For all the focus on direct emissions, it's only lately scope 2 (electricity consumption, data centers, looking at you) and scope 3 (supply chain) emissions are even being widely discussed. That's been a refreshing change over the past few years. 5 years ago that wasn't the case.
My cousin runs Fiat's electric division for large industrial vehicles. I don't think you'll see electric combine harvesters any time soon but it's good to know they're working on the technology.
People can eat meat as long as they pay the price for it... INCLUDING the damage it does to the planet.
100% agree (thought that creates an unfairness). Rationing via price is at least easy to do. Also though - we are using a lot of meat alternatives eg soy based 'mince' and in spag bol, i pretty much cannot tell the difference
Yeah, we do similar or, at least, we 'bulk up' the meat in that stuff as a way to save money and eat better. Personally I'd be quite happy to go veggie but tptb have deemed that not a goer atm
Yeah - flexitarian is a good solution. We eat meat 1-2 times per month. We have fish once per week on the market day. I don't really 'miss' anything at all because if i want to grill a steak or do slow cooked pig, then i just go do it.
Not sure if meat alternatives are getting better or meat is getting worse. Probably a bit of but its certainly getting easier to simply stay away from meat.
A couple of things that popped up on my youtube feed today in similar vein... As an aside, when she's doing the 'teachery' bit with the pointy stick I feel the need to tell teacher that I've been naughty and deserve the harshest of punishments? Is that wrong of me? My guess is... yes! This guy produces some interesting vids which go on FAR too long... But the information is worth hearing for those that missed any of it, (which include me for some of it), so they're worth catching for that.
The cooking also takes longer I find. One can season the meat, warm up the BBQ, grill a meat appetizer, clean the BBQ and grill the meat main course all in the same time as it takes to make a salad.
He did an excellent show on Jordan Peterson a few months ago that came in at a short, snappy 2 hours 55 minutes. I'm sure you'll be jumping right on that.
Er... I'm embarrassed to say I think I've already seen it Well, if it's the one I'm thinking of. I think I watched one of them over a few 'sittings' and maybe that was one of them. They are interesting and his arguments are well made but, at some point you start to think... 'Yeah, I GET it. You don't need to keep labouring the point.' Actually, this is the one I assume and it's about climate at the beginning so it seems relevant... It sums up Peterson quite well in that, if you're not really listening, (and are either very stupid or very drunk), he might seem to be making sense and even be quite clever. Unfortunately, most people aren't... and he's not. He's not a smart guy but maybe he just plays one on the telly?
So apparently Canada is on fire, but you have to do some digging to know about it if you live in the US. Zero news coverage of this, even as the smoke drifts over large populated regions of the US. Reminds me of the "don't look up" film. A sampling of some of the just need-to-know stuff that's on the news instead: Wife of ex-POTUS diagnosed with dementia. DeSantis' thoughts on some poem being pulled from a school's library Chinese jet passes near an American jet Ukraine strike in Russia kills 1. Build up of Iowa primary that"s over 7 months away. And of course, shark sightings near beaches.
The word "haze" inexplicably appears in our weather forecadt here.mwhich is odd, because haze dowsn't usually appear when the dewpoints are around 30 and the overnight lows are in the low to mid forties. Thanks for clearing up tjis mystery.
Basically we’re fvcked: A new study says Earth has pushed past seven out of eight scientifically established safety limits and into "the danger zone," not just for an overheating planet that's losing its natural areas, but for well-being of people living on it. https://t.co/ZNGuTZsnxU— The Associated Press (@AP) June 1, 2023
My main question now is when, not if, agriculture begins to fail en masse (you can't really do agriculture if you can't reasonably predict the how the weather will behave). I have a feeling it will be sooner rather than later. When it happens, civilization collapses.
Don't worry - I've reserved you a tent at starvation cove! We'll live high on the hog until the man flesh runs out
The smoke hovering over a large part of the US only just made the mainstream news yesterday. But not really even. It was just discussed while talking about the weather next to a story on the rain event off the Gulf Coast. And don't worry, the smoke will dissipate by the weekend because of a change in wind direction. Zero mention that the amount of acreage burning is 13 times above normal and nearing a thousand foreign firefighters have been/are being flown in, including 200 all the way from South Africa. But nothing to see here.... so let's get back to Orangutan Don and Meatball Ron's name calling exchange. (yellow, brown, red = high, very high, extreme danger levels, respectively).
