Ajax defeated Twente last week to move atop the league table with one match to go. Ajax travel to PEC Zwolle while Twente host Feynoord. The lead is only one point and all the games kick off at the same time so Ajax really need a win in this one.

Both are head and shoulder above the rest of the league.
Wonder how to make it more competitive without importing foreign players.

@feyenoordsoccerfan: How do you rate both Kalma and Leuchter as scoring forwards?
Who is the more talented of two? How do their styles different? Can either of them, in your opinion (or that of anyone who watches the Eredivisie Vrouwen regularly), become a legit striker for the national team? With Martens on the back end of her career, and Miedema hurt and playing more 10 than 9 for Arsenal, the Dutch NT needs a breakout young forward.

Or maybe it will Brugts, though she's now playing left back for Jonker on the NT, and apparently playing that position pretty well.

@L'orange - I've watched the few Ajax women's matches that have been televised. Leucter is a good finisher but she is not very quick. She is reliant on good service as he has difficulty creating her own shots. She does play in the middle for Ajax. The problem with the Dutch league is that other than Twente, the rest of the teams are average to poor. Dutch are 10th in UEFA coeffient standings and only will get two spots in the Champions League next year Bot teams will have to go through two playoff rounds.

  5. To be honest I would trust more on Orange14 judgement as I only occasionally watch the Feyenoord women and as such have a poor understanding of who's who. It's more the game I watch than keeping an eye on respective players.

Kalma is a big lumbering forward, to me her handling speed is not good enough for elite level. Is in the right spot for most of her goals, not going to create her own chances.
Leuchter is not a natural striker but has a good finish. Can see her play on the left wing cutting inside or as the support striker in a two forward system (or false nine even) . Can still improve physically (speed, explosiveness. Handling speed not good enough to play striker either at elite level)

PSV should be right up there with them given the squad they assembled this year. This coach should have been sacked a couple of years ago already...
In other retirement news: Mandy vd Berg (32, PSV) also hanging up her boots at the end of the season. Not mentioned yet what her future plans are...
The problem for most other teams is simply funding, Den Haag getting robbed blind of their talents every year and players moving to Ajax and Twente to sit on the bench (on the other hand facing more and better competition on a daily basis in training ofcourse)

  8. Yeah, I was wondering how much of Ajax and Twente towering over the rest was with some clubs to be accounted for as being sub par coaching.
I've no insight in that, so it's a question to be answered by those who have knowledge and insight in that matter.

    Congratulations to the Ajax women.
They took the "Schaal" in great fashion with a thumping 6-1 victory over Zwolle.

@L'orange - here are the highlights from the league clinching win. Leuchter has some very fine moments both shooting and passing.

I came across this nice interview with Katja Snoeijs and her transition from Bordeaux to
Everton in the WSL. Everton got beat 4-1 by Arsenal yesterday--but Snoeijs scored a goal and the team is currently 6th in the standings. I've always liked her; she is not big or physically imposing, but she knows how to score goals. I'd like to see her get some CF action with the Dutch NT's first team, but doubt it will happen. She doesn't have Beerensteyn's physical qualities, but she's more clinical, IMO. She got some quality minutes two/three years ago in qualifying matches for a WC, I think--Miedema might have been dinged up at the time--and while the opponents were not great, she scored a few goals. I'm glad she's at least been back in the squad, and we'll have to see if she makes the final roster for the WC.

  13. Fenna Kalma makes a top transfer from fc Twente to CL finalist Wolfsburg.
The Dutch topscorer will join fellow Dutchies Jill Roord, Lynn Wilms and Dominique Janssen.

  14. Egurrola and Van de Donk champions with Olympique Lyon
De title battle in Division 1 Féminine of France was concluded with a 1-0 win over PSG, the 16th title in 17 seasons:eek:
Lieke Martens and Jackie Groenen were part of the PSG team.PSG

A PSG team without Katoto for the whole season, Dudek for pretty much the whole season, and Diani for the critical final stretch of the season. Lyon did pretty well without Macario; Diani was the reason PSG did fairly well without Katoto, and she wasn't available due to injury/suspension.

I thought Groenen had a good/great first season with PSG. She was okay versus Paris FC, but I thought she was excellent in both Lyon matches. However, she was taken off before the 70th minute in each match; that was frustrating/confusing to me, but so be it.

Martens had a disappointing first season with PSG, and her performances vs Lyon summed up how things have gone for her. Hopefully, she will have more of an impact for the Dutch at the World Cup.

Groenen was good for PSG--she is just a good player, period--but was taken off for Albert, I believe, as the coach was hunting for a goal. Albert can score from distance--and nearly did so not long after coming in. Lyon's defensive intensity/pressing was effective in this and the previous win against PSG (cup final), and then they made the one play for the winning goal. Such is soccer. PSG definitely missed its two good forwards.

PSG had Martens playing centrally and high quite a lot against Lyon--and as the ATA analyst pointed out, that is not a her best position. She's always been at her best playing wide, and PSG should have played with more width. She hardly touched the ball in the first half. It may be that while she was a very good fit with Barca, she's not looking at good fit with PSG--at least so far.

Groenen was strong, one of PSG's best players in the match, and for Lyon, Van de Donk was lively---all over the field, and ran her tail off. Lyon, with its high press, really stifled PSG in the first half. It's a good defensive team.

Groenen, Van De Donk, Egurola, Netherland has a good midfield; and the 2 last one are used to play together :)
Only Martens has been a little bit a disappointment during the D1 season. That said, Precheur is a very special coach and when he has decided that a player, for one or another reason doesn't match whith his plan, he just let her struggling with her own doubts. He can be very "imbuvable" (i don't know how translate that) and can fire or just abandon a player instead of help to find confidence. Martens with her country can be stronger than that !

Could be reversed psychology where he’s trying to get her out of her comfort zone and believe she can overcome her doubts and abilities to be good or better.

I've liked Albert so far, and her introduction was completely justified. That long distance shot was a fantastic effort. I just don't see why any of Hamraoui (deeper/more defensive position than Groenen), Bachmann, or Baltimore couldn't have been brought off. I have a lot of sympathy for what Hamraoui has had to go through, but despite some very good long passing, I just don't think she added much most of the season in terms of good tempo control and defensive stability. Baltimore is great defensively and can switch the ball well, but in terms of more concrete offensive contributions, she did not have a good season in my opinion. Bachmann had a terrific period of form not too long ago, but in Diani's absence, she didn't do any better than Baltimore or Martens.

The problem is Martens has played out wide for PSG this season apart from this match vs Lyon and has not performed well as a whole. The ATA analyst was correct about her playing out of position, but the implication that she has played out of position a lot this season (at least that was my impression) was definitely wrong.
