comments:\ On the first day, the team called Dallas United racially abused a West Ham player. West Ham was going to leave, and other teams volunteered to leave with them. But Pablo said the organizers handled it really well and quickly, and kept the media informed. They pretty quickly booted the Dallas team out of the tournament. The tournament organizers didn’t fully anticipate how the OT concept would work. At least one game got down to 2v2, but the tourney had no rule for how it would work if things got down to 1v1, e.g. how would you do a “throw-in”. Or what if a player got ejected at a low ratio? They might add a rule that if you got a red card in OT, the other team would add a player. At 85 degrees, it was brutally hot and there was little shade for players or fans. Most teams had ringers who were futsal or indoor pros At the end of the day, Maurer collected stuff that players left behind, such as Steven Lenhart left behind his home and away Sneaky Fox jerseys. Guess no one wanted to trade with him… The organizers gave away all the game balls (around 300 balls worth ~$130 each) to the fans/media.
